DEEP RB options (1 Viewer)

With Fred Taylor hurt, and Larry Johnson sucking it up, what are the chances that BenJarvus Green-Ellis and Kolby Smith could make a FF impact this year?

This question is obviously only for DEEP leagues, but in some leagues, there aren't more viable guys available. Picking up a guy like these two, who could have some FF value, could be huge.

NE-Taylor's hurt, Maroney doesn't seem to be the answer. I know that Morris and Faulk are ahead of him, but an injury to one guy could give BJG-E a shot.

In KC, LJ seems to be done. Charles hasn't really impressed much either. With Smith able to come off the PUP next week, he could have the opportunity to get some carries.

What say the Shark Pool?

I think the law firm (BJGE) has a shot if Morris gets hurt . . . form what I've read the locals love him . . .

I am sure the regular Patriots posters will chime in soon . . .

I'm a Pats fan, and I know that the Pats apparently loved BJGE enough to deactivate him for three of the first four games. That's not a good sign. He only made an impact last year when everybody else was hurt and the Pats had nowhere else to turn. I think it would take the same for him to have a big impact this season. If Morris goes down BJGE would likely split carries with Maroney, with Faulk remaining in his third down role. I just don't see enough of an impact for BJGE with that set-up.

Is Fred going to be back any time soon? I see him being dropped in a lot of leagues and there was some early thoughts he may be out for the year but he would seem like a classic runner for them come fantasy playoff time.

Michael Lombardi on the BS Report podcast yesterday said that Maroney almost got Brady killed last week w/ terrible blitz pickup and he wouldn't be surprised if Maroney started being inactive. if Maroney were inactive, have to think it's BJGE time.

But wouldn't that be more due to the fact that he was down the depth chart? They had Taylor and Maroney active, right. Were both Morris and Faulk active for those games? How likely would it be for NE to keep 5 tailbacks on their active roster? Now, with Taylor injured, Morris and Maroney are sharing time. Wouldn't BJGE be in line to take over if one of those 2 should get hurt?

Thanks for your insight. The bolded from the 2nd quote is what you would need to make this player worthwhile, though. We're talking about a 4th/5th string RB. He's had one injury, one more could give him more of a role. Like I said, this wouldn't be relevant for a 10 team league, with 15 man rosters. In a 16 team league (or larger) this kind of deep "stashing" of a RB may prove useful in the future. With that many players rostered, waiting until he gets a chance is put up some stats is going to be too late.

You might be better off grabbing Bernard Scott (CIN) instead of BJGE or Smith. BJBE will need a lot of iother players to get injured for him to make an impact, and Smith might not make an impact even given the opportunity with how woeful the Chiefs are. If Benson goes down in Cincinnatti, though, the Bengals have proven that they can run the ball and they'll give nearly all the carries to one back. May be worth a roll of the dice.

Taylor may come back in the regular season, but I'm not sure he would be 100% given that he had fairly invasive surgery on his ankle to reattach ligaments. I'm guessing that he will be hampered if/when he comes back and he could still end up on IR if they don't want to waste a roster spot and if they think he won't help them.

Of course, people that listened to me all along would already have Morris rostered and in their lineup. I'm mostly kidding, as the Pats RB situation has been and will continue to be a mess and Morris has a long way to go to stay healthy.

BJGE is Morris' backup and the two have similar running styles. Morris would have to get hurt before BJGE would see a fair amount of work. He's not a terrible stash if you have the roster space and wnat to wait and see who else will get hurt in the Pats backfield. The odds are still pretty high that one of Maroney/Morris/Faulk will get dinged up along the way somewhere.

Maroney is always a wild card, as he on occasion has looked fantastic but usually looks somewhat timid. He should stay in the mix and may see a bigger workload depending upon the opponent. If he's on the waiver wire, I'd take him over BJGE but I still wouldn't say that the immediate ROI will be there. Things can change pretty quickly, so any of these guys would make for decent fantasy depth.

While there are certainly the possability of starting RBs over the 30 getting hurt, neither BGE nor Smith is guaranteed to start should Morris or LJ (who is definately not done btw) get hurt. I think its unlikely BGE would start though he's likely become a part of a 3 way committee. BGE's best hope would be for two more NE backs to go down which is entirely possible. Smith vs Charles is harder to decipher. Smith hasnt been healthy in a while. Smith is a better interior running option but that's obviously not working for KC right now. While I dont expect KC to go to the offense that they used last year with Thigpen, they might be better off going to more of a passing attack until they fix their run blocking. Long term, Smith seems much more likely to get a serious look than BGE. The Chiefs are a rebuilding team and could choose to trade or cut LJ in the next couple years. The Pats on the other hand will likely continue to load up with more vets while Brady is still in his prime years.
