PERRY HALL, Md. - The father of a Perry Hill, Md., student struck a teacher with a baseball bat after police were made aware of a series of texts between the teacher, a 42-year-old man, and a 15-year-old student, Baltimore County police said.

Police said an officer of the White Marsh Precinct read over dozens of texts that described an emotional relationship that seemed inappropriate for a teacher and student, according to a release from the Baltimore County Police Department. The girl's mother alerted police to the texts at about 3 a.m. at the precinct.

Police determined however that no crime had been committed. The case was referred to the Crimes Against Children Unit for further investigation, police said.

"There's nothing we've seen in the contents that's criminal," Baltimore County police spokeswoman Elise Armacost said of the text messages.

Thursday morning, the teacher went to the girls home in the 4600 block of Vicky Road to speak with the girls father. The teacher did so without permission, police said.

"The girl's father told the teacher to leave, but the teacher refused, according to a police news release. The girl's father then struck the teacher with a baseball bat.

The officer found that the teacher sustained minor injuries and advised him of the process for swearing out a complaint of second-degree assault (a misdemeanor), the release continued. The teacher said he did not wish to pursue charges.

So far, no charges have been filed. Police are not releasing the names of the girl, her parents or the teacher.

The father could file trespassing charges against the teacher, who has been barred from returning to the home. The teacher could file assault charges against the father, police said.

Seriously, why is this thread worthy? The teacher should get beat hard. And if he shows up again he should get beat twice as hard.

The teacher either has some cajones, or is really dumb to show up to talk to the dad...then didn't leave when asked to.

Yup, dumb teacher. That's the result you're gonna get!

Stupid teacher, why would you go to their house? No matter what the texts or relationship was, it's just dumb.

That's sort of what I was thinking. He was either invited and surprised the father, or was wildly inappropriate. I guess if we're charitable, we can chalk it up to concern, but that would seem dubious at best.

No matter how concerned I was about a student, I wouldn't go to their house, especially not alone.

Yeah, I'm just trying to see his end of it. Bad, bad move.

What can you say without seeing the texts? The father might be a lunatic.
Dozens of texts between a middle-aged teacher and a 15 year old girl. The texts weren't about homework. Police said the texts indicate an emotional relationship. You need to know more?

The content of the texts is important, but the fact he showed up at the girl's hpuse tells me that something inappropriate was going on here. The dad was right to start batting practice, IMO.

Teachers should not text with students, period. A 42 year old male teacher that does so with a 15 year old girl and the texts have nothing to do with school work deserves to be suspended at the least but a baseball bat beat down probably is even better.

Did the texts say something bad about Dad?
This is the only way I could possibly imagine siding with the teacher... If the texts somehow related to abuse by the father and the teacher was the confidant. Even then though, he should have escalated things and not gone on his own.

Bad decisions.

What if that "emotional relationship" was that of a surrogate father because the girl confessed to her teacher that her dad was a psychotic ##### who sometimes hit her. What if the teacher showed up to the house because he honestly wanted to try to talk to the dad to calm him down before he hit the girl again. What if the teacher didn't go to the police because the girl begged him not to, so he thought he'd try reasoning with the father first?

There's lot of things not said in this story. Let's not allow the numerous sensationalized stories of pedophile teachers to twist this ugly before we know what really happened. 95% of teachers are good people. They just don't make the news.

There's a lot of people in this thread jumping to conclusions without knowing one thing about this relationship.

Could it have been sexual or flirty? Yes.

It could have been something else too.

You just don't know.

Still not appropriate

Are teachers mandated reporters in Maryland? They are in NY.

99% likelihood they are. And regardless, common sense says a teacher goes immediately to the authorities in such cases. If that isn't drilled into their heads from day one, then shame on the school board. Carrying on a clandestine texting relationship with the kid defies any kind of logic. As does the mom calling the cops if that was really what these texts were about.

I have no idea. You're right about NY though. Ms. Vader is a HS teacher and she would have had to report the father immediately.

In my scenario (which is no more true than the pedophile nonsense people are saying above), I bet the guy became emotionally attached to the girl and that clouded his judgement - made him become more personally involved and hopeful he could do something about the situation himself. Maybe the girl doesn't have a mother (none is mentioned). Maybe he was afraid reporting the father would send this girl into the foster care system. Lots of possibilities there.

Even so, the teacher made a poor call. No doubt about that. My point is maybe he did it for compassionate reasons. You just don't know.

This is still a bad idea, no matter the intention. If the father is a jerkwad who abused the daughter, then he should go to jail. The teacher, if he suspected abuse, should have gone to the cops with his suspicions, and in no way should have started a texting relationship with the girl.

Right. That's the weirdest fact of all of this to me.* Even if the teacher wanted to clear things up.

*The second being the student having the teacher's cell phone. I teach a college class and learned my listen quickly how dumb of an idea that was even at that level.

I'm starting a math teacher job at the high school level, and I'm not giving out my number to any students. Same with Facebook requests.

Well, yeah.

This reminds me of an old Naomi Watts movie...

Gross Misconduct ( I think that's what it was called)

Would be interested to see what was involved in the texts

how can the teacher file for assault when he refused to leave the guys house, at that point it could be considered self defense
