Deadspin paid off somebody for their hall of fame vote (1 Viewer)

I love this. Also love that Bill Maddon called it "one of the most despicable things I can ever think of"

this won't end well
why?
Well, the integrity of the process is shaken a bit if votes are being sold the highest bidder. That's cute when Deadspin does it to prove a point, but it is a long-term problem for the HOF that will have to be addressed.

How is selling a vote really any worse than the favor votes given by writers, or votes given because a writer personally likes a player?

as a one-off, more humorous than problematic. but if it were widespread, opens possibility for a wealthy player (or supporter) to fund a HOF campaign.

I think there would be a backlash if this was seen as being too overt. Jack Morris (and Blyleven) have been the most active self-promoters I can recall. Pete Rose is in a separate category.
