Demario Davis back with the Jets, Calvin Pryor to Cleveland (1 Viewer)

Davis is JAG and likely a back-up. Pryor could be playing alongside Peppers. If he's playing centerfield in Gregg's offense then he could have value with big play scoring.

I think this was a spare parts trade.

Pryor might have a few high tackle games, but he only gets PT if Peppers is the suck.

Pryor as a center fielder?  Is that right?  That would shock me, and I would start any WR vs the Browns that week.

I don't disagree that this has very little impact on either team. Pryor may be better suited to play FS because of his obvious athleticism. They don't have much proven there really. Again, I don't think there much to get excited about.

Davis became replaceable once Collins was re-signed and Williams was brought in.  There isn't any depth now, but this move also opens up reps for young guys to show they're capable in case anything happens to either Collins or Kirksey.  Honestly, on the field, probably won't notice much of a difference since Davis isn't any good.  More big play potential, but that's really it.  Juice <> squeeze.

Pryor is just a change of scenery dart throw.  There are a lot of bodies in the defensive backfield, some more interesting than others.  Figuring out what to do with all of them will probably be Williams' biggest short term challenge.

But who?  Roto currently shows Tank freaking Carder at Mike.  I know that's not going to hold up, but this team seems to be very short on talent at LB, not even recently drafted young talent like they loaded up on at WR/DL the last couple of years.

Olugbode, Bello, Alexander, and Burgess.  Carder will stick due to his special teams role and can serve as an emergency safety valve.  If none of those guys stick out then someone(s) will get axed elsewhere Sep 1 that can step in and fill-in for injury.

The biggest takeaway from this move should be the Browns plan to spend the majority of their time with at least 5 DB's on the field.

I got cut off earlier but that was kind of where I was going, and was wondering if maybe Pryor was this guy?  Williams did this to a tee with Barron at STL and pulled off a huge reclamation of a throw-away S.

Yep, and given the price paid to acquire him I think it's worth it to find out.  There are plenty of potential contingency plans in case it isn't working either.  Also, while this team expects to be better in 2017, eyes are still focused on 2018.  While unlikely, Pryor could be an answer to some question in 2018.  Davis isn't.

Athleticism? No offense, but Pryor is garbage in space. He got burned repeatedly in coverage and takes terrible angles for tackles. Just watch some of the games from last year. It's one highlight after another against him. The Jets couldn't get rid of both of their safeties quick enough. Pryor also has a crappy attitude and the Jets are trying to get rid of the bad apples.

He's decent along the line of scrimmage when he can thump a guy right in front of him.

Davis is a jag. I saw him for years, too.  His contract is not guaranteed so the Jets can save money on this deal if they want to release Davis.

Like you said, not much to get excited about.  Both players can be depth.

The biggest benefactor of the deal is Christian Kirksey.

Any time he was taken off the field for Davis will return and he's being moved outside where he'll be able to rush the passer but should still inherit inside tackle production.

The caveat in all of this is Peppers and what role he'll be playing.

Peppers 'could' potentially clean up as an inside the box hybrid safey/inside LBer.

I have no idea how the backups will shake out but Kirksey just signed an extension and has already been highly productive.  I think his ceiling was just raised and no one seems to be talking him up.

Well someone has to play Mike.  I'm guessing that's Kirksey now.  Williams seems to like putting small fast runners in at Will.

Does Daryl Washington have any history with Williams?  Any of those Saints leftovers?  CLE needs to add a couple of bodies, either Big Nickel type safeties or some true LB's.  Maybe they sign Perry Riley to play Mike?

FBG daily email and the notes on MFL included a blurb that Tank Carder could be the starting ILB in Cleveland.

Is Cleveland going 4-3 full time? That's Williams game, historically. Ourlads still has them listed as a 3-4 but I can't imagine they stay that way under Greg Williams. Does Kirksey run as MLB in a 4-3 or will we actually see a 3-4 and the second ILB starter there may have value?

Worst case Pryor never amounts to anything. Best case he'll take the starting safety job or the sub-package role as big nickel/dime that Barron had before he moved full-time to WLB - which is probably a 60-70% role but high opportunity for IDP production. Barron got a LOT of criticism at one point as well and he turned out fine, so I think it's too early to say that Pryor does not have the talent and ability to get a meaningful role based on what we saw in New Jersey.

That being said Barron had some flash games for TBB where he totally dominated games roaming from sideline to sideline when they used him as an aggressive strong safety and dime linebacker (before they moved to a cover 2 that was a complete misfit for his skill set) that we haven't seen from Pryor, so I'm not saying that Pryor has shown the same talent Barron did. But in the right role his skill set could shine if his work ethic is where it needs to be. He certainly has an interesting opportunity as Williams' scheme is pretty much the perfect situation for him.
