Daunte Culpepper likely to start? (1 Viewer)

My QBs this year have been a hodgepodge of mediocre crap this year - I am starting Culpepper with confidence this week.

Schedule:

Jax

@ Carolina

Tampa Bay

Tennessee

Minnesota

@ Indy

New Orleans

@ Green Bay

Week 16 vs NO is about the only decent game left for Culpepper to throw without running for his life. Maybe Jacksonville, but how much can he do with one week?

Anyone looking to pick up CPep... good luck. I'll pass.

there's no way a guy comes off the street and start QB for a team he has no affiliation with. What do you expect CPep to draw plays on the dirt w/ a stick? He doesn't know the plays nor the terminology. Stanton will start.

Culpepper to start

Every indication is that free agent QB Daunte Culpepper -- who hasn't even officially signed a contract yet -- will be the Lions' starting quarterback on Sunday against Jacksonville.

QB Dan Orlovsky, who started the last four games, was sporting on removable hard cast on his right hand on Monday. When asked if he expects to practice on Wednesday, Orlovsky said "We'll see on Wednesday.''

That's not a typical answer from the normally cocky and confident Orlovsky. I was expecting an answer like "I fully expect to practice Wednesday.''

Jay Glazer of Fox Sports is reporting that Orlovsky could miss several weeks with the injury.

Orlovsky said he sprained his thumb on the first play of the game and it was painful the rest of the way -- he threw a total of 47 passes in the game. Orlovsky said he didn't think it limited his play, but he said he took a pain pill during the game because of the discomfort.

It's my belief that the Lions know Orlovsky won't play this week and are playing games with the media because they don't want the Jaguars to know exactly who is going to start on Sunday -- teams put together their weekly game plans on Tuesday and the Lions don't want to give the Jaguars a head start.

Even if Orlovsky is healthy enough to play, on Monday head coach Rod Marinelli sounded like a guy who was eager to get Culpepper in the lineup as soon as possible. Culpepper is familiar with Detroit's schemes because it's the same three-digit passing system the Vikings used when Culpepper played there for seven years.

Marinelli said he would give the majority of snaps this week (beginning on Wednesday) to the player he thought would be starting on Sunday, but also said he wouldn't reveal that information to the public. With it looking unlikely that Orlovsky will be that guy -- and the fact the coaches don't have enough confidence in Drew Stanton -- it appears the Lions will be counting on Culpepper to be ready for Sunday's game.

Culpepper was at the team's practice facility at Allen Park this afternoon and he's expected to sign his two-year deal later today or tomorrow. The Lions is expected to officially announce the signing at some point on Tuesday.

The title should be changed to Culpepper likely to start instead of will start. There has not been anything said by the Lions and even though it seems likely that Culpepper will start, it is not a fact right now.

Why not?

1st and 10, hand off to Rudi.

2nd and 10, hand off to Rudi.

3rd and 10, throw to CJ.

4th and 10, punt.

Repeat.

Crazy question because Detroit didn't necessarily seem like the most likely team for CPep to go to, but was Orlovsky injured on Sunday?
:popcorn:And as a Stanton owner, all I can say is :(
Let me understand this:You drafted the third string QB on the Lions? What is this, a 128 team FF league?
I have him in two 40+ man roster dynasty leagues, one with 16 teams, the other with 14 teams. I drafted him in one last year, when Martz was there; the other I got him in a big trade this year, after Kitna was IR'd and he was effectively the 2nd stringer (and seemingly likely to start some games at the end of this season). All comedy aside, Stanton certainly seemed like a better dynasty QB prospect to have than Fitzpatrick, O'Sullivan, and Thigpen at various times this year, so yeah, I have him on a couple of my rosters.

So you practice 5 different plays each day. By Friday you have 25 plays practiced. Sounds good enough. We are talking about the Lions so it really matters not. :goodposting:

Blackdot.

I had scooped him up in both my leagues. I, for one, am excited to see what he can do.

Tom 'Killer' KowalskiFun guy to listen. Very authoritative demeanor. Great entertainer. Also, full of it and himself.

Mighiganders will back me up on this one.

Killer gets stuff wrong. A lot. Not quite in the same league as Mort, but often enough that you remember it after you've been by relying on him. Gets a lot of good info sometimes as well.

Take it with a grain of salt. It may or may not happen.

ETA: it was an opinion column, as noted on the byline.

Also, it should be noted Killer had a question mark at the end of his headline

Culpepper to start for Lions on Sunday?

Pure speculation, Killer's specialty.

Yeah, we need a question mark at the end of the thread title as well. We have zero confirmation of this.

:goodposting: :pickle: :P

Well, time to start using the WW to p/u every D that plays the Lions....

I'm a Michigander and I think he gets some stuff wrong at times because he goes out on a limb to predict things. He doesn't make up false things or anything, but he'll take information like Caulpepper signing with Detroit and give his opinion on whether or not C. Pepper will be starting. Like you mention, he also gets a lot of good information, so maybe he heard something from someone he knows and wrote the article.Personally, I find it pretty hard to believe that a guy signed 6.5 days before a game, off the street and never a Detroit Lion will start for them. It just doesn't make any sense......but whatever. What's the worst thing that can happen......they lose?

Well I taught Rod Marinelli everything he knows about head coaching. It took 2 whole weeks of playing "Madden '94." So trust me, he knows that you can just "flip" the play to add a little diversity. So Daunte's got a solid 50 plays to work with.

I just heard on local radio that the Lions are not going to play Stanton. It will be Drew Henson off the practice squad or Culpepper.Stanton must really be bad.

Little mini-flap last week with comments from the OC (forget the dude's name); in answering questions about Stanton, he twice used the word 'embarrass' - as in (paraphrasing), "we don't want to send Drew out there and have him embarras himself. Marinelli immediately backpeddled saying 'it was a poor choice of words', but the story got back to Stanton, and he had some mild retorts that got printed. It's ugly over in Allen Park this fall...

Thanks for the heads up. I wasn't aware of this:

Lions' Colletto won't 'embarrass' Drew Stanton by playing him

By NICHOLAS J. COTSONIKA’S

FREE PRESS SPORTS WRITER

Offensive coordinator Jim Colletto explained today why the Lions aren’t playing backup quarterback Drew Stanton.

“The experiment to throw him in there right now wouldn’t be fair to him at this point,” Colletto said.

Why?

“Well, he’s not ready to do that yet,” Colletto said. “I’m not going to embarrass the kid just to prove a point to somebody else.”

Stanton was a second-round pick out of Michigan State last year. But three days into training camp, he went on injured reserve because of a knee problem. He was not allowed to practice the entire season, per NFL rules.

In the off-season, Stanton had his mechanics changed for the second time in two years and even struggled to throw a spiral at times. He played in two preseason games this year, then suffered a thumb injury that kept him out of the last two exhibitions and the first part of the regular season.

Colletto said Stanton is throwing the ball way better than he ever has, but he is still far behind Dan Orlovsky, a fifth-round pick in 2005. Orlovsky has made only three NFL starts, but he has had years' more practice time.

“The big difference is one has played a lot,” Colletto said. “Drew is like a rookie. I mean, he didn’t do anything last year, and that’s not his fault. I mean, he didn’t do anything. …

“You need another preseason with him to really get a sense of that.”

Told the fans wanted to see Stanton to evaluate him for the future, Colletto said: “Well, it’s hard. The fans want a lot of things. So do we. But I’m not going to put a youngster in there and embarrass him in a live NFL game where the guys on the other side don’t care who the quarterback is till he’s real comfortable with what he’s doing. And he’s getting closer and closer to doing that.”

Stanton has taken almost all of his reps with the scout team the past three weeks because Orlovsky needed all the reps he could get, Colletto said. But Stanton took about 20% of the reps with the main offense Wednesday because Orlovsky has played enough now where he doesn’t need to take them all.

Will Stanton play this year?

“Well, I don’t know,” Colletto said. “We’ll see how that all plays out.”
This sounds like Stanton simply hasn't had the reps in the new offense given the limitations caused by his injuries. Still, Colletto's an idiot for saying it that way.

LOL Lions lifer here. They draft a QB in the second round 2 years ago and they won't play him. Nothing surprises me anymore with this franchise, and that didn't start with this move either.

I saw him throw an end over end pass in the preseason and that was pretty much all I needed to see.....

Let’s not forget that CPep wasn’t exactly known as a rocket surgeon during his time in Minny. Grasping 5 plays a day (10 with the flip :lmao: ) might be too much to ask.

Culpepper did fine with Moss... now he has the younger version.... I don't care if he starts as long as he has the Megatron Ratio and gets him the football

As a transplanted Lions homer, this all illustrates just how horribly effed we really are.

That said, as a Megatron owner and believer, if Orlovsky is really hurt, then I welcome C-Pep because he'll prob. lean hard on force-feeding the ball to CJ, and like other posters have pointed out, if Stanton could tell his ### from a hole in the ground, there's not way they make this move.

Can't wait to see how they go about tanking loss number 9 next Sunday! (sigh) just shoot me now.

Now I'm no Dynasty eggspurt, but if my qb3 i've been holding onto loses his starting job to an unsigned free agent, I might wanna look somewhere else for a prospect. Is Charlie Batch or Scott Mitchell available?

People always throw the "0-16" out there... but the Lions really are starring it directly in the eyes.

Also, Stanton was way behind Orlovsky??? Your going to tell me that your 2nd round QB is way behind somebody that is struggling that bad in the NFL. The guy ran out of the back of his endzone! Technically the only people that were behind him were in aisle 5. This team needs a miracle not to go 0-16 this is their schedule....

vs. Jac

@ Carolina

vs TB

vs Tenn

vs Min

@ Indy

vs NO

@ GB

The only thing I can see is a lucky home field win vs Minnesota (no offense vikings fans, said lucky)
