Deep NL-only Leagues (1 Viewer)

typical advice threads on specific players/trades/waivers have limited value because of the wide variety of league formats. so i thought i'd give this a shot. a thread for players in leagues to go deep into the NL. My league, for example, is 5x5 roto with 12 teams, 14 batters & 11 pitchers (75% depth). Let's see how this works.

Our waiver pickups today included guys like Jorge Sosa, Wes Obermueller, Justin Germano, and Anthony Lerew. If you're in a league where you'd like to discuss the relative merits of guys like this, or you need to know whether to pick up someone like Ryan Ludwick, then this thread is for you.

Ask (or advise) away.

P.S. I picked up Germano and Sosa. Plus, took flyers on Hennesey & Saul Rivera, who might steal a save or three soon.

I picked up Hennesy last week (as a Benitez owner). Stay away from Sosa. He is a tease much like Brett Tomko. As soon as you think you got something he gets you. I owned Sosa two of the last 3 years. The first year as a pickup and he did well so I kept him for a buck last year. It got ugly real quick.

I mentioned him in the Dodgers thread cause I don't know their plans to bring him up, but if/when Kuo comes back (he's pitching to build stamina and coming off a shoulder strain in AAA) and replaces Tomko in the Dodgers rotation, he could be a nice cheap add, especially for K's. In his starts to end the year last year he K'ed 35 in 29.1 IP. With an ERA just above 3. The Ks have been there again in his rehab stints.

Here is a list of guys that were FAABs in my deep 10 team (23 man lineup, 17 man bench including free agents and minor leaguers in reserve draft major leaguers FAAB only):

Obermueller, Wes (FLA, RP/SP)

Thompson, Brad (STL, RP)

Ludwick, Ryan (STL, CF/RF)

Villarreal, Oscar (ATL, RP)

Sosa, Jorge (NYM, RP/SP)

Pena, Tony (ARI, RP)

Lerew, Anthony (ATL, RP/SP)

Hennessey, Brad (SF, SP)

None of those guys are available in my league. I had Sosa a couple of weeks ago thinking he might replace Pelfrey, but I ended up dropping him to pick up Damion Easley.I think out of the group you listed, Sosa is the best bet. He may well be a tease, but he was pitching very well at AAA and could put up wins with the Mets. Even when El Duque comes back, Sosa could stay if Pelfrey doesn't turn it around pronto. Obermueller is a gas can. Germano is pedestrian. Lerew is a good bet to get lit up his next start. My biggest question right now is whether to keep Aaron Boone as my utility man or turn back to Ronnie Belliard (hoping for some 1B time or a trade) or Kevin Frandsen. The waiver wire is not appetizing.I like the Hong Chi Kuo suggestion, but Tomko is pitching very well this year. If he or Hendrickson start to stumble, I might consider adding Hoochie Koo, but I don't want to waste the roster spot and then have to drop him...leading someone else to pick him up knowing that I like him.

I've picked up Hennessey just because he was the last closer backup not taken, and who knows what happens with Benitez.

I picked up Sosa to give him a trial start; given the few IP eaters left in our league, it was him or Shawn Chacon.

i'd prefer Belliard, for the reason you mention. It's frustrating, isn't it though, waiting for a MLB GM to do what you believe is the right thing.

i think this is a good tip. If you have a reserve spot available, and can pick up DL guys, i'd do it. I actually bought Kuo at auction this year for a buck, and have him stashed away on my reserves. Some other posts have debated Jorge Sosa. Normally, he's the sort of SP i'd avoid, but i heard the reports of his development of a new pitch, and sometimes that can be a nice tipping point to value. Again, i have the ability to stash away a guy like this, which is a luxury some leagues may not offer. Germano's stats look like a Jon Lieber - extremely low walk rates with a moderate K rate, leading to an excellent K/BB ratio. That typically bodes well for a pitcher. He certainly looked good Tuesday night against the Braves.

I read today (and Redman commented on this in the Dodgers thread) that he may be brought up soon, but it will probably be in a long relief role, even though he was more effective as a starter. Tomko had a good outing recently and they want to groom Billingsley to get back to a starter role. And Schmidt will eventually be back. So Kuo has some obstacles for sure if he is to get back in the rotation. And in my league, we can't DL him and stash him cause he's off the DL now, just pitching in AAA. Good info on Sosa though, thanks.

You have to pick up Tony Pena and possibly Hennessey if you are short on saves. Got to love deep leagues, my NL league is 10 team 27 roster, 19 bench with the same Free Agent Rules.

Question of the week: who is Mark Reynolds (filling in as Arizona's 3B) and how much FAAB is he worth?

And, rank these OFs, by expected value this season:

- Norris Hopper, CIN

- Reggie Abercrombie, FLA

- Angel Pagan, CHI

Norris Hopper = zero value. He isn't that good, and he's not going to play a whole lot. Hamilton has been out sick for a few days, and Encarnacion is wasting away hitting .400 at Louisville. Hopper won't be a regular in the lineup.Abercrombie = zero value. He's terrible and has been forever.Pagan = slight value at best. Cubs outfield is crowded, but if Pagan stays hot he could force his way into the lineup. I just don't expect the production to continue for very long.I would go for Reynolds over all of these guys. Last I heard, he was being groomed as the D-Backs long-term jack of all trades. If Callaspo doesn't start to hit, I think Reynolds could steal his playing time. Additionally, we don't know how long Tracy will be out. Reynolds is at least worth using in the meantime.I don't use FAAB, so I don't know much he's worth. I wouldn't spend a ton, but I like Reynolds out of the ones you mentioned.

I'm not sure how deep your leagues are, but Saarloos is making his first start in the Reds rotation tonight. I think he will be a solid stop gap and plays the Nationals and Pirates this week at home (where he has been solid out of the pen this year). He might even stay in the rotation.

Might be worth a shot depending on your options.
