***Dan Lambskins Top 100 Favorite Vocalists*** 47 - Tori Amos (1 Viewer)

Dan Lambskin

Footballguy
Alright, for those of you not familiar with a Lambskin List, this is meant to be a fun exercise

This is in no way a best vocalists, most influential vocalists, etc type of list. There’s a lot of those types that just didn’t make the cut.

These are my personal favorites, some more recent, some I liked quite some time ago and aren’t necessarily in my regular rotation but I still like them

There’s no hard criteria here, and there’s a lot of people on here that aren’t necessarily known for their vocal prowess, but I still like them or the way they front a band

So let’s have some fun and talk some music

100 - Katie White - The Ting Tings

Katie is part of the duo The Ting Tings who burst into the scene in 2008 when Shut Up And Let Me Go was featured in an Apple IPod commercial (member iPods)

It was catchy enough that I bought their debut album We Started Nothing

something about that Euro Indie Pop voice of hers I really dig, although I haven’t really dug into the rest of their catalog, but based on the few bangers they have I had to find a place for her

Recommended listening

That’s Not My Name

Shut Up and Let Me Go

99 - Mick Jagger - The Rolling Stones

Pretty sure everyone knows who this guy is, he’s only being doing it for 60 years or whatever. Anyway, I like the stones, as well as a lot of other classic rock bands, but vocally, eh, a lot of them just don’t crack my favorites list. Maybe it’s over saturation, I don’t know

I originally had Wheeler Walker Jr slotted in here (he’s basically a comedy writer that does shtick country music) but it just didn’t seem right. That and posting any of his song titles would probably get me banned. Anyway, if you like country music / and or sophomoric shtick check him out

Back to Mick, he’s one of the most prolific front men in history, so in hindsight it would have been hard to leave him off (note: I expect half the posts in this thread will consist of “X is better than Mick????”)
That said, I tend to like his softer stuff, and I feel like he’s just a little too soft for my tastes when he tries to rock out

Favorite lyrics:
All the dreams we held so close
Seemed to all go up in smoke
Let me whisper in your ear
Angie, Angie
Where will it lead us from here?

98 - Sandra Nasić - Guano Apes

I forgot exactly how i discovered them, IIRC my wife’s stepmom got a bunch of CDs from a police auction and they were in there. Not sure what that dude did but he had a lot of pretty good CDs

I don’t expect them to be too well known on this board, but if we have any fans of German Nu-Metal you should check them out. She’s got a pretty unique voice IMO

Recommended listening

Proud Like A God (yes the whole album)

Or at least check out the song Proud Like A God, or Lord of the Boards

97 - Charlie Starr - Blackberry Smoke

A little bit county, a little bit rock n roll. I really only discovered these guys a few years ago, and I was surprised to see they’ve been around damn near 25 years

This is just good old fashioned drinking and partying music. Have had a chance to see them live twice and they put on a good show. Charlie does a pretty good job of keeping an easy pace vocally, not too heavy, not too slow…just someone I can sit and listen to for hours. Perfect music for just kicking back and having a few beers on the porch. Reminds me a bit of another classic American rock singer who will appear later

Favorite lyrics
Two six packs of Shiner

Purely as a vocalist this ranking is fair - as a “front man” he’d be much higher but his voice, while unique, isn’t “pretty”.

Have had a chance to see them live twice and they put on a good show.
I saw them as the headliners on a tribute to southern rock tour. They played a full set of their music - and then started a set of classic southern rock songs (Allmans, Skynrd, Marshall Tucker…) with their opening acts (Duane Betts, Devon Allman, Wildfeathers and Larkin Poe) joining in. Great show.

95 - Jack Black - Tenacious D

Jack can be a little over there top at times, and is best in small doses, but that self titled Tenacious D album has some absolute bangers like Wonderboy and everyone’s favorite love song **** Her Gently (you can often hear my wife yell “Alexa! Next Song!” when this comes on) but it’s hard to deny someone who can sing the Greatest Song In The World (well, a Tribute anyway)

Look into my eyes and it's easy to see
One and one make two, two and one make three
It was destiny
Once every hundred-thousand years or so
When the sun doth shine and the moon doth glow
And the grass doth grow-ho

Hmm having issues with some of the links to the posts in the OP maybe because of updating thread title? If there’s a workaround im missing let me know

94 - Militia Vox

forget exactly where I came across her, but she’s got a number of great cover songs
46 & 2 by Tool
We Don’t Need Another Hero by Tina Turner

Her original stuff is good as well, just a big powerful female voice with a metal edge and frequently collaboration with others in the genre (including Van Helsing's Curse with Dee Snider and Judas Priestess an all female Judas Priest tribute band)

93 - Jared Gomes - Hed PE

Gomes is the lead vocalist for Nu-Metal band Hed PE, but as far as Nu-Metal goes they are much more rap centric, although he does work in some good growls as well

They start to go a little wacky later in their career, especially with songs like American Beauty (I won’t link that one, although there is some debate if the lyrics are just meant to be an eff you go the record label) and get pretty bogged down with 9/11 Truther related tracks

he really shines on their 2nd album Broke, which i would consider a perfect album (every track is good)

The tracks below best represent his style and range, but as I said anything on Broke is worth a listen if you are a fan of the genre

Bartender
Swan Dive
The Meadow

He wouldn’t make my top 1000 list as a vocalist. His voice is annoying and ruins the Stones for me.

92 - Matt Schultz - Cage The Elephant

Matt has been fronting Cage The Elephant since 2006 but didn’t really break out until 2008 with their hit Ain’t No Rest For The Wicked which I liked but basically just dismissed as a another run of the mill Indy band

Turns out it’s one of my teen son’s favorite bands, which I thought was odd since he gravitates more towards metal / hardcore. After seeing them live last fall I could tell they definitely had some punk influences (pixies being a big one) and despite having a broken foot and being on a scooter Matt brought it hard, especially to close out the show, I really enjoyed the level of energy

Couple others I really like by them

Come A Little Closer
Cold cold cold
Cigarette Daydreams

Definitely a band worth seeing live if you get the chance

91 - John McCrea- Cake

Im not a huge fan of Cake by any means (never owned an album, never saw them live) but I think John has such a cool an unique sounding voice that I’m rarely skipping a song of theirs if it comes on the radio or random library shuffle

Between radio hits like The Distance or Short Skirt/Long Jacket they also have a couple of great cover songs
I Will Survive
War Pigs

And one of my personal favorites
Sheep Go To Heaven
Goats…go to Hell

90 - Leonard Cohen

Our first of several Canadian singers, I think I first heard The Future on the Natural Born Killers Soundtrack. Great song

I’m sure he’s best known for Hallelujah even though most people associate that with Jeff Buckley now

Lots of people covered his Everybody Knows as well, including Concrete Blonde (I wanted to find a spot for Johnette Napolitano but just didn’t have room for her. I think that’s more a lack of my overall familiarity with her outside of this cover and Joey though)

That might be it for today, our next group will feature a dead grunge singer, our first country entry and one of the most underrated blues singers of all time

I know Cohen isn't going to be everyone's favorite "singer" but he did write some interesting songs, "First We Take Manhattan" is one of my favorites.
As to Johnette, one of the best female voices I've heard in rock. I remember her on Letterman more than once.
