***Dan Lambskins Top 100 Favorite Vocalists*** 47 - Tori Amos (2 Viewers)

67 - Jonathan Davis - Korn

Are you ready?

I remember a buddy of mine playing Korns self titled debut, I was a freshman in high school (maybe sophomore) and it was like nothing I had heard before. I liken it to first hearing Nirvana on the radio and how different it was compared to what else was being played at the time

The debut definitely had a rawer sound, with songs like Blind or Ball Tongue. Or Daddy but that song is a bit dark sided
Shoots and Ladders is a fun one too

Their follow up Life is Peachy kicks off with Twist which I can’t seem to find the lyrics for. Also a nice cover of Wicked and everyone’s favorite to sing along to A.D.I.D.A.S.

Other highlights include Freak On A Leash and Got The Life

I do regret not being able to catch them live in their heyday, I did catch the 30 year anniversary tour last fall and it seemed more like Jon was going through the motions, but still a good time

I'm hippling, but oh well. The first time I heard Jonathan Davis and Korn was pumping out of a hockey locker room at Mohawk Valley Community College in Central New York. It was where some of the Prop 48 kids went before cleaning up their academic act to go play DI hockey, and it was in the middle of nowhere. I've never forgotten the plaintive wailing and how Davis's voice came at you behind that non-blues based guitar (ask Rick Beato about Korn and the pentatonic scale) screech, and I was sure, sitting right there while taking a look at their locker room and the arena we were playing in that the Owl of Minerva had flown for our society.

I might have been right. I'll leave you all to discuss it.

And Grace Slick is a powerhouse and I like Jefferson Airplane a whole lot more than I would have thought back when I figured that owl had flown.

65 - Morgan Lander - Kittie

Hard to believe the girls in Kittie were only teens when they burst onto the scene with songs like Brackish and Spit

My favorite song by them (and one of my all time favorite cover songs) is Run Like Hell, going from melodic moans to sounding like a wounded animal on that final verse

You better run all day and run all night
And keep your dirty feelings deep inside
And if you're taking your girlfriend out tonight
You'd better park the car well out of sight
Cause if they catch you in the back seat trying to pick her locks
They're gonna send you back to mother in a cardboard box

64 - Dexter Holland- The Offspring

yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

I remember seeing them live back in college, and they opened up with All I Want. Place was dark and we were right up by the rail, and Dexter just starts out with the yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah into and the place just went nuts

My first exposure to them was Come Out And Play on MTV, which of course got me to go out and buy Smash which is another perfect album in my opinion.
Self Esteem is such a great singalong and the Title Track is really underrated

Some of their stuff can be a little corny, but they also have some hard hitting songs like Gone Away which is a great song about dealing with the loss of a loved one

Maybe in another life
I could find you there
Pulled away before your time
I can't deal, it's so unfair
And it feels, and it feels like
Heaven's so far away
And it feels, yeah, it feels like
The world has grown cold
Now that you've gone away
Leaving flowers on your grave
To show that I still care
Black roses and Hail Mary's
Can't bring back what's taken from me
I reach to the sky
And call on your name
And if I could trade, I would
And it feels, and it feels like
Heaven's so far away
And it stings, and it stings now
The world is so cold
Now that you've gone away
Now that you've gone away
I reach to the sky
And call on your name
And if I could trade, I would
And it feels, and it feels like
Heaven's so far away
And it feels, yeah, it feels like
The world has grown cold
Now that you've gone away

61 - Neil Fallon - Clutch

I’m mostly a fan of Clutch’s older stuff (Transnational Speedway League: Anthems, Anecdotes and Undeniable Truths and their Self Titled Album). They broke out around the same time as a lot of Nu-Metal bands but never really got lumped in with them. Much more Stoner Rock if you had to categorize them

Neil has such a deep commanding voice and conjures up some amazing growls

Some highlights

Big News 1
Escape From The Prison Planet
Spacegrass

And Binge and Purge…that song goes so hard at the end

59 - Scott and Seth Avett - The Avett Brothers

Ok hear me out, I’m treating this one like a coupled entry in horse racing (partly because I didn’t feel like taking the time to figure out who’s who on each track, but also because they’re both heavily featured on a lot of tracks). We’ll see one other entry like this

Anyway, couple of my favorites

January Wedding
Kick Drum Heart
Tin Man
Slight Figure Of Speech

My favorite is The Ballad of Love and Hate, there’s a live version from one of their albums that damn near brings me to tears when I hear it

Hate stumbles forward and leans in the door
Weary head hung down, eyes to the floor
He says, "Love, I'm sorry" and she says, "What for?"
"I'm yours and that's it, whatever"
"I should not have been gone for so long"
"I'm yours and that's it, forever"
"Your mine and that's it, forever"

Was hoping to catch these guys live last year but just couldn’t make it work, hopefully get them next time around

72 - Chester Bennington - Linkin Park
this seems low to me in a way. I'm of course not an expert on what makes a good vocalist and I wouldn't even want to attempt a list like this since I'd have a difficult time differentiating between good band and good vocalist. I think compared to someone like Dexter Holland (I don't know many people on this list yet), while I do like his voice, Chester probably had more range. When I was in HS, Hybrid Theory had just come out and I generally like them,

This would be a much different list if I went by skill or proficiency or whatever this is just personal favorites

There will be a lot of good bands / talented singers left off

57 - Michael Stipe - R.E.M.

such a great and influential band, while I’m not a huge fan I do like a lot of their songs and would love to see some sort of reunion tour

The One I Love
It’s The End Of The World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)
What’s The Frequency, Kenneth?
Orange Crush
The Sidewinder Sleeps Tonite (Calling Jamaica is one of my favorite mondegreens, right up there with There’s A Bathroom On The Right)
Man On The Moon

I do prefer their poppier up tempo stuff to their slower / ballady stuff

56 - Jim James - My Morning Jacket

Only been a fan of these guys for a few years, but man does Jim have an amazing voice. Also one of the better live acts I’ve seen, I think they rock a little harder than your typical Jam Band (although im far from an expert in that genre)

Mahgeetah
Smokin From Shootin
What A Wonderful Man
I Will Be There When You Die

Joe was born in New York City
Son of Paul and Catherine
Always down and always out
But his 'morrows always seemed jus' fine
There will be bigotry and
There will be open minds
There will be days of peace
You'll never have the time
As long as you keep a straight face-I will be there when you die
I was born in east Kentucky
Home of where the grass is dyed
Always down and always out
But my 'morrows always seemed just fine
There will be bigotry and
There will be open minds
There will be days of peace
I hope you have the time
As long as you keep a straight face
I will be there when you die

That last one is an absolutely beautiful song that really highlights his vocals

68 - David Draiman - Distubed

I was a little ahead of the curve on these guys, as I recall they were featured on HBO’s Reverb just prior to breaking out with The Sickness

The Game , Stupify and Down With The Sickness are all great examples of his style, and they have a couple of decent covers with The Sound Of Silence and Land Of Confusion but my favorite song of his is actually Forsaken from Queen of the Damned
I consider their cover of Sound of Silence to be the best cover of all time and yes, it's because of David's vocals.

My favorite part of Sidewinder is when Stipe cracks up after singing the line about Dr. Seuss.

James is one of the best talents to emerge in the rock universe in this century.

Run Thru and Steam Engine are renowned for their incredible guitar work, but James’ vocals on them are incredible as well.

55 - Chuck D - Public Enemy

It’s harder to isolate someone from an ensemble cast but Chuck has such a commanding presence, while Flavor Flav is more there for…flavor, for lack of a better word

I’m sure I had some awareness to them prior to Apocalypse 91... The Enemy Strikes Black, but that collaboration with Anthrax on Bring the Noise was what likely drove me to buy the album

Bass! How low can you go?
Death row, what a brother knows
Once again, back is the incredible
The rhyme animal
The uncannable D, Public Enemy Number One

Lotta great tracks on that album too like Can’t Truss It and Shut Em Down. By the Time I Get to Arizona too

Of course we can’t forget the classics like Fight the Power and 911 Is A Joke although I guess that one is nearly all Flav

54 - Scott Weiland - Stone Temple Pilots / Velvet Revolver

First of all sorry to any Velvet Revolver fans but im not including any feature tracks from them

I wasn’t as big of a fan as STP In their heyday as I was some of their contemporaries, but over time I’ve really come to enjoy Scott’s work with them, whether harder stuff like Sex Type Thing or Dead and Bloated or softer stuff like Big Empty or Pretty Penny

I’m sure I could rattle off another 5-10 hits here but for sake of time I’ll move on to the next artist

Oh and another obligatory gone too soon because drugs and depression or whatever artist

53 - Jon Bon Jovi - Bon Jovi

not sure if people will think I’m overrating him, but Slippery When Wet was one of the first cassette tapes i remember buying (along with a hair metal band that I said was a Top 50 band but did not make the cut on vocals here, and another one that will appear later.). Keep in mind I’m old but not nearly as old as some of you, but little Lambskin used to have a used records store within walking distance, and this was back in the day when you’d let 7-8 year olds just wander around and buy tapes and rent R rated movies from the local video store because nobody cared back then)

Anyway, I rocked the hell out of that tape. Livin’ On A Prayer would probably be a Top 100 song for me if I ever do that list

Wanted Dead or Alive never gets old for me either , and I’m a sucker for Blaze of Glory

Some of his stuff can be a bit cheesy but I’ll still sing along

I've seen a million faces and I've rocked them all

When STP hit it big with Plush, the radio completely wore me out on the song. Just when I thought it was fading away, they released the acoustic version of the song. That kept me away from them for a long time. It wasn't until I heard the Tiny Music CD that I started appreciating them.

52 - Eric Burdon - The Animals / War

great voice on this guy, fronted 2 bands although his time with War was fairly short

House of the Rising Sun is such a great song, I think just about everybody has covered this song at some point, and even if his version isn’t the original is the definitive one in my opinion

Baby Let Me Take You Home is another good one

Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood is another song covered by multiple people. Again I’ll take Eric’s version, but Santa Esmeralda does a nice version as well

As far as War, I’ll go with Spill the Wine as my favorite with him on lead

My two favorites from Burdon are Sky Pilot and Monterey

51 - Billy Corgan - Smashing Pumpkins

Billy has kind of a unique voice, and it can be a bit grating at times, but more often than not it works (disclaimer: never seen him live and I’ve heard mixed reviews)

Cherub Rock from Siamese Dream is the first song I recall hearing from them, and while there are a lot of great songs on that album, melancholy and the infinite sadness was an album I feel in love with
Couple of my favorites from that one

Bullet With Butterfly Wings
Porcelains of the Vast Oceans
Thirty-Three
F You (An Ode to No One)

Also like their cover of Landslide and Glynis which IIRC was released on the No Alternative compilation album (great album by the way)

50 - Eddie Vedder - Pearl Jam

I’m still of the opinion they only have 3 good albums, but I’ve never really given their other stuff much of a listen either. Tried Yield, just couldn’t get into it

Also on my list to see live, but seems like they only come within 4 hours of Detroit and I don’t like them enough to drive that far

Anyway, I like them enough to put Eddie in the Top 50

Personal favorites
Alive
Yellow Ledbetter
Better Man
Elderly Woman Behind The Counter In A Small Town
Corduroy
Indifference

49 - Kurt Cobain - Nirvana

I think I’ve mentioned before, but hearing Smells Like Teen Spirit for the first was a transcendental moment for me. I was like 11 or 12 when this came out so I was mostly into MTV and radio which was still playing a lot of hair metal and stuff like Vanilla Ice and Boyz II Men. I did have an older brother that was into Thrash Metal, but this was still a sound I really had never heard before

I’m not sure how Nirvana would have evolved over time had things gone differently, but they definitely gave us some great songs over their short time, and Kurt was obviously a big reason for their success

I still remember the shock of them playing Lithium at the MTV awards instead of Teen Spirt. Polly is another favorite, although I never realized the dark sided inspiration for that song

Their Unplugged performance is a masterpiece IMO, whether it’s covering The Man Who Sold The World or Lead Bellys Where Did You Sleep Last Night or their own All Apologies that was just simply an amazing performance

I like a few of their songs, like Cherub Rock, but I mostly find his voice irritating.

48 - Bradley Nowell - Sublime

Huge fan of their 1996 self titled. I’ve tried to get into their older stuff, I owe it another chance, but that one came out right before my Sr year of High School and I played the hell out of it

I have fond memories of a bus full of us singing along to What I Got during Spring Break in Cancun

Wrong Way is still fun to sing along to

Santeria is probably my favorite, but I do like some of the deeper cuts like Burritos and Caress Me Down

Sadly Brad was another one gone too soon

47 - Tori Amos

Tori is super talented. While she does get a bit pitchy for me, she’s got a great voice, but I need it in small doses. Took my wife to see her a few years back and enjoyed it

Cornflake Girl, Silent All These Years and Crucify are probably her best known stuff, but she’s got an amazing cover of Enjoy The Silence and Take To The Sky was a great live performance
Yeah, this is a no for me. To my ears her voice constantly sounds like she is about to sneeze.

Not Tom Waits-level irritating, but too close to that for comfort.

Big fan since I bought "Little Earthquakes" based on a girlfriend's suggestion.
