David Dodds' "The Perfect Draft" (1 Viewer)

David Dodds' article in The Footballguys mag. is excellent, but in a 2 QB league I know I will have to alter this strategy because QBs will be in much more demand. David recommends not taking a QB until about 10 are drafted in a 1QB league. How would you (David if you're out there) change this strategy for starting 2 QBs?

Your chances of finding a diamond in the rough at QB are HUGE compared to RB. If I'm not mistaken, you're about as likely to find a top 10 QB whether you take one early or wait.

 Not at all. He's telling you (I think, don't read FBG articles) that there's no reason to waste a middle round pick on a QB when there's no dropoff at all from 7 to about 20...

I just finished a 10 teamer and drafted 3 QBs for kicks.... took Favre in 11, Brunell in 14 and Carr in 16.

IMO all of them will be solid QB1's this year.

Why spend a 6th or 7th on a top-10 non-tier1 QB when you can spend an 11th or 12th on a QB for an underrated QB that's going to perform.

Every year there's great value late in the draft....

And without trying to de-rail the thread, you've been out at sea too long if you think that undermining one of the most informed FF Players around (and site owners) by using a socratic criticism somehow validates your view.

If you don't agree with him, you should post a supported opinion why, not just ask how someone can use such seemingly terrible logic.

Very true. I've had a top 5 QB the last 4 years running and I don't take my first QB until the 5th (16 team league).

Especially with guys like Carr, Brunell, Favre, Delhomme, Simms going so late... and they all look pretty solid IMO.... at least as much as a guy like Bledsoe or Brooks

So, in a 2 QB league how early would you guys take your QB1? What about the second QB? Would you take a backup (3rd QB)in a 19 round draft? If so how late. Assume a 10 team league. Thanks!

Gentlemen: the initial post was about a 2QB league. So leave out the posts about when to draft your QB in a league where you play only one QB. I play now only in 2QB leagues. In these leagues you cannot wait till the 8-11 rounds to draft your first QB. In these leagues they become priorities like RBs where you play 2 RBs. It is a struggle to balance out your positions and have some strength in each. the poster and I are asking those out there who play in 2 QB leagues what strategies they use and which they find the best.

It is always good to accurately read a post.

In a 2 QB league, it's even more important not make mistakes at the top. QBs are actually the most likely position at which players repeat top-10 performances, so I like to get two of them in the top 4 rounds, and take my chances at WR by not drafting one until the 5th or 6th round.

I've played in a two quarterback league for six years. My best drafts have occurred when I have waited until round 6 or 7 to take my first QB. Then, I draft my 2nd and 3rd QB relatively quickly after that. Three years ago, when my team won the league, I drafted a QB in 7, 8, and 10. You can still wait on a QB, but you need to make sure you have three quality starters.Last year, my co-owner and I were bored with our league's draft, which had become ridiculously predictable. Drafting six, we decided to draft QBs in rounds 1 (Mannning) and 2 (Culpepper). Despite Culpepper's busting, we were in contention all year. I would not recommend this strategy, but it made the draft a lot more interesting for us.

Last year I played in a 10 team league where you played 2 QBs 3RBs 3WRs/TE

This was the first time I played in a league like this and it was hard to pull a trigger at QB because of all of the QBs that were taken. I ended up with Collins and Brooks and I forget the other. I remeber I started to get the QBs in the 8th so you can see what quality was there. I do not know what I am going to do this year because I felt like if I had some better QBs I probably would have won.

There are also no PPR so it makes the RBs and QBs more important than WRs/TE.

I do know I started my draft with 3RBs in a row with D.Davis, Jackson, and Alexander.

So, in a 2 QB league how early would you guys take your QB1? What about the second QB? Would you take a backup (3rd QB)in a 19 round draft? If so how late. Assume a 10 team league. Thanks!
I take QB1 in round 1-2, QB2 in round 3-4, and QB3 in round 7-11in a 2QB, 10 team league, QB's are MUCH more important than running backs. the way it SHOULD be!

My strategy in 2 QB league is almost the same as in 1 QB league, believe it or not.

I wait until rounds 8 to 12 and take several in a row.

Last year it got me Bledsoe and E. Manning.

In general, I would say in 2 QB league you should wait until 10 to 12 QBs go off and then pull. At least that is my strategy.

NEVER EVER SPEND TOO MUCH ON A QB.

I have played in 2 QB leagues for several years, 10 teams, using 2 RB, 3WR,1flex (RB, WR), 1TE, 2 D, 1k.

The results of the drafts have been pretty consistent. Rb is still the most sort after position. You cannot wait to round 8 for all your QBs. On average over the years35 RBs are drafted by the ninth round compared to 20 QBs, and and 27 WRs and 4 Ds. If you wait till round 9, you can choose any of the 12 worst QBs in the NFL. With bye weeks and injuries that have occurred to QBs in the last few years, you must draft 3 QBS. there are only 32 to draft. the Rbs are still in greatest demand because of the quicker drop off in scoring and injuries. The WRs receive attention because we play ppr and they are used in the flex.

I have done both leagues and have transitioned between the two formats within the same league, so I caution you that while I think you should consider QB1 targets in round 5 (Delhomme, Brooks, E Manning) your league mates are going to jump on QB's in the early rounds so you have to prepare accordingly.

I have been playing start 2 Qb's for 10 years, 12 team league. Wr tend to drop a little, but qb's goes fast and furious. 5 in the first round every season. cannot wait until round 7 for first one, you will end up starting losman and pennington

The answer to this questions lies with VBD, so my advice is to run the VBD and see how it values QB's in your leagues scoring system.

I've been in a 10 team start 2 QB league for 13 years, and I ALWAYS wait until 12-15 QB's are gone until I get my first one. Based on my league's scoring system and roster rules, its been a no brainer. We start 2 QB, 2 RB, 2 WR and 2 flex (non QB), and 1 TE/K/D. I load up on RB's, grab the best two WR's after that and then take QB's.

Every year I have the same strategy and everyone complains that I do it, but they lack the discipline to take Dunn ahead of Holt, or Droughns ahead of Brady because the non-RB's are superstars and score more FF points, but VBD never lies and the RB's have more value in our league's scoring system.

Check out the FBG projections for this year, the difference between QB 10 and QB 20 is 1.75 points per game, that's nothing!

Also, every year QB's ranked in the 20's breakout and make the top ten, look at Brunell from last season. This year you can get guys like Warner, Kitna, McNair and Brunell after everyone else already has their 2 QB's. There is always QB value in the bottom third of the rankings and all of these guys are good bets to outperform their draft position.

HTH & GL

This is an interesting post... I have been playing in a 2QB keeper league for 7 years now - where all TDs are worth 6 points... also has PPR... and the QB/RB/WR balance is the best I have seen so far (playing in 2 other "usual" redraft and 2 other "usual" [DYNASTY] leagues)...It makes for very interesting trade offers... If your a fan of the NFL - you know that Tom Brady and/or Matt Hasselbeck are as important to their team as are Deshaun Foster and/or Willie Parker... it puts everything in perspective...

Anyway, the initial question was about draft strategy in a 2QB league... In the inital draft (or redraft for that matter) I try and grab two early on (i.e. the Manning brothers or Brady/Bulger) in rounds 1/4 and a third one in the 8/9/10th round (Carr, Simms) - even a 4th one with the last pick (Holcomb/Ramsey/Harrington) - a lottery ticket or insurance policy (by handcuffing VYoung to Volek, etc.)... that way, you have depth and trading leverage... since only 28 starts each week (bye weeks) - they offer a premium...

Often, and this is where it gets interesting... people forget about this particularity and focus way too much on RBs early on (as usual leagues do)... and find themselves with Edge/Rudi/Tatum - and only one "actual NFL" QB starter... then, you jump in and offer Carr for Rudi - because Carr is an improvement from Pennington or Grossman...

My 2 cents...

It looks like the strategies are all over the place on this one. I am leaning towards taking 2 QBs in the first 6 rounds depending on value.

Personally I am seeing myself doing something like this year in my 2 QB league

Peyton Manning in round 1

Carson Palmer or Tom Brady in round 2

In rounds 3,4,5 go for RB's like Curtis Martin, Warrick Dunn, Deuce McAllister, Ahman Green, Reggie Bush, Chester Taylor, Reuben Droughns, Cory Dillon, Thomas Jones, Fred Taylor

I see a lot of value in the RB's this year......

Than in rounds 6 and 7 address the WR position with a Donald Driver, Joey Galloway, Derrick Mason etc.........

I think this year in a 2QB league if you can score to top 5 QB's you'll be gold.

You can still wait on a QB, but you need to make sure you have three quality starters.
My main leage is a 2QB, 2RB, 3WR, TE, PK, DST league. I agree with the above for the most part. THe only difference is that I would wait to target a QB in the 7-11 range and then follow up very quickly ensuring a second QB in the top 15. In 2 QB leagues, it all depends on how fast they are going off the board. In ours, the top 10 QBs would not make it to round 7. More likely you are drafting your QBs in rounds 3-5, and then 5-7, and again in round 11.

I also look for a third QB in the 20s (23-28) for a bye week option and hope that he can have a career year.

This means that WR is sacrificed a little bit, but I find that there are generally more WR diamonds in the rough.

I find that there is always value to be found at QB after the first 15 are gone...if you are wise about your choices. Hence my example above of getting Bledsoe and E. Manning late last year.

Fill up at RB and WR.

I suggest the first five picks as:

RB, WR, RB, WR, RB

People ALWAYS overestimate the value of QBs..starting 2 chages supply and demand but truth that there is not that much differnce between QB10 and QB20.

so did any of you notice that David recommended taking three RB's with your first three picks if the "elite" 16 are still there, however if you look at the mock draft they did in the same magazine, Dodds took Holt with his third rd pick even thoe Willie Parker was still available (Parker is on his "elite" 16 rb grouping).

That is correct - the only difference between 1QB and 2QB leagues is that there is a big dropoff after the QB22 / QB24 range... and this is where you need to capitalize...In a 1QB league... the QB22 dropoff doesn't even come into play...

In a 2QB league... if you have 3 QBs prior to the QB22 dropoff - then you are in a compteitive advantage position (for bye weeks / matchups / trades)...

The QBs supply/demand issue becomes very similar to the RBs in a 2QB league...

Even more so - because QBs usually scores alot of points - you don't want to have a big 0 right there... and there are no "3rd down QB" to steal points - it's either a 0 or a 15 point week

If you look at the various VBD cheatsheets and excel sheets on the site, you'll see a dramatic increase in the value of QB's if you go from 1 QB to 2 per team. Using a standard non-PPR scoring system:

In a 12 team league Peyton Manning is around #22 overall pick, with the other top QBs starting around #35.

With 2QB & 2 RB, Peyton jumps to #8 overall pick, with a couple other QBs in the top 20.

The exact position varies depending on scoring system and projections used, but as a general rule, increasing the numbers at a position per team increases the value of those players.

It's more of a "guideline" than a "rule" :coffee:

In a 10 team dynasty draft (vets only) I took Lefty in rd 8, Brooks in rd 10, Farve in rd 12, and Volek in rd 17. Start 2. Dynasty wise it doesn't look great, but very solid for year 1 IMO.

I don't mean to hijack this thread, but has anyone had any success is tweaking the Draft Dominator to simulate a 2QB league?

I can't seem to get the thing configured to draft QB's early enough to simulate my league for mock drafting purposes.

Set your own numerical baselines rather than sticking with Joe's secret formula. If you set the QB baseline low enough, and the others high enough, you'll get QBs selected earlier. It also can help to tweak QB projections higher for the top 6-7 QBs, to reflect their low-risk status.

I think a lot depends on your scoring system in my league QB's get 6 pts for td passes, and -2 for int's/fumbles, I not going to take a top QB, but I don't want to roll the dice with a QB or might break out or spend 3 of my 14 roster spots for QB's. I feel a lot better if I get a 5/6 ranked QB in late 4th eary 5th round depending on where you draft. I think their's some good sleeper RB's this year, White, Brown, etc., I roll the dice with them as my 3/4 RB, rather then a QB late, just my 2 cents.

I find that there is always value to be found at QB after the first 15 are gone...if you are wise about your choices. Hence my example above of getting Bledsoe and E. Manning late last year.Fill up at RB and WR.I suggest the first five picks as:RB, WR, RB, WR, RBPeople ALWAYS overestimate the value of QBs..starting 2 chages supply and demand but truth that there is not that much differnce between QB10 and QB20.
yes but QB 20 is being benched every other week (guys like Warner), and Qb 10 is playing regularly. Does your roster have room to hold yet another QB backup in case one of your guys gets benched?
