Back story - Work in a hospital that is for profit the company hasn't given out a cost of living raise in 3 years. The reason everyone still works here is the Monday-Friday hours 4 days or 3 day work weeks. The company has hired a new CEO who came up with a brilliant plan in his mind to change all workers to 8 hour shifts. Most of our department worked ten hour shifts or 12 hour shifts. The company gave 1 week notice that we would go live with the new work schedule 8 hour shifts June 1. But, the 8 hour shifts are not static. They change daily and weekly...for example you may work 7-3 Monday, 8-4 Tuesday, 10-6 Wednesday, 9-5 Thursday, and 8:30 to 4:30 Friday. The numerous problems it has caused are a PITA! First, we have several single mother's who now have to find day care for the 2 extra days a week they are required to work for the same amount of money. Second, many of our workers had part-time jobs working on their days off before which paid really well, which they quit. Third, the schedule is ####ed up that everyday the late workers are asked to come in and cover because we don't have enough people to open the department and take of the patient load, and the people who are supposed to get off early are asked daily to stay late to help with later case loads that we now don't have covered. We have spoken with administration and told them our frustrations with the new schedule and have not received any feedback. IN the past we have never had overtime. Since this new plan started people have a lot of overtime.

So anyway...today is my day to work from 6-1. So for the past few weeks everyone has been asked to come in even earlier to help with patient load, or stay late. Like every ####### day! So today was my day to work from 6am to 1pm. My boss asks if I can stay over past 1pm to help out. I told him absolutely not. I cannot stay past my time today I have plans sorry. Boss goes on and on about team work and that I am not being a team player, and that if I feel this way about it I should go ahead and leave for the day. It was 1255 at the time. I said ok and left for the weekend.

Yes, but they shouldn't be surprised. Sounds like a complete cluster of their own making.
The problem is that I feel guilty for not staying, but I have come in early and stayed late so many times already. I am mad at myself for even feeling bad about it. Time to start looking for a new job I guess.

Considering you may not have a job when you come back in on Monday... yeah may be a good plan.

Well, they've put you in a tough spot. If you've been there for a while and you care about the place, you're motivated to go the extra mile when needed. But it sounds like they've made the place a living hell with the nutty schedule. I can't imagine working different hours every day. You could argue that it's actually unhealthy, since your body gets used to going to bed and waking up at the same time every day. Which is pretty ironic given that it's a hospital.

Maybe if everyone takes the same attitude you did, they will come to their senses. Or, maybe you'll get fired.

If you're the first person to turn down the request since June 1, then you work with a bunch of pansies.

How can they create a specific schedule and expect everyone to accommodate their needs on such short notice?

Well they have that right I guess. It has been a very turbulent time these past few weeks.

The problem is that no one wants to say no because they feel like they are letting down their co workers. I see the problem being that if no one says NO management will keep asking people to come in early and stay late without fixing the problem.

"Homer, Mr. Burns says if you don't work today, don't bother showing up on Monday."

"Whoo-hoo! Four day weekend!"

:homer:

Time to find a new job. When working in the medical field, one should not feel like you have the same schedule as a bag boy at a supermarket.

Not a richard move at all. Tell your boss that on some days you can and are willing to do this on short notice and other days like today you can't. Tell him that's how it goes when you're given the schedule in advance, that outside commitments are scheduled around it and last-second changes are tough to accommodate.

Isn't 6-1 only 7 hours? Do you have paid breaks during that time?
Yeah that is another thing...the schedule is so ####ed that when it was put out for this month no one said anything about the obvious mistakes. It was a 7 hour shift and several other people have had days off in the middle of the week they didn't ask for, but didn't say anything. Ugh it is frustrating.

Well I think most if not all of the employees are looking for new jobs, but in the meantime they are waiting it out.

Good advice.

Yes

  • 1 week notice
  • incompetent management
  • expecting people to work extra because of poor leadership
  • treating people like they're the problem when it's a leadership issue
are all D!!K moves.

And I don't think you did anything wrong at all by not wanting to work later at all. They can't expect/require you to do that all the time at their whim and you need to stick up for your personal life. The leaving 5 minutes early part is what could open you up to some issues if they are trying to make an example. I get why you did it, and I probably would have wanted to also, but it was kinda a smart ### response. A snarky, "Oh, no need I'm good until 1:00" may have gotten your point across, but left you a little less open if boss decides to push anything. Likely he won't, but who knows.

Are you paid hourly? Do you get 40 hours a week?

Yeah we are all paid hourly. We usually get 40 hours a week. With this new schedule people are getting a lot of overtime.

You should have agreed to work over, left at 1:00 anyway, and had somebody punch you out at 3:00. With a schedule that screwed up I don't see how management can keep track of everybody.

That sounds like horible mismanagement right there. Theyre wasting peoples time with an inefficient schedule and then wasting payroll dollars on paying people overtime to make up for it.

Id start looking for a new job just because if this is how they act when they first get there, they are going to run the place into the ground and make everyone miserable while they do it.

That schedule is 8 different kinds of stupid, and the way they implemented it is another 3. I'd request to be put on a specific shift time, and if they refuse, start lookong for another job.

Finally had enough today and quit. Start new job on Monday. I have never left a job before on bad terms, but this I believe was worth it. Was meeting with upper administration today going over different scenarios on the schedule. After about 10 minutes I could see that I was talking to the wall. At one point the COO was yawning. I had enough and told them they are ####ed in the head if they think anyone will work this dumb ### schedule and to kiss my ###. I quit, walked out found a new job same day. #### them and their silly schedules.

Man that felt good.

I know hingsight is 20/20, but you shoulda #### on the desk.

I have been in the medical field long enough to find another job very easily. I called some people I know on the cell phone as I was leaving the parking lot, and was hired basically over the phone. I wish I would have done a Lebron James and said, "#### you guys, I am taking my talents across to "X" hospital."

Yep, one day I will work a 9 hour shift during my 2 week pay period to make it up. GENIUS!

Congrats man. I'm going through a similar regime change. My last boss was cool as a cucumber.

My new boss is like a verbally abusive inflatables you see outside muffler shops.

Good luck on your new gig.
