Dean Smith passes away (1 Viewer)

Damn, he was a class act. I grew up and went to college in NC. I watched Carolina as much for him as any of the players.

Sad day for fans of the game regardless of who we cheer for.

His impact on the game was rarely matched, as was his class.

Wow. How old was he? Great coach and person. RIP.
He was 83. It also hits home for me because my mom is battling Alzheimer's Disease as well. This really does suck...
I'm sorry, Grady. My father had it and died last summer.

As a Maryland fan - God, I hated that man. He could've beaten a Lefty-coached team with walk-ons when Lefty had 5 AAs. Never seen a better gameplanner than Coach Smith.

Rest in Peace Mr. Smith

He went to scout Pat Sullivan, a 2nd team all-american and their team was sooo much better than us. After the tip, Pat was guarding me. I was shocked, 6-7 guy guarding the point guard. I was frozen for a second or so, coach yells "take him!" and...I did. For at least 70% of the game, our offense was them clearing out for me. I had many points, he had many blocks. We still lost by a ton, our tallest was 6-3 and they also had a 6-8 guy and scored oh so easily. I had to cover there excellent point guard and that was a chore in and of itself. I had noticed him in the stands and thought he looked familiar and wondered if he was a relative. I could not place him but there was something familiar. After the game, he said great game (inside I was ohhhh Dean Smith!) and shook my hand.

A couple years later, I went to check out Pat's younger brother and everything was true-he shot like 90% from 3 and it was ridiculous how fast he could rack up points. Dean sat next to me in the stands and mid-game was maybe you should be covering him out there. I couldn't believe he remembered me.

Then I asked how come Pat was just a utility guy and rarely asked to score or anything at UNC. I got a wonderful speech about doing anything to contribute and also accepting roles.

My uncle is coach of Miami U and my cousin is an assistant on the Celtics. Back then my uncle was at Virginia. He asked what I thought of Ryan and I said he can't play D and isn't a good dribbler. He asked if that's what my uncle said. I was blown away. Different last names how'd he know? He said he looked me up after that game against Pat and asked what my uncle thought of Ryan. I said we don't discuss that stuff and he asked if I wish we did. I said of course but he's a million miles away and all. Then he asked what I thought of this player, he said what he thought and we spent the rest of the game critiquing players. I had a great time and will never forget it.

OMG I got told great game by Dean Smith was a big moment, but his speech about doing anything to contribute has been something I've thought of many times as an adult. It always made me wonder if he could give me such awesome advice in just a few minutes, imagine what his players glean from him playing for him for years.

Great story.

RIP Coach.

RIP - Never like the 4 corners crap he pulled (bad for basketball fans), but he was very smart in how he ran it. Probably should have won more than 2 titles, but he was surly a great coach and from what I hear, a very good man.
