David Harris discussion (1 Viewer)

The news was ominous today regarding injured ILB David Harris, who could be lost for a significant period with a pulled groin.

Eric Mangini said Harris, who missed the Buffalo game, is “a longer shot” to play Sunday than he was last week - a rare injury revelation by the coach. That Mangini all but admitted that Harris has suffered a setback doesn’t bode well for the talented linebacker. Speaking cryptically, Mangini said there are “some things we’re doing” with Harris. When asked directly if Harris is having surgery, Mangini declined to answer, saying he prefers not to discuss those matters publicly.

Harris wasn’t in the locker room during the media period. He locker appeared untouched, meaning he probably didn’t report today. Reading between the lines, it doesn’t look good.
I've gotta say, the Jets D didn't seem to suffer much without him...

I disagree. The Bills held the ball for about 15 minutes straight in the first half. They Jets D toughened up in the second half but the Bills still put together some decent drives. It was the Jets offense keeping the Bills offense off the field at the end and mistakes by the Bills offense that won the game. Bowens looked pretty lost out there.

Bowens looked lost, but as long as Jenkins brings the heat like he did last week, it won't matter much. The Jets completely thwarted the Bills running game, which is where I would think Harris absence would show up most. Now, if Jenkins/Ellis/Coleman start playing more uneven football, the Jets will suffer, but last week was one of the best defensive games they've played all year - there was some "bend but don't break" in the first half, but the defense still carried them to that victory.I don't think we're disagreeing that much, I guess the great play of the front three hid Bowens, and maybe Im mislabeling outstanding individual games by Jenkins and Revis as a good game by the D in general, although Rhodes and Ellis/Coleman also played very strong games.

Bowens was a mess on the first drive. Almost certainly directly responsible for Marshawn Lynch's long catch and run when he came on a delayed rush and lost track of his likely coverage responsibility. Was called for a hold on a play that ended up as a completion to his covered player anyway and drifted out of position on the TD catch to end the drive.I thought he looked better as the game progressed, but he's a definite step back from Harris. That Revis guy, though, he plays pretty okay.

Harris wasn't worth much in IDP. Why, I don't really know, because he was a monster in the second half last year.

Hope he gets better; healthwise and IDPwise.

Jenkins and Revis were beasts. Bowens is a huge downgrade from Harris but I think Rhodes can come up and help more to offset that a bit.

What are the thoughts on Bowens as he is still DL eligible in leagues and he is now essentially playing LB? In a tackle heavy league, do you think he would be worth starting as a DL?

That is exactly my thought. I was thinking he could be a nice DL depth guy. There isn't much of that left in my 12-team keeper league.

He unquestionably has starter value in leagues where he's classified as a DL. He may not be a great ILB on the field, but he's almost guaranteed four solos a week and doesn't look likely to give up too much of his pass rush chances.

LB Harris out at least 2-to-3 weeks

November 5, 2008

There's a hole in the wall that has become the Jets' run defense.

Inside linebacker David Harris, their leading tackler, underwent groin surgery Wednesday and will miss at least two or three weeks, according to a person with knowledge of the situation.

Harris was hurt two weeks ago, landing awkwardly while making a tackle against the Chiefs. He didn't play last week with what is believed to be a pulled or partially torn groin muscle. After two visits to a specialist in Philadelphia, he opted for surgery.

It's bad timing for the Jets. After the Rams, they face the Patriots and Titans, two of the top rushing teams.

Eric Mangini refused to give details, but his cryptic remarks made it seem ominous. Asked if Harris had suffered a setback, Mangini said, "(There are) just some things that we're doing, so he's a little bit of a longer shot" to play Sunday than last week.

Harris will be replaced by David Bowens, who made his first career start at inside linebacker last week. After blowing a coverage on the first play, Bowens settled down and finished with four tackles and a sack.

OMG, bless you. I would never have caught this. Wow, so now I have at DE Suggs, Bryan Thomas, and Bowens--three linebackers (two from the Jets, but oh well--I would never start them both, but at least this keeps them both off of someone else's roster!).Thanks again!

Well, I finally cut my number one IDP draft pick, David Harris. I traded for Willis and have been starting him and Stephen Cooper, but it still hurt.

*sniff*

David, I'll keep your locker open and a jersey waiting for you if you decide to start making tackles!

Barton's numbers have been solid lately, is that due to Harris being out? His numbers weren't bad when Harris was there, but they have gone up, has there been a change in their scheme to free him up more? I need to pick up a LB and Barton looks good and I like the matchup against the Pats this week.

Shoot looks good to me. He was waived a couple of weeks back and I decided to pick him up this week on a whim. Maybe he can go out with a bang for me the last qtr of the season. He upcomming schedule: BUF, @SEA, & MIA. Not sure how those matchups will be.......

Can anyone that saw the game give me some insight to those boxscore numbers? specifically I am wondering if the Niners attacked Harris thinking that he may still be gimpy and was he making his hay 4-6 yards downfield...OR....was he aggressive and attacking at the ball carriers?

I don't think there was anything specific in his play or the Niner gameplan that drove the numbers. I think it was as much related to the well above average number of tackle opportunities (63) the Jets faced than anything else.

what kind of fantasy impact will Harris have if the Jets hire Rex Ryan?
Would be interested in some Jets/Ravens homer info as well as the IDP braintrust. I'm curious to know if he'll be playing in the Ray Lewis or Bart Scott position and what kind of numbers we can realistically expect to see. paging Rovers, Reaper, OBX, Jene, Anthony, Aaron, Sig. Really curious to hear what you guys think of Harris going forward. TIA

I don't think I'd slot player for player here. I would guess that the guy who plays the LILB slot will have a little extra value since that would translate to the MLB spot in the 4-3 when Ryan uses it, but it's splitting hairs a bit. I think you want the better all-around player that plays every down. I'd think that Harris would remain in the top 20, in the pack of guys with mid-low LB1 upside.

Just curious with all the talks of lewis coming to the jets that how it will affect Harris's production and will he be moving from his inside spot. Jene can u shed any light on this ??

Unless the Jet defense is on the field all the time, aligning next to Lewis can't help Harris' potential. I think he'd definitely stay inside, it's debatable who'd play which role.

I'm pretty sure if Lewis came they'd move David Harris to the weakside. He's a very athletic linebacker with good speed, he'd probably flourish there. But I'm with the guy that posted previously, being next to Ray Lewis doesn't really help anybodies production.

Lewis isn't coming to New York but if he did then Harris would be the SILB. Harris is and always will be more thumper than chaser. Amazing what 2 games in 2007 can do for a guys rep.

Haven't been around here much... but I have little to add. I REALLY doubt Lewis signs with the Jets. HE's already mouthing off about how if they keep FAVre, he would call them. Sticky CAPS key... beer spill. I don't know if the Jets really want a 34 year old LB who thinks he knows how to run the personnel dept. Not to mention if they did keep Favre, they could never have enough $$$ to satisfy Lewis.

The JETS just released CB David Barrett. I think if ANY player from the Ravens follows Ryan, it will be Scott, not Lewis, and maybe Leonhard too. Lewis will cost too much. KEEP An eye on who the JETS draft. If they go CB in the first round, Ryan will run (or try to) that Bear 46 D scheme. Barrett besides being a cap casualty, is no cover corner. The Jets either go after Bodden (bad idea) or go CB in the first round. I think they gamble on Von Davis and hope they can make some adjustments on his mental approach to football and how to compete.

What role will a Harris/Scott combo do? Frankly, I haven't a clue. Can Ryan coach up Gholston at all? We know that neither B Thomas or Pace can cover as OLB's. Gholston is "Ryan's Hope" at this point. Ryan's biggest issue is to get better at the CB opposite Revis. I bet dollars to doughnuts that is his top priority. The 46 has to have 2 good man coverage CB's. They are on an island if the pressure isn't enough to get to opposing QB's.

Difficult if not impossible to project Jets IDP's at this point. New HC, DC, Doug Plank (the guy the 46 D was named after as a player) coaching the DB's and a new scheme. FA and the draft might help us all sort it out a little better.
