Horrible news. My first NFL game I attended as a kid was the game he got hurt. If I remember correctly, the KC QB (Kreig?) stepped up in the pocket just as Byrd and his teammate both dove at him from opposite directions.

I remember reading his book "Rise and Walk" about his amazing recovery. What a shame.

Seeing the movie about his paralysis was the first time I realized why these guys only play until they're 40 at most, why everyone says it's so dangerous, and convinced me they all deserved a far bigger share of the NFL's $$.
