Damon Huard (1 Viewer)

Granted, I have not had the chance to see Huard play. However, the guy posted a 11-1 TD/INT ratio and QB rating (98.0) only topped by Manning last year. The Chiefs were also a respectable 5-4 in his nine starts.

Why is Croyle being given the early nod??

Because Huard is mediocre and he's old
Old I'll give you, but so was Steve Beuerlein and Rich Gannon before they hit paydirt. I'm not so sure he's just mediocre. He really only had last season as a chance to prove himself and he displayed quite an effort in doing so. On a side note, Trent Green has accidentally opened the NFL doors for Kurt Warner and Damon Huard. Is Huard Warner-esque? Well - no, but you get my point. Perhaps Cleo Lemon is next??

I think Huard played well enough in his 9 starts last season that he should have to be beaten out for the job, instead of giving an unproven player like Croyle the inside track. Of course, the Chiefs don't agree. And I don't know why because Croyle didn't show much in preseason last year.

Croyle hasn't shown much anywhere other than (apparently) the practice field. Agree, it should be Huard's to lose.

I don't really know why they don't try to make a final run at the playoffs with Huard. The offensive parts aren't getting any younger either. Herm just being Herm.

Good point. They're essentially losing an OL per year to retirement, and both Kennison and LJ could be gone at year's end. IMO, the Chiefs are merely hoping their "youth movement" on D (D Johnson, Allen, Hali, Pollard, Page, etc) carries over to the offense......unfortunately, the offense only has Bowe (...and maybe Croyle) to hang their hat upon.

He wasn't last year. He played extremely well. Wake up and watch NFL Networks replay of his games. He showed poise, greatr touch and accuracy. If you didn't know who he was you would never guess it was him.Croyle will start eventually but if they want to win should start Huard week 1.

Very good question given how well he played last year. I still don't even know why Croyle was a second round pick. I saw a lot of his games at Alabama and was not at all impressed. I think the Chiefs should at least gie Huard a shot before they turn to Croyle.

Croyle was actuallly a 3rd RD pick

You're right. Don't know why I thought he was a 2. Anyway I thought he was a career backup in the NFL.

I read in the Sporting News yesterday that the Chiefs wants to keep pace with the other 3 teams in the division by having a young QB start this year (Cutler, Russell, Phillips). Take it with a grain of salt, but that's an interesting theory.

Ouch. Bad plan. I would think Croyle would have a tough time hanging with the before-mentioned pedigree of young QB's in the West.

remember freakin jay fiedler beat huard out even after missing most of training camp because of hip surgery. that was jay's first year with the dolphins too. it was also the year after huard won like 6 or 7 games when marino was hurt. the coaches must know something we don't. maybe huard just is not as good as he appears to be to the fans?

so what's your point?!Rich Gannon was OLD , ordinary, mediocre, plain-jane vanilla until he became the NFL's MVP and looked like Dan Marino for a few years out there in Oakland. He reeled off 4 straight pro bowl appearances. He sat on the bench for a lot of teams , for the VAST majority of his NFL career, and if not for the 'tuck' rule, would have led the Raiders to consecutive SB appearances..Brees was ordinary, mediocre, and plane-jane vanilla until SD drafted Rivers. Sudenly, Brees is a pro bowl , top 5 NFL QB.Vinny Testeverde was OLD and mediocre, until the Jets made him their starting QB, and, if not for an untimely fumble by Keith Byars in the AFC championship game in Denver years ago, the Jets would have gone to the SB. Testeverde enjoyed one of his best season as a pro in 1998 with the Jets.Mark Rypien was mediocre, until he had one of the best seasons ever by a QB, and won a SB..Phil Simms was VERY mediocre, he's now on the bubble to make it into the hall of fame after winning two SBs, a SB MVP by having one of the greatest QB performances of ALL-TIME in the biggest game of his career.Jeff Hostetler was mediocre, yet won a SB, and played well in Oakland for a few years.Steve Young was a career backup until he became the best QB in the NFL.Tom Brady was mediocre until Bledsoe got hurt.Randall Cunningham was out of football laying tile, when he got a call to come be the QB in Minnesota.

 Although I disagree with the Brady thing, Bledsoe was the mediocre one and Brady was the unknown (like Croyle)

I think an important thing to remember in response to nygiants56's post is that QB's are like wine, they age very well.

You can keep JaMarcus Russell and wait 3 years before he grooms into a good FF player. I'll go for the Marc Bulgers/Jon Kitna's of the world.

Let me put it this way.......as a KC homer, everything I hear is that the WANT Croyle to vbe the guy.......but they dont know if he will be. What really scares me is that KC let Gannon go at almost the exact age Huard is. Luckily the re-signed Huard, but signing him to that much money to be insurance would be wasting a potential great opportunity. Gannon had not done much prior to 97-98 in KC either.

I have seen, heard or observed NOTHING that leads me to believe Brodie Croyle is the QB for KC the next 5-7 Yrs. KC QB history tells me that Croyle will not amount to much.....

To be honest, if KC was going to go young, I would've rather sen them sign David Carr than go with Croyle.

Right on target Kevin. I agree that Carr should have been given a chance since he played with zero OL support and the new coach got rid of him to get rid of the stain of losing,,,e.g...scapegoat. I don't think that KC sees Huard as a QB that can win a superbowl for them. He played great last year but I think KC coaches have more faith that a 3rd round draft pick could be the messiah than the career backup QB that played very well for one year last year.

I think Huard is the perfect buy low this year. Croyle's weak arm and injuries will be a factor soon enough

From Sportingnews.com

INSIDE DISH: Don't underestimate the Chiefs' desire to have Brodie Croyle win the starting quarterback job. If Croyle wins the spot instead of Damon Huard, it allows the Chiefs to keep pace with each of their AFC West rivals. San Diego and Denver recently installed a new, young starting quarterback and Oakland will soon. If Croyle fails to win the job, the Chiefs will have to reopen the position for competition again next year and perhaps draft another young quarterback to replace the failed Croyle.

Also as a KC homer, I couldn't agree with you more about attempting to sign Carr... why not? he has alot of talent but just got beat up in Hou (not his fault by the way). I mean, take a chance on him since KC's past history of drafted QB's is not so stellar.

Actually it's an idiotic theory."Start this guy!""Why coach? He hasn't proven squat and last year's QB did really well!!""well..um......he's young"
