Just interested in how high you guys see Clark in the TE rankings next year. In the playoffs he, almost exclusively, played as a slot reciever with Utecht and Fletcher filling the traditional TE role. Peyton looks like playing more short passes to his RB's and TE's rather than the deep threat to Wayne and Harrsion.

Obviously the absense of Stokely may have forced this decision but I don't see Stokely re-signing, Wilkins remaining as a returner and Moorehead is clearly not a starter.

Aside from Gates, who represents more value?

I think the Colts are going to look for a 3rd receiver somewhere which would put Clark back into the role he played for the majority of the last two years. I would expect another 50-catch, 5 TD season. Solid TE...nothing spectacular. If the Colts do not go get another pass catcher to fill that possession role, then maybe bump him up a little and put him in the top 5. Still below Gates and just a notch below the Shockey's and Heap's of the world.

Anthony Gonzalez would make a great slot WR for the Colts. The Colts will continue to use their TEs the same in 2007.

Would you rather draft him in round 1 than, say, a LB like Jon Beason (who sounds the front 7 player that might be there at #32 that I think would best fit the Colts D)?

In 4 years, Clark has yet to rank in the Top 10 fantasy TEs. Sure, he had two nice games in the playoffs, but I'm not really sure he's going to vault up the rankings. He may be a decent mid to late round pick that might exceed his draft position, but I doubt he'll turn into an impact TE next year.

Gonzalez won't be a 1st round pick but he won't last until the end of the 3rd (Colts don't get a 2nd round pick but may get two 3rds from compensations)

But I'd agree that he'd suit the role very well.

I 100% agree with this assessment - he has some value but his production is due more to injuries to other players rather than his ability.

"Another"? The most catches Clark has ever had is 37. No TE has ever had 50 receptions with Manning at QB. Clark will again be overrated in drafts.
Good point. I think injuries have prevented him from reaching 50 a couple times. He was pretty limited in a number of games he kind of 'played' in...and missed games every year. I'm assuming a 16-game, healthy season. If he plays 16 games, I'd expect 50 catches, 5 TDs. That'd put him in the 8-12 range for TEs. Seems reasonable. You are right that his playoff run will give him more of a perceived value. I'm very confident that he'll be drafted before I'll be comfortable taking him.

Of course not, but if he falls to rd 2 and the Colts can move up, you never know. One can dream can't he?

To get to 50 receptions in a year, a player needs to average 3.125 receptions per game.

Clark's résumé to date:

03 2.90 rec/gm

04 1.67 rec/gm

05 2.47 rec/gm

06 2.50 rec/gm

If the Colts don't sign a new 3rd receiver...I'll take that bet. He'll average more than 3 receptions per game next year. If a McCardell or an Engram or a high draft pick (top 3 rounds) comes in...he'll pull a 35-catch, 4 TD year again.
