Numbers are assigned based on the order in the lineup thus Earle Combs wore #1, Mark Koenig #2, Babe Ruth #3, Lou Gehrig #4, Bob Meusel #5, Tony Lazzeri #6, Leo Durocher #7, Johnny Grabowski #8, Benny Bengough #9, and Bill Dickey #10 (#’s 8-10 are all catchers ) rounding out the starting line-up.

Why did the Yankees retire #8 in honor of Bill Dickey and Yogi in 1972? Not a question, just asking out of curiosity if Dickey was assigned #10.

What number did Kaline wear before he settled on 6?Well duh, JD, you should know that sometimes players change numbers during their careers. Mr. Dickey did not wear #8 when he came up but was assigned that number later. He kept that number until the end of his playing days. Just like Al Kaline did not always wear #6.
