D Edwards vs M Peterson (1 Viewer)

Last year D Edwards beat M Peterson by a reasonable margin (LB3 10.06 ppg vs LB8 8.84 ppg). That happened despite Peterson scoring a TD. When I project stats for 2006, I usually discard TDs, especially that I think Edwards is probably even more likely than Peterson to score a TD in 2006. Edwards also beat Peterson in previous years, not just 2005.

When I project stats for 2006, I don't see how I can come up with D Edwards declining below Peterson, or Peterson going up over Edwards. The offseason changes on both teams are not significant enough to make me do that. In fact, Brees leaving SD is actually a good thing for Edwards because the defense might be on the field more often.

The FBG consensus this year is Peterson LB3 and Edwards LB5. Four FBGs have Peterson ahead of Edwards, and three FBGs have Edwards ahead of Peterson.

I am curious to hear the arguments for Peterson > Edwards in 2006 because I have to save one of them. I am leaning towards Edwards but would like to hear the reasoning of the other side of the coin before I pull the trigger. When I go against the consensus, I want to make sure it makes sense, whereas when I go with the consensus, it's more or less a no brainer.

Edwards is nearing the point in his career when his production could fall at any time (33). I'm not saying it will, actually I think he will have a nice season. But never-the-less the risk is there. You have less risk with Peterson in that respect. He's in his prime. For this reason I'd go with Peterson over Edwards.

Chargers | Team getting no bites for D. Edwards

Fri, 16 Jun 2006 20:03:23 -0700

Kevin Acee, writing for the Sporting News, reports the San Diego Chargers have received almost no legitimate interest in LB Donnie Edwards, who the team has been trying to trade. His 2006 salary is too big for most teams to justify for a 33-year-old linebacker who lacks the size to be a force at the line of scrimmage.

I have Edwards ranked higher for the upcoming season.

I wouldn't put too much stock into the lack of trade interest around the league. He's an older guy with a large salary. His contract expires after the 2007 season and he'll be 36 then, so his days in the league are obviously numbered, but he's shown no signs of slowing down fantasy wise over the last few years. There is definite risk involved, trying to decide just when his skills start to decline, but you also don't want to jump the gun and cast him aside while he's still performing at a top 3 clip. Edwards, Michael Strahan and Brian Dawkins...like fine wine.

Keep in mind that this owner can only keep one of these two. Am I correct to assume you would drop Peterson before Edwards in a keeper league??

Nope. Peterson ranks higher than Edwards in my dynasty rankings.

It's a keeper league but the setup is such that I cannot keep Edwards/Peterson after 2006. So I am just concerned about their 2006 value from a redraft perspective.Of course for dynasty there is no doubt Peterson > Edwards.

I am not so sure about 2006 redraft however.

Sounds like there are much more in favor of Peterson than Edwards.

Could you keep Peterson and then trade his "keeper" rights prior to year-end?? Peterson's trade value in keeper FF leagues is obviously higher than Edwards'.

I plan on trading Peterson or Edwards before the season starts. But the team acquiring one of them will still view the LB from a redraft perspective, just like me because they won't be able to keep him in 2007. But before trading one of them, I was trying to evaluate who I would prefer to keep for 2006 if I had the choice (or if I cannot agree on a trade). Looks like the general consensus is that Peterson > Edwards for redraft, so I might get a better offer for him. I am still not convinced that Peterson is the better choice for 2006 though. The only argument is that Edwards is older and has a greater risk of falling off this year. We have been saying that with Zach Thomas for a while as well...
