DeAngelo in the TB game (1 Viewer)

Hey I missed watching the game Monday nite and I dont see the FBG recap for it. So I looked through the play-by-play over at NFL.com and the logs have me wondering about DeAngelo and the way he was used. My buddy who also owns DeAngelo is all pumped on him for this week going into the Denver game after his great game last week. He was telling me DeAngelo is the goal line back and Stewart just gets the scaps there and not worry about Smith's big game.

The NFL logs though show it differently. It looked like the 2 backs where alternating series then Stewart came in on the 3rd series and gets 3 of 4 red zone carries for the TD. At the end of the 3rd same sequence Stewart gets 3 of the 4 red zone touches for another score. With 11 minutes left in the game Stewart has 2 tds and DeAngelo 0 tds also Stewart is leading in yardage.

Just looking at the stat line for DeAngelo (186 yds 2 tds) I wouldnt have imagined the game unfolded this way. I havent seen Carolina play this year but briefly so hopefully this is the norm for them also I was kinda of glad to see DelHomme's 2 ints though :goodposting:

You're overthinking this. Deangelo is the #1 RB in FF over the last 6 weeks, regardless of how he's been used.

The backs were alternating series. For a while it even looked like situations were slanted a bit toward Stewart. Williams made the most of his opportunities (as he has all year) including at the end of the game. Of course it all turned out ok but for a while there it was certainly a split.

Don't try to typecast Williams or Stewart, just know that there is a 1a and a 1b, with Williams getting more carries lately, mainly because he's been running so well. I also don't think that there is a goal-line rob as mentioned here. Both have had goal line carries in recent weeks. I think that may have bee the case early in the year, but it seems like Fox has complete confidence in Williams inside the 10.

I'd also say it's a complete overstatement to say that Stewart just gets the scraps. He has a big role in the offense other than just spelling DeAngelo. Remember, your buddy is viewing DeAngelo through some heavily tinted own-the-player glasses

This is why it's so important to actually see the games versus trying to interpret a box score. I know sometimes it's impossible, but be careful about what the numbers say.

What's also interesting is that last week against the Packers, DeAngelo was a HUGE recipient of Steve Smith stopping a yard short of the endzone on long passes. As I've heard on this site before, if you're a Smith owner, sometimes it's better not to know.

Thanks for some real analysis. Some of us own Jon Stewart and are wondering if he's a viable play and not just a goalline back. If both guys are getting 11-15 carries and alternating series, then both are viable plays, I think. I am assuming the GB stat line would have been similiar to TB if Stewart hadn't pulled his hammy/cramped up/whatever. It seems like they are doing about what TEN does.

I agree, but you have to have seen or looked at details of the GB game to know 'why' he got the 4 short TDs. It probably won't happen again. They'll probably try to split it up if both backs are healthy. The question is, if CAR rests players, which of these guys rests, or do they continue to split?

They'll continue to split carries, especially if healthy. Stewart has some minor bumps this year which probably added to DeAngelo's opportunities. Thing is, Fox isn't thinking like a FF owner - he's got two viable RB options that he can use in his offense, and he's not worried about who gets the TDs.And there very well may come a time in the next three games where Stewart gets 2 TDs and DeAngelo none and the FF world will be screaming at Fox and DeAngelo. Still look for both to get 10-20 rushes per game, depending on the nature of the game (playing comeback or with a lead).

Why would Carolina rest players? They're playing for #1 seed now, and control their own destiny. Even if they lose to NYG, they'll be playing for a bye in Week 1 of the playoffs.

A win again ov said:
I'm thinking about playing Stewart this week at Flex over Addai or even RB 2 over Lynch, Not sure though.
I am also thinking about starting him as well, over Portis (injury concerns) and Pierre Thomas (tough matchup at chicago). Do you guys think we will see a similar approach to using Deangelo and JStew this week at Denver?
