Delta Airlines Travel Question (1 Viewer)

Traveling from DC to Tokyo in March and looking to pull the trigger on tickets soon.

A friend recommended All Nippon Airways and to upgrade to “Premium Economy” which gives you a nicer and wider seat and more leg room.

I also saw a fight on Delta and priced out their “Premium Economy” and it’s about $600 cheaper per ticket than All Nippon Airways. I’ll be purchasing two tickets so total savings is about $1200.

Has anyone flown Delta and used Premium Economy? What is your opinion on the comfort of the seats and the “extras” like entertainment and dining?

The other thing is All Nippon would be a direct flight for me there and back to Dulles. Delta would be a connection both there and back and I would have to travel to and from Baltimore which is less convenient.

But $1200 in savings?!

All thoughts and opinions are appreciated!

I recommend reading the info on Premium Economy on Delta's website.
Back in November, I flew Premium Economy to/from LA and Hong Kong/Singapore. But it was on United.
The main difference was an extra 6 inches of legroom, which surprisingly made a difference. The seats were also closer to the front of the plane and the restrooms.
For that really long flight, it was worth it for me (extra $200 each way).

I’ve not flown Delta premium economy, but ANA and the other major Japanese carrier, JAL, are great. Best food I’ve ever had on a flight, and less cramped than regular seats on domestic airlines. Their standards for flight attendants are also top notch.

Full disclosure: I may have a thing for Asian women.

As a general rule, I found non-American airlines to be nicer. But no way would I fork out $600 more per ticket, for the same flight.

I’m Delta Diamond and Million Miler, so I know Delta’s products well, but they don’t have anything called “Premium Economy.” They do have “Premium Select” on most international flights, which is one step below first class - is that what you’re referring to? If you’re looking at it somewhere other than directly on Delta’s site, they could be labeling it differently and actually mean Delta’s Comfort+, so I want to be sure which class of service you’re actually talking about.

Yes, that is it. Premium Economy.

As a person that's done plenty of long haul flights across the Pacific and Atlantic, I would not pay $600 more for the JAL seats. Delta Comfort+ will be fine. It's not biz class, and the extra leg room is helpful. You'll all get to the same place eventually.

Premium Select? Or Comfort+?

Anyway, Premium Select (if that’s what you’re looking at) is a good option. The seats have a good footrest but don’t lie flat, but they recline really far, so far that I’d advise taking the bulkhead if available, which I wouldn’t normally do. Since you specifically asked about amenities...you get the same meals as first class and can choose in advance, so definitely a big step up in food. I believe you also get one or two checked bags for free, if that matters. Delta’s IFE is excellent on most plane types, too.

ETA: Forgot - you also get the good amenity kit, blanket, pillow, and headphones.
ETA2: Just realized you said you are buying two tix. With two of you, I don't think you need to target the bulkhead. The issue with the later rows is that the seats recline so far that it's particularly hard for the window seat person to get in and out, which isn't great if you're sharing with a stranger. If it's two of you together, you can manage that better.

I've shelled out for this on international flights, purely for the legroom. I'm not super-tall (6'2"), but I'm tall enough that it's worth it to be able to stretch my legs. I don't really care about any of the other amenities.

Premium Select. I have looked at several airlines and got the terms mixed up. I went back and looked at the delta option.

i’m not a diamond, but i fly delta exclusively and have been doing long haul to italy obviously. i know you are flying west first, returning east. i dont know if there is an overnight segment or not. i say this because delta makes it easy to select different classes of cabin coming and going, so to speak. on the long haul, they basically offer 4 classes. main, comfort+, premium and then delta one (1st). i’ve flown them all. i just flew premium from italy to the states. in premium, you get first class food options, but not the bathrooms in first. you get a small kit with eye mask and toothbrush. the premium cabin on my flight was 3 rows, so it nice and quiet. the seats are a drop bigger than comfort, but not enough that you will notice and it doesn’t make it any easier to sleep. entertainment console seems the same in all cabins. basically, IMO, premium is not enough of a step up from comfort to be worth a significant spend. comfort is worth it from main, because the cabin is quieter and the seats are bigger. what we have done, IF the cost is reasonable, is fly delta one to italy, because it is an overnight flight and the lay flat helps us sleep. we come back to the U.S. in comfort. i took premium this time only because it was actually $50 less than comfort for some odd reason. this is another thing with delta. check all combos of class coming and going, you might find a reasonable price combo when you least expect. also, we enjoy club access. we have a delta reserve card, so we get access, but delta has built some delta one specific clubs now, so it depends on what is important there. premium cabin does not get you access, making it less appealing than comfort again.

I don't know about Delta options (however, Youtube reviews can often be helpful.)

I flew ANA premium economy from NYC to Tokyo (direct). HIGHLY recommend. Much better than regular economy. Much better recline, wider seat (although I don't know if that mattered), it was only 2 seats between aisle and window which was perfect for my wife and I (regular economy had 3 seats), had a leg rest (which was huge), smaller/quieter cabin, decent food, amenity kit and lounge access before the flight. General consensus is service, cleanliness, etc is better with Asia-based airlines over US ones.

I decided to go with ANA for several reasons:

1. It’s a direct flight versus the connection with Delta. This decreased my total travel time by four hours.

2. Departure airport was about 45 minutes farther away for me to get to versus the ANA flight.

3. Departing time was much more convenient than the Delta flight.

4. The people I’m going to see highly recommended ANA from their past experiences.

5. It ended up being about $400 more per ticket not the $600 I thought it would be.

I appreciate all your input!
