Jacksonville Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio on Friday finally cleared up the status of veteran linebacker Mike Peterson, telling ESPN that Peterson has been permanently demoted to backup status.

"Daryl Smith is our starting middle linebacker," Del Rio said in a telephone conversation after Friday's practice, as the Jaguars got ready for the undefeated Tennessee Titans.

"There will be no meetings," Del Rio said. "He has to embrace his new role on the team."On Thursday and Friday, Peterson practiced with special teams for the first time in years.
obviously mike pete is gone next year. i would have thought durant would be the man in the middle, he's got more talent than smith. is it possible they will move him there next year, or does williams have other plans? other than fletcher, what other fantasy studs have williams' defenses produced.

Durant or Smith, who is the player to grab. It seems like Durant has more upside, and produced well last year when Peterson was out.

I've left open the possibility that Durant could be moved to the middle, but I think there's a pretty small chance of that happening. The coaching staff has repeatedly moved Smith to the middle in Peterson's absence and have been quoted as saying he's been a solid player there. Durant could work well in either spot; however, since it's now becoming clear that they likely haven't seen Peterson in their plans for some time now, you'd think they'd have begun giving Durant some practice snaps there at some point in the past six months. Gregg Williams rarely had an impact MLB prior to London Fletcher. He wants a guy that knows his responsibility and doesn't stray from it. If there's a talented player there, he'll be productive. If not, there isn't anything in the scheme that will artificially inflate his tackle value. A decent pass rusher may get an extra sack or three due to Williams' aggressiveness, but the scheme isn't a ticket to monster numbers.Durant is the more dynamic player and he has five fewer tackles than Smith despite splitting time early in the season, not playing in the nickel and missing over a game with a groin injury. Smith has never had stud production in the middle and Durant becomes an every-down player with Peterson benched. Durant is the player you want here.

No shock about Peterson, given everything that happened - I think they were looking for an excuse to do this for a while.

I think Peterson is worth holding in dynasty, does anyone disagree?

Depends on how deep your league is, but he had borderline value this year while he was playing. Another year older next year in a role TBD, I would probably rather take a shot on a developing player. Again, depends on your team and league.

some good stats from Durant tonight; I noticed Peterson got 5 solos himself... was there a rotation or something?

There was a note late Saturday from a beat writer that noted Del Rio saying that Peterson took most of his snaps at Will late last week. Now there's this...

Jacksonville TU

But after the Jaguars gave up consecutive touchdowns on the Titans' first two drives of the second half, Del Rio sent Peterson in the game in place of outside linebacker Justin Durant. Peterson played the rest of the game except on third downs, when Durant came back in.

Peterson was credited with five tackles, though he played less than half the game. He was second only to Durant and Rob Meier, who were credited with six. Daryl Smith, who played in Peterson's old spot in the middle, also had five tackles.
What a mess....smacks of someone trying to keep his job as head coach. One thing seems again certain -- Daryl Smith isn't likely to be a consistent MLB in the box score. This is essentially an 11-0 vs 4-1 split in favor of the every-down WLB despite 31 rush attempts.

Is this a situation to just stay away from as far as trying to start Durant weekly from here on out? If he is going to swap out Durant for Peterson at any given time......????

Entering last week, I was worried that the Adibi/Greenwood/Bentley group was the OLBBC. That's not a concern anymore. This is. Del Rio wouldn't say anything in his presser yesterday apparently and Peterson took the "anything to help the team" vanilla approach. The best thing that happened for Durant was that the Jags lost this game. I can't imagine that he sits if this team is out of the playoff hunt, but there was clearly a lot more to this story than we originally heard. The only thing I've heard -- from Michael Wright -- was that tackling may have been an issue for Durant.

If Durant isn't playing on base downs, Peterson is only a base defensive player (in rotation) and Smith is Smith, I think twice about this situation unless/until we get a straight answer on the field.

I'd bet that Durant goes back to an every-down role this week, but it's really hard to read Del Rio right now.

Question... Both Yahoo & MFL credit Durant w/ 8 solos; NFL.com gives him 6.... which one is right? This is huge because I will lose multi games if those 2 tackles are taken away

Durant had two special teams tackles according to the Gamebook. Depends on whether or not a league counts those -- looks like yours do.
