Defensive player: Speaker in helmet? (1 Viewer)

The NFL is looking into having one defensive player having direct communication with the coaches next season, similar to the setup that QBs have.

If this rule change passes, which defensive player on your favorite team would you like to have this device and why?

For the Pats, I'd probably choose Tedy Bruschi. He calls the defensive plays and has the most options to audible as well as having multiple defensive responsibilities as a LB.

What say you?

I say the refs should have one in their cap so that someone can be in constant communication with them while they are huddling to get a play called correctly

Give it to Kenny Walker.

I think a Linebacker should have it because they are right in the middle and can communicate with everyone easiest. For the Redskins it would have to be Marcus Washington.

For the Packers it should be in Carroll's helmut. A coachcould constantly be yelling at him to not grab the reciever after five yards. This would save the Packers about 1000 yards in penalties next year.

Marshall would probably get it for the skins, he makes all of the Defensive calls on the field

As a general rule, I'd think the MLB would get it, unless you have a veteran Safety like Dawkins, Roy, or with the Chiefs, Sammy Knight.

For the Lions... I don't think Lehman is the guy, maybe Kennedy? I really don't know here, maybe that's the problem, they don't have a leader on defense.

ETA: would anyone give it to a DE/DT? Even with the Giants (Strahan) or other teams with a DE as their leader, I can't imagine giving it to someone on the line.

Seattle - Lofa Tatupu

I rather this rule didn't go into effect because I think it gives Seattle an edge because they have Lofa directing the defense.

Here is the list because they are all tuned in to what the play is:

Cornelius Griffin

Joe Salave'a

PhillipsDaniels

Andre Carter

Marcus Washington

Lemar Marshall

Carlos Rogers

Shawn Springs

Adam Archuleta

Sean Taylor

and whoever plays the other LB spot

It's a fun question to think of abstractly but let's face it, the player on defense that calls the Defensive Formations would always get it.

:goodposting: The MLB in that defense is responsible for the play calls and the defensive audibles and adjustments.

Whoever it is that calls the defensive plays. I think those duties fall upon newly signed Clark for the Steelers.

Bruschi, no question.

I hope this doesn't go into effect. Bruschi and Harrison are like coaches on the field as it is.

For the Pack - MLB Nick Barnett - all though it is tempting to put it in Ahmad's helmet to remind him to NOT GRAB AT RECEIVERS!

It would go to the Defensive captain who calls the Defensive sets and plays.

Usually this is an Inside or Middle linebacker. Might occationally be a Strong Safty who has the duties (Polamalu?), but I can't confirm that. Zack calls the D in Miami. I'm pretty sure Farrior calls the D for Pitt.

It is usually the FS that calls the defensive plays for the Steelers. Last year it was Chris Hope so I expect this year it will be Ryan Clark.

That's what I was thinking, doesn't this help the teams without good veteran leadership more than those that have it?Seems to me this rule should be pushed by Seattle more than almost any other team. Lofa is a very promising young player, but doesn't have the experience yet.

Correct. Trotter

That's true. Do defensive audibles always get called by the same person? Or is that strictly the domain of the defensive signal caller?
