Wilson is still only 22 and will have just turned 23 when next season starts.

He is younger than most of this years Rookie RBs (Lacy, Ball, C.Michael, Ellington and teammate M.Cox, to name a few) and will likely be younger than quite a few of the 2014 rookie RBs.

Here are the youngest RBs in the NFL in age order (Wilson has the highest ypc and most tds per touch of the group)

That's next Thursday. Per the New York Daily News, Wilson will have a "fusion of the vertebrae" to repair his herniated disc. It's not unprecedented for an NFL running back, but is a serious operation. GM Jerry Reese has only said he expects Wilson to be ready for the "fall." He'll almost certainly miss the Giants' entire offseason program, and is highly questionable for training camp. Dynasty league owners can't count on having Wilson for Week 1.

Agreed. I can't see any positive other than that the poor guy - at least now - doesn't have to retire. From from a fantasy standpoint, even the most optimistic owner of Wilson has to be moving on from what could have been.

I wouldn't say I got lucky, one player was clearly more talented than another so I made the swap.

I tried dealing him for more but found no takers. Some dude drafted Patterson #6 overall so I sent the offer over 5 minutes later and got my guy.

I thought this was a really informative article on the issue. The article pertains to Finley but it's really pertinent to this type of injury. My take away from the article was that if you suffer from a spinal injury it's not a freak occurrence. Something is structurally wrong, the surgeon mentions 4 items that cause this and says that even if surgery was not recommended he'd be afraid it was because something was missed.

My interpretation of that is you have a spinal injury it means something is structurally wrong which means the only way you would likely ever have a chance to correct the issue and play again is if you actually have surgery. It's just not going to heal with time.

Maybe you can interpret this different or don't care for this guys medical opinion but I'm in the camp who actually thinks him getting surgery is a good thing in the sense it was his only way to try and return. I think Reese intimated as much a few weeks ago when he said he thought doctors could fix this if Wilson wanted to have the surgery. The "if he wants to" part indicates to me he was likely told surgery was not necessary to live a normal life outside the NFL but it was his only option if he wanted to return.

That's not logic. You are presenting a statement of fact on what Patterson was this year.

Many of us would call it illogical to assume that Patterson will never improve and what he was this year is simply what he is. By your method you would be have been calling Calvin Johnson nothing but a WR3 after his rookie year.

That's not logic. You are presenting a statement of fact on what Patterson was this year.

Many of us would call it illogical to assume that Patterson will never improve and what he was this year is simply what he is. By your method you would be have been calling Calvin Johnson nothing but a WR3 after his rookie year.

My logic and statement of fact is that Minnesota QBs suck monkey balls and will do so for the next 2-3 years. I like Patterson.

That's not logic. You are presenting a statement of fact on what Patterson was this year.

Many of us would call it illogical to assume that Patterson will never improve and what he was this year is simply what he is. By your method you would be have been calling Calvin Johnson nothing but a WR3 after his rookie year.

My logic and statement of fact is that Minnesota QBs suck monkey balls and will do so for the next 2-3 years. I like Patterson.

He did well this year and will likely do well next year. That does not mean I want him on my fantasy team. Excellent job of capturing all WRs of all time in your poor attempt at making a point. My advice is accurate. This is the worst football team in their division, who utilize a running offense with terrible QB play.

And you think Weeden, Hoyer, Campbell and Andy Dalton are among the best QBs in the league? First of all; a WR can have top production even when playing with a mediocre or bad QB. It's about target distribution. Second, the Vikings situation in 2014 is far from settled when it comes to coaching and QB, so in terms of system this seems like the perfect opportunity to be bullish on Patterson. His surroundings can only get better compared to 2013. And third, if there is a dynasty league where Patterson is not rostered it is a league that is not worth playing. He has clearly demonstrated that he has a very high ceiling and high risk / high ceiling players are always more interesting in dynasty than high floor / low ceiling players. Nobody is playing FF to be number 5 in the standings. Patterson was always going to be raw coming in and judging dynasty potential based on rookie production is the safest way to never be ahead of the curve.

Now...going back to the topic of this thread: the 2013 season has of course been a huge setback for Wilson. It hardly could have been worse considering the injury, his production when playing, and his fumbling issues which we all know is a biggie playing for Coughlin. However, his talent and ceiling is still very interesting, and given that the neck injury is a fact, surgery is a good thing since that means that he is trying to return. But of course; although the surgery is a positive it is still only a tiny bit of good news in what has been a devastating and potentially career ending season. With all that being said I would still argue that his ceiling is high and considering that he doesn't have any trade value at this point owners have little choice but to keep him rostered. For salary cap leagues I would wait as long as I can through the offseason but then get out if the penalty is not too big and one is in need of the roster or salary cap space. Who knows...some buzz about successful surgery...some buzz from training camp that he is looking very good...it doesn't really take that much for the media to turn again and before the preseason is over he could again have some value - at least in a trade to an owner who is sold on his high ceiling. Owners that are stuck with Wilson simply have to ride it out and see what happens. Things change fast in the NFL.

The source told Graziano there's "no reason to believe (Wilson) won't be playing" in 2014. Still just 22 years old, Wilson underwent "fusion of the vertebrae" to repair his herniated disc on January 16. The Giants are still likely to approach their offseason as if anything Wilson provides in 2014 will be a bonus. Re-signing free agent Andre Brown may be GM Jerry Reese's first order of business. Didn't Calvin have a good year with Drew Stanton and others throwing to him? And Fitzgerald in 2011 put up 1400 and 8 with Kolb and Skelton
