The relevant portion is a bit from Carolina Panthers offensive coordinator Dan Henning:

Henning, 63, said fans shouldn't be concerned that first-round pick DeAngelo Williams, a running back from Memphis, is only 5-foot-9.

"He's not small; he's short," said Henning. "He looks like Mighty Mouse."

Henning said Williams was the running back the Panthers most wanted in the draft. He said team officials favored him over Minnesota's Lawrence Maroney, who was chosen by New England six spots before Carolina picked, and Southern California's Lendale White, a second-round pick by Tennessee.

"This was the guy we were after," Henning said. "We have an unusual individual here in DeAngelo because he's the fourth-leading rusher in the history of the NCAA. Now, you've got to do a lot of running (to do that).

"He's a bright-eyed guy. He's got flash and quickness."

• Henning said general manager Marty Hurney was "adamant" that the Panthers draft a running back to pair with Deshaun Foster, who has dazzled at times but has had injury problems.

"We all love Deshaun Foster, but Deshaun Foster has not been able to fulfill a whole year for us," said Henning.

As for Eric Shelton, the Panthers' 2005 second-round pick who spent his rookie season on injured reserve, Henning said the team still hopes he can fit into the rotation as a short-yardage, goal-line back. He said Shelton also could be used to pound the ball at the defense at the end of games.

My questions are:

1. What does he mean by "pair" with Foster?

2. What could Shelton's role as short-yardage/goal-line back do to DeAngelo's production?

3. Does New England have a player of Shelton's ilk that could steal TD's from Dillon/Moroney?

1. RBBC2. If Shelton works really hard (unlikely considering last year) this season, he could steal TDs and such. I do expect Deangelo to fully take over the whole job within 3 years.

3. No. Dillon is going to be the TD stealing guy (24 TDs over 2 seasons of work, and injured last season). Maroney should be the yardage guy, and Dillon should be the short yardage/TD guy (although Dillon was quite pathetic in short yardage other than the goaline last season). I also expect Maroney to have the full job within 3 seasons.

I really don't think Eric Shelton is ever going to be worth squat. He has to say nice things about the guy though. I agree with Carolina that Williams is better than Maroney.

Shelton was "nothing" last year and as said above he was "lazy". He could very well have "eaten crow" and be in better shape with a better attitude this year. Stranger things have happenned. BTW I'm not a fan.

To Q #2. If Deshaun and Deangelo are paired AND Shelton is the short yardage back I'd figure that means Deangelo will have a low TD total in 06.

It's a RBBC this year but if DeShaun gets hurt it's over for him. If he does well he goes for a draft pick next year. This looks like a one year RBBC if that. I would bank on DeAngelo being the guy 5th game on.
