Davin Joseph, OG, Oklahoma (1 Viewer)

Jason Wood

Zoo York
Just listening to Davin Joseph on NFL Sirius Radio and the kid is impressive. Pat Kirwin is asking him about the strengths and weaknesses on a variety of DTs and Joseph is speaking with the clarity and even handedness of a football coach.

Considering the kid's measurables and his pedigree blocking at OU, I've got to believe he's going to be a 1st rounder, early 2nd rounder once teams have a chance to speak to him.

For those interested, here's a paraphrased version of his thoughts on various DTs...

Haloti Ngata, Oregon -- Quickest, most disruptive DT in this draft class. People underestimate his ability to get penetration
Brodrick Bunkley, FSU -- Strongest DT he's ever seen, potential to be the very best of this class but for now isn't a complete football player yet
Gabe Watson, Michigan -- Called him a "good" player with no discernible weaknesses but is also not "one of the best DTs in this draft."
Rod Wright, Texas -- Joseph is friends with Wright and they've been training together, so take his comments with a grain of salt. But he did say that reports re: Wright lacking passion are completely erroneous and Rod has perfect technique to be an impact player at the next level.

Cool, thanks for the info - this kind of stuff affects skill players and other IDPs, even if most FF leagues don't actually use OGs and DTs much.

Good stuff. I've had my eye on him hoping he might fall to Dallas at 49. From the sound of it, he won't make it there.

I decided to delete my post (which is still visible in wannabe's reply).

The sentiment remains, but I don't want to hijack Woodrow's thread. Apologies.

I did the same. Did Joseph mention anything about teammate Dvoracek? I would think Joseph would be able to compare him to the opponents in some way.

He did but I missed that part as someone called me just as he was getting to Dusty.

I doubt Joseph can crack the first round considering the depth at other positions and the quality at tackle. But I really like this guy. His media interview at the Combine was also impressive. He is the top athlete among guards in this draft.

He doesn't have the mass and power of Spencer and Jean-Gilles, but he very well could be the first guard chosen. Jean-Gilles is another guy who really impresses in interviews. Spencer has been a beast this whole post-season. Anyone of those three could go first, and all three will be very good players.

Also don't be surprised if Joseph ends up at tackle in the NFL. He is that athletic and has unusually long arms-- something sought in left tackles.

CC,do you feel that the 3 you mentioned have separated from Lutui, or he still in your top tier of guards. You just know I'm going to mention one other guard to watch - Rob Sims from OSU. He was the most impressive O-lineman at the shrine game, and like Joseph might have the ability to play tackle at the next level.

 I think the three I mentioned broke off a tier from Lutui. Right now I can't remember the negative I read on Lutui, but it influenced me some.

I like Sims in part due to your scouting, but mostly from watching him play. I think he's underrated in the conversation. It's a shame he's been struggling with a bad hammy this post-season. I think he would have had great measureables.

My "semi" final OL take from the blog

You'll appreciate my Sims comments.

I don't think Jean-Gilles is in the 1st round hunt any longer weighing in close to 360 last month
He carried it well. He's really athletic, and when he weighed in sans shirt he didn't look very flabby. He's huge. That said, I agree about the first round being unlikely. I feel that way about all the guards though. It's not like the WRs, where I think they lack in talent. It's just a deep draft to be grabbing a guard that early.

If he's quick and intelligent, I could see the Packers taking him in the second if he lasts that far.

How many o-linemen usually go in round 1? Right now it seems people only have Brick, Justice, McNeil, and sometimes Mangold.

Seems there should be at least 2 more linemen.

It's not simply about how many o-lineman as teams (rightfully) differentiate between interior lineman and tackles.Number of offensive guards drafted in Round 1, by year

2005 - 1
2004 - 1
2003 - 0
2002 - 1
2001 - 1
2000 - 0
1999 - 0
1998 - 1
1997 - 2
1996 - 3

It varies. The most in the last 15 years is 8. The least is 2. 4 or 5 is average. There's 7 or 8 with round 1 grades this year, but the depth elsewhere will drive the number down to the average of 4 or 5. It's a great year to draft OL in the second and third.

Coyle puts Joseph at OG2, but with the same numerical rating as Jean-Gilles, then a big dropoff after those two. He puts Joseph in the second round.
