ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Top Tampa Bay prospect Delmon Young was suspended 50 games without pay by the International League on Tuesday, two weeks after throwing a bat that hit a replacement umpire in the arm.

Randy Mobley, President of the International League, said that the suspension, retroactive to April 27, is the longest known penalty in the 123-year history of the International League, according to the information uncovered during the investigation. The reprimand also includes a minimum of 50 hours of community service. Young earns $500,000, making the suspension cost him approximately $145,000 in salary. Mobley said he looked at precedents established in baseball, and in other sports.

Immediately after Young threw the bat, he retreated to the clubhouse and phoned Devil Rays general manager Andrew Friedman to tell him what happened, and Mobley told ESPN The Magazine's Buster Olney that Young's cooperation with his investigation "could not have been better.... He knew right from the start that he had messed up big-time, and his attitude continued to be that all along." Young was very interested in including the community service aspect of his penalty all along, Mobley said.

"The Tampa Bay Devil Rays fully support the decision," the team said in a statement. "As stated before, we do not tolerate this type of conduct from anyone in the Devil Rays' organization."

In his investigation, Mobley said he could not determine, with absolute certainty, that Young had intended to hit the umpire when he threw the bat.

"If I had, I would have suspended him for the entire season," Mobley told Olney. "He explained to me that it was his intent to throw his bat and throw his helmet back toward to the plate to show his disgust with the call, as we've seen in other situations, and there was a miscalculation.

"My goal was to arrive at something fair and just, and I feel comfortable that we've done that."

The 20-year-old Young, brother of Detroit star Dmitri Young and considered one of the best players in the minors, was ejected in the first inning following a called third strike in the Durham Bulls' Triple-A game at Pawtucket, R.I., on April 26.

When Young took his time leaving the batter's box, the umpire tossed him. Young then flipped his bat underhand and it sailed end over end, striking the umpire. The umpire, whose name was not released, did not appear injured and remained in the game.

"I sincerely regret my actions in the game yesterday," Young said in a statement in April released by the office of his agent, Arn Tellem. "Regrettably, in the heat of the competition my emotions got the better of me.

"My behavior was completely unacceptable. I want everyone to know that I recognize that it is never right to throw a bat and I certainly never intended for the bat to make contact with the umpire. Nevertheless, I owe an apology to my team, the fans and most importantly to the umpire, for the incident. I am sorry."

In Double-A ball last year, Young was suspended for three games by the Southern League for bumping the chest of plate umpire Jeff Latter.

Regular minor league umpires are on strike this season. Fill-ins umps -- most of them with college or high school experience -- have been working in their place. Minor league teams are not releasing the names of the replacements.

"It's an unfortunate incident and there should be no place for actions like that in the game of baseball," the umpire said in a statement released by Pawtucket. "Any official should not be treated like that. He embarrassed himself and his teammates."

They really needed to end the press release with "the next MFer that hits an ump with a bat gets a full season off".

50 is ok I guess, but it's the star treatment for sure. If it had been some average player he would have gotten a much lengthier vacation.

For as much of a jag as this guy is, I'm going to defend him on the recent point he made in this article:

In a USA Today article, top prospect Delmon Young questioned why he, B.J. Upton and Elijah Dukes have not yet been called up. "They're what, 30 games out of first place?" Young said. "They think we're going to mess up their clubhouse chemistry. B.J. should be up there. What are they waiting for? They always have excuses." Young then said he was just venting and "we're just employees here." ... Young, after two homers Wednesday, is hitting .346
Good grief man, is squeezing 6 months of arbitration eligibility out of your core worth all the bad blood it creates? Shouldn't one of these guys be taking swings vs major leaguers?

They each have had their share of trouble this season.

Young was suspended 50 games for throwing a bat at an umpire in April.

Dukes, 22, twice was suspended for a week after confrontations with teammates and coaches, and was benched for a game last week after confronting Durham manager John Tamargo in the dugout.

Upton, 21, was arrested and charged with driving under the influence last month in North Carolina.

All of that, followed by the appearance of the article on Friday, seemed to strike the last nerve with Maddon and Friedman.

"It's pretty clear how they feel," Friedman said. "I think it shows a lot of disrespect toward the game and the achievement of becoming a major-league player. The whole article is something we take great exception to."

"I don't know what qualifies people, at any age, to disrespect anybody in the manner that that article indicated to me," Maddon said. "It speaks to disrespect, and it speaks to the sense of entitlement that the athletes seem to have today and I totally disagree with."

:goodposting: GD, I'm so sick of these guys. Honestly, if they could move Delmon and Elijah for some pitching I wouldn't be upset at all. It's unbelievable how spoiled these jerkoffs are.

Left fielder Carl Crawford just shook his head when asked about the article. "To be honest with you, when I saw that I was just speechless," Crawford said. "Maybe they think that's how they need to act. I don't know why. I haven't set that kind of example. Other players around here haven't set that kind of example. So I don't know why they're even acting like that."
GB Carl. He's the face of this sorry franchise. The rest of these tools can eat it.

From a talent standpoint I think they're spot on.

They're just lacking character (and in Upton's case defense). If they think they have it so bad as top prospects in the minors, play so well that you don't give the club any other choice.

Upton: .270/.374/.398, 8 HR, 41 RBI, 70 R, 44 SB/17 CS

Young: .348/.369/.525, 6 HR, 43 RBI, 36 R, 18 SB/3 CS

Dukes: .293/.401/.488, 10 HR, 50 RBI, 58 R, 9 SB/4 CS

All solid numbers, but when coupled with their off the field issues and attitude problems not enough to warrant a promotion yet.

So nobody sees Young and Upton's point of view? Well, besides them of course.
Of course they (specifically Upton) have a beef with not being up. But you never call out your organization like they did.

btw, Rays 17, Yankees 5

More importantly, Wiggington broke his hand... will Upton get the call?????
Well, one would assume. I guess Zobist could get the call, if they really feel like pissing off/punishing BJ.I would bet Upton gets the call though.

I would bet Upton gets the call though.
Knowing the history of this organization, they'll start Sean Burroughs the rest of the season. And if he fails, then they'll sign Tony Batista.

And if he fails, they'll reacquire Jared Sandberg.

And if HE fails, they'll convince Wade Boggs to come out of retirement.

Because god forbid they start the arbitration cycle with someone with actual talent.

Edit: Hey, Vinny Castilla is a free agent. If Namoli was still running things, he'd be in a D-Ray uniform this time tomorrow.

You keep saying this, and I've proven you time and time to be incorrect on it. Why do you keep going back to the same well?

I can understand the frustration. I don't think the article was really that bad. Hell, Young even said that he was just talking out of frustration. They're hungry. I don't fault them for it and neither should the front office.

I was being sarcastic. It just seems that the D-Rays are unwilling to let their talented non-pitching prospects get a crack at the big leagues for the simple purpose of saving a few bucks. If Upton is actually called up, I'll believe it when I see it and I'll be finally convinced that the organization has taken a turn for the better. Until then, I'll have my doubts.

:hifive: this worked out well.Man it's amazing to think about how different this franchise is 6 years later. Holy crap.

You dead, dog.
He just got arrested again. He has like 19 kids now or something.
That guy had a lot of talent, more than Delmon by a longshot IMO. But that guy was fatally flawed by birth, Delmon is just off like the rest of his family. I think he's more of a danger to himself than he is to others, but he hasn't learned from his mistakes. Really think it's a substance abuse problem, something he might be able to fix before he self-destructs.

And I've said all along that I wasn't a fan and I wasn't all that excited they brought him back. However, I think right now he deserves another shot as a person and I would not feel right if the Tigers cut him lose like they did Dimitri. But one more thing, even something small, and you have to designate him for assignment and wash your hands of him. But give him one more chance to redeem himself, I don't think these Youngs are bad guys at all. They just suffer from an affliction that impacts a lot of people in all walks of life, but Delmon has to understand that because he makes $6mm a year and plays baseball for a living...that he is held to a higher standard. Maybe he'll turn it around, maybe he won't.

Yea I really thought Elijah was going to be a monster for many years. A totally bat#### monster, but still. He was just never mentally able to put it all together. Just had tons of talent though. He's practically homeless now from what I've read. No chance at life now.

I know some really good people that did real stupid things when they were intoxicated. What you do when you are totally trashed should not defeine you as a person. It seems that Young does have some substance abuse issues he needs to deal with.
