Danny Woodhead (1 Viewer)

One interesting scenario, as hinted to in the article, is that TJ will play more passing downs.

So that would mean Green would eat into the workload between the tackles more to spell TJ and short yardage situations. Keeping TJ fresher for the passing down work.

This scenario may actually increase both Green's and TJ's value in a PPR league.

IMO, he doesnt have any.

If the jets couldnt (or just flat out wouldnt) find a away to make Leon Washington a game changing weapon in the passing game, i dont see how Woodhead will make any sort of fantasy impact. Add in the possible emergence of Greene, and Woodhead's value is severely limited.

Yeah, he's explosve and shifty, so there's a chance he could catch one and break it. But there's no way he'll make any sort of consistent impact barring another injury.

thanks to the coaching staff at Chadron State I was able to get my hands on 4 of his game tapes from college, the actual coaching tape - not a tv broadcast. The buzz on him was big in the midwest/west, and I had to see for myself if he had NFL game.

What I saw then is the same thing I see now. Woodhead is fantastic in space. He is ultra quick, can change direction without losing much speed, and can freeze defenders with shoulder fakes.

However, Woodhead struggles to run between the tackles. He also cannot run through arm tackles with ease. Woodhead also looks to bounce most everything outside, which does not work consistently in the pros.

I like his moves and instincts, but one arm can bring him down too easily and thus his upside will always be limited in the pros.

As someone who has watched him, he is a very bad RB
Ok, there's absolutely no way you can get away with a statement like that. The kid broke the NCAA record for rushing yards in a career. There's absolutely no way he's a "very bad RB." I would give you "Not an NFL RB" but not that.

Woodhead to be used more on third-downs

Wondering what his value might be going forward? Since the Jets signed him to the team as a WR, he has dual eligibility (RB/WR), also wondering since he has great speed if he might be used on kick returns.
Apparently FBG thinks the Jets won't have 3rd downs this week because he isn't listed in projections....
In fairness the article is speculative in nature - the coaching staff didn't come out and say he'll definately be used in that role. Also even in that blurb its states:
The Jets couldn't find a way to involve three backs before, so it's hard to imagine them doing so now
Thomas Jones is a more than adequate pass catcher. He'll likely stay in the game more on third downs and Greene will spell him more on 1st and 2nd downs than Washington did. Woodhead may see some time, but it would be hard to project much work for him at this point.

Also he looked pretty good in the preseason, which again doesn't mean he's necessarily an "NFL RB", but he's certainly not a "very bad RB".He does many things well, and has blazing speed and great instincts/moves. He couldn't be a feature back as he's not a strong inside runner and doesn't have the buld to add a lot of bulk, but he could be a decent role player. They were trying to make him a slot WR before Washington went down.

Woodhead = Great white hope.

Don't beleive me check out his wiki page.

Some highlights:

2nd in NCAA in career rush yds

Most single season rush yards

The only player ever to gain more all purpose yard in a single season than woodhead is Barry Sanders.

2nd player ever to scoree 100 tds in college

ran over 200 yds in 19 of 39 games

he averaged 15.5 actual points a game in college

in the combine last year....

2nd best 40 time among rbs

best proagility time, 2nd best vertical, best shuttle

I am not saying he is anywhere on the fantasy radar, but you can't argue that he hasn't done absolutely everything you could possibly do given his oppurtunity. His 158yards 2TDs (8.7 YPC) in preseason should come as to no surprise. I hope he gets a shot one day, because I will certainly be watching.

He reminds me of a Darren Sproles - great in space but hard to see him as anything other than a returner or a 3rd down back.

Agreed. His absolute best-case is as a Brian Westbrook or Warrick Dunn type, but he's probably not as good of a between the tackles runner as even those two. He's certainly got the speed though.Ask any Nebraska fan about Danny Woodhead and you'll get a long diatribe about Bill Callahan and his lack of recruiting him as an in-state prospect that set a ton of state records (ala Eric Crouch). He was knocked as "too small" at 5'7 195lbs by the coaching staff, who turned around and handed the starting RB job to 5'7" 195lb Cory Ross (of Ravens KR fame).

Granted, it was garbage time against the worn down Raider defense, but he ran between the tackles just fine for those 3 carries he got. He's more Like L Washington than Sproles I think. While running between the tackles is never going to be his strong suit, he can do it... and he can break an arm tackle. He did not attempt to bounce outside either. He is listed at 5'7", but he's 195 pounds. That is an inch shorter than Safety Jim Leonard, but 10 pounds heavier. Very similar in size to Washington. I never saw any of his college film, but he does not shy away from contact as a Jet this year. He also had a pretty remarkable preseason game, although it was against two's and threes. As far as his FF value? pretty much nill I think. But, the Jets did change his number to 83 just before the Washington injury, so they were looking to get him on the filed as a slot reciever. Now, he might play a bit of RB and a bit of slot. He has very good hands. Shon Greene does not. Jones has never been a real good pass recieving back, basically, just adequate. That might be the crack Woodhead could take advantage of. There is a bit of the "Rudy" factor when it comes to Woodhead, and that seems to upset some people, which is strange. The "white hope"? What a stupid thing to post.
