New Denver head coach Josh McDaniels must have thought running back was his team's most pressing free-agent need.

The Broncos have acquired two up two of them by agreeing to multiyear contracts with Correll Buckhalter (Philadelphia) and J.J. Arrington (Arizona) at the midnight opening of the signing period, FOXSports.com has learned. The deals will become official when both pass physical exams.

Buckhalter can be considered a frontrunner for a starting spot, while Arrington is likely to fill a niche as a third-down specialist and kickoff returner.

A backup behind Brian Westbrook for most of his eight seasons in Philadelphia, the 30-year-old Buckhalter has battled back from knee injuries that forced him to miss the 2002, 2004 and 2005 campaigns. Buckhalter started two games in 2008 and finished the season with 369 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 76 attempts. He also is an effective receiver coming out of the backfield.

Arrington never fulfilled the expectations that came with being Arizona's second-round draft pick in 2005. But he did start three games for the 2008 Cardinals team that reached Super Bowl XLIII. Arrington tallied 432 combined yards from scrimmage (rushing and receiving) and averaged 25.6 yards on kickoff returns with one touchdown.

Denver finished last season with seven running backs on injured reserve

While he's up there in years, I've always believed that(when healthy) Buckhalter can be an excellent RB. These are both nice moves for Denver.

I'll assume it goes:

Buckhalter(starter)

Arrington(3rd down, maybe KR)

Torian

Hillis(fullback, possible starter if/when Buck gets hurt)

I like these two signings by Denver. I believe Buckhalter/Torain will fight it out for the thunder role (I believe it'll be Torain if he's healthy), Arrington will handle the lightning role, & Hillis will be the FB & situational RB.

Buckhalter was the perfect guy to sign in case Torain can't stay healthy, & I actually think Arrington could shine in a Kevin Faulk-type role. Hillis has the potential to be a great FB.

I like the moves as well. Maybe a nightmare for fantasy owners, but as a Denver fan, they seem like great additions. :goodposting:

Clayton on ESPN saying they're only scheduled for visits, not signed yet.
Well you are right they have not officially signed the contracts but...Broncos Sign 2 RBs

This has got to be the final p.loy to motivate Tatum Bell.

 yeah a 31 yr old RB is the way to go....

The Broncos are strongly courting two of them by setting up visits with Correll Buckhalter (Philadelphia) and J.J. Arrington (Arizona) at the start of the signing period, a source told FOXSports.com. Both players are expected to sign Friday after passing physical exams.

I can see Arrington excelling in the Kevin Faulk role. I'd like to see him get a bigger slice of the pie, but the combo of him and hillis would be pretty solid

If this is true and both do sign:

I personally like it!! This gives the team to find out if Torain is any good or not? He can kinda wait in the wings instead of being tossed to the wolves? And as long as Buck can stay healthy(a bit of an if) he could be a top 8 to 10 PPR FB RB!!?? IF STAYS HEALTHY!! And Arrington can be a 3rd down guy and a great backup to Buck with Hillis as a FB/3rd down guy himself? Selvin could just go away? LOL

What Health? Probably not? Maybe this is why there signing TWO RBs?

Well, so much for the Shanny's gone, the Denver running back situation will stablize. Welcome to a NE multiple back mess.

I know that thing became way overused and tired, but those sort of "catch" phrases usually fade away w/o moderation help.

Buckhalter has always impressed whenever he's played. :thumbup:Arrington seems like a solid addition..he's versatile enough..with the new coaching staff , you got the idea that they were going to mimic the NE offense quite a bit, i.e., lots of RB's on the roster and each one would play on Sundays in one large RBBC..

do not count Hillis out.

it's not even March yet - there's lots of time before starters are announced. These guys will all compete. They have the advantage of experience, but Hillis seems to have heart.

Just like Pittman and GHearst were not opening day starters, there's no reason to believe Buckhalter nor Arrington will be either.

out of this group of Denver RBs , Buckhalter is the most complete.... and has had good success when he started.

what a mess
:kicksrock: This might work itself out, but it's an odd signal to add a pair of meh RBs on the first few hours of the FA market instead of addressing the D.
Arrington started looking pretty good once the Cards started using him. He can be the perfect 3rd down type back much the way Faulk was in the NE offense. Buckhalter has always been effective when healthy for the Eagles. He's a solid veterna that can move the chains. Moves like this aren't flashy but they can really help a team.

Actually when I first posted this and the first link I posted stated that they were signed and going to Denver then later the story was changed..thanks though... :goodposting:

Just because a RB is over 30 doesn't mean they can't be a stud. CMart won the rushing title at 32.I would suggest quit believing everything you read on these boards and actually watch a game every now and then.

I see a lot of people criticizing these moves and yet, that strikes me as too "fantasy oriented." Sure, the signing of a 31-year old backup with 3 season ending knee injuries and a smallish scatback deemed expendable by Arizona aren't likely to help fantasy owners hoping for an every down stud to emerge in Denver.

However, from a FOOTBALL perspective, seems like McDaniels is taking a page out of the New England book and looking to create a stable of reliable, versatile backs that can be leveraged effectively in combination. Remember the Pats rushing totals last year, as a unit, were exemplary and there's no reason Denver can't formulate a similar plan.

Not so hot for fantasy, might be pretty smart for the real gridiron.

As a Buckhalter owner the last 4 years, I always thought he looked very, very good when healthy. I was just telling someone a couple of months ago that I think he could be a starter for some teams. Now he has been injured a bit and is 31, but he has more talent than most people think, IMO.

The Denver spread offense is going to be pretty explosive. The trick will be figuring out which RB to roll with each week. Sounds familiar no?

If it happens...Hightower up?
No, if anything, it hurts him, but probably doesnt matter either way. Arrington is nothing more than a 3rd down back, so he really didnt hurt Hightowers value. What Arringtons departure does mean is that the Cardinals are more likely to bring in another RB, and likely one who is better than Arrington, and Hightower. Moreno or Wells would pretty much kill any value Hightower does have at this point.

I still like Hillis as the Denver RB to own.

With the JJ and Buck signing the the cost of Hillis will go down even more and he should be the goal line back and still a great receiving option out of the backfield. We knew they would bring in a RB or 2, I like his odds to compete against these two rather than a top RB.

Are you comparing CB to CMart? Come on you know where I am going with this...again signing a 31 rb isn't going to solve anything...

He'll play an Arringtonesque role. Despite his struggles running he was effective at the catch-and-run. I wouldn't expect him to return to featured back anytime soon, though. I expect Arizona to either draft someone or sign someone to be a two-down starter at least.

I will say one thing, and that is that you Hillis owners are persistent.

Persistent or delusional?

As of now before camp where do you put these 3 in order of cost to obtain?

Maybe not from a fantasy perspective.
