Deadly quake rocks Taiwan (1 Viewer)

Jolted awake in my apartment here in northern Taiwan at 4a.m. by a long, powerful quake...knew immediately that it must be a huge one, as the shaking lasted over a minute. Was hoping the epicenter would be way out in the ocean somewhere, but not only did it hit inland, but it was very shallow. Buildings have collapsed. Death toll will climb. I have many friends and students in the south, still waiting for a number of them to check in safely. :(

We are very far from the epicenter so perfectly fine..only wish I was closer so I could help with the rescue effort. Just a terrible calamity for a lot of families, though, at what should be the happiest time of the year for them (start of Chinese New Year festivities) :(

Yikes. I have friends and colleagues there and have visited multiple times.
