Al Wilson's stock plummeting

By Mike Klis

Once Wilson understood he was trade bait, he switched agents.

Phoenix - A new set of unpalatable options could be confronting Al Wilson.

Now that the football world knows Wilson failed his physical with the New York Giants, the chances of the Broncos dealing their middle linebacker have been drastically reduced.

If the Broncos can't deal Wilson, he could return to the Broncos, although most likely at a pay cut from his listed $5.2 million salary. If Wilson doesn't like the pay cut, he could accept his release and become a free agent.

Yes, the NFL is a cold-hearted business, even for players as popular and accomplished as Wilson.

"I like Al," Broncos owner Pat Bowlen said here Sunday. "The defensive coaches didn't think his play made it worth what we were paying him."

Once Wilson understood he was trade bait, he switched agents from Norm Nixon, the former Los Angeles Lakers guard, to Peter Schaffer, who has extensive experience in moving high-profile Broncos who have fallen out of favor.

Schaffer's clientele includes Trevor Pryce, Mike Anderson and Ashley Lelie to name a few.

The Broncos and Schaffer had Wilson traded to the Giants on Friday in exchange for what sources confirmed was a third-round pick in the upcoming draft. That deal was nixed, however, when the Giants' medical team flagged the condition of Wilson's neck and back.

Although Schaffer will continue to seek a new team for Wilson, his task is considerably more challenging than it was a week ago. He said his first step is to gather more information.

"I'm not a doctor, and I don't question doctors," Schaffer said. "But I haven't talked to the Giants' doctors. The Broncos' doctors said he's fine."

Schaffer must then find a team willing to take a risk on a talented, if reputedly battered, linebacker who is about to enter his ninth season.

"I'm confident we're going to get something done that will make Al happy not only for next year, but for the rest of his career," Schaffer said.

Does that mean staying in Denver?

"I don't know," Bowlen said. "That's a question for Al and the head coach."

As Jake's world turns

A league source says Tampa Bay will put serious pressure on retired quarterback Jake Plummer to at least participate in training camp, or the Buccaneers will go after the $5 million to $7 million in a prorated signing bonus he may owe for not fulfilling his contract.

The source said Plummer would not have to pay back any bonus if he is released during camp.

What's in it for the Bucs to have Plummer report with his heart not in it? At most, the Bucs believe once Plummer shows up, his competitive instincts will take over and he'll wind up outperforming current quarterbacks Jeff Garcia and Chris Simms.

At worst, Plummer would provide insurance in case Garcia or Simms get hurt.

And if none of those scenarios work out, the Bucs believe they'll get up to $7 million.

Who's your Big Daddy?

The Broncos likely will nix a second trade. It doesn't appear defensive tackle Dan "Big Daddy" Wilkinson will be donning an orange or blue Nike swoosh next season.

Wilkinson, 34, was acquired this month from Miami in exchange for a sixth-round pick but concerns about his knee and desire to play have put the deal on hold.

Even if Wilkinson agrees to play, the Broncos no longer want to surrender a draft pick for him - a condition the Dolphins may not accept. Knowing this, the Broncos already moved to replace Wilkinson by signing former Cleveland Browns defensive tackle Alvin McKinley last week.

Soliciting Fox's wisdom

People have it wrong. It's not NFL commissioner Roger Goodell who is about to revise the players' off-field conduct policy. It's the NFL players who want a new players' policy.

And should Goodell announce the new policy here Tuesday as expected during the NFL owners meetings, the league and fans can thank the Broncos' Domonique Foxworth, among a few others, for the revisions.

Foxworth, the Broncos' assistant player rep to Rod Smith, was part of a players' advisory council that met with league officials in Indianapolis and Hawaii the past month to discuss player conduct.

"We proposed a lot of things to the owners and Mr. Goodell," Foxworth said. "What they put together I have no idea. But I would expect it to be aggressive because they recognize how bad our industry can be hurt by the action of a few."

Lot of info in that article.Geez, Pat Bowlen doesn't pull any punches, huh?
Unlike others he knows better than to question his coaches, esp. Shanahan. It must be Bates who doesnt think much of Al Wilson and Shanny just has to trust the judgement of the new defensive boss.I will be sad to see Wilson go, he was always a favorite of mine and lots of Denver fans feel that way. Him staying in Denver is also mentioned as a possibility, but I just don't think its realistic anymore. :pickle:

I'm very glad I got off this guy a couple years ago. His production just wasn't there; Gold has been outplaying him for a while now.

Who takes over for Wilson then? Does DJ move in and do they have a replacement at SLB?
There are several possible scenarios, its not a sure thing that Al Wilson leaves (thats just my opinion, and really when all is said and done I don't know ****). If Al sticks around he will probably be a 2 down LB, getting replaced by DJ in the nickel, he might even move to the outside. My money is on DJ being the man in the middle for the Broncos in the future, but they also recently extended Nate Webster who should also get a fair shot. I just can't see Webster winning that job, others certainly doesnt agree with this tho. Drafting someone to play SLB is also an option, Stewart Bradley in the 3rd maybe ? I still THINK Al will refuse to re-structure and become an FA, DJ moves to the middle and instant FF stardom. Who takes over at SLB remains a mystery at this point.

Sorry to raise more questions than answers, but this situation is clear as mud.

Al Wilson's Broncos career is over. The Broncos will release the former defensive captain today, according to a source close to the situation.

A news conference is scheduled at 2 p.m. to discuss Wilson's future at the Denver office of Wilson's agent, Peter Schaffer.

There is a strong chance Wilson, 29, may not play in 2007 and that he could decide to end his career.

The five-time Pro Bowl selection suffered a neck injury Dec. 3 against Seattle. He was taken off the field on a stretcher and spent a short time at a local hospital before being released. Wilson then came back to finish the season.

However, on March 23, he failed a physical with the New York Giants, who nixed a proposed trade from Denver. Wilson subsequently saw a specialist in Los Angeles who confirmed the injury.

Wilson was a first-round draft choice out of Tennessee in 1999. He quickly became a fierce vocal leader and a fan favorite. Wilson was voted a starter for the Pro Bowl this past season, but he didn't play because of he had postseason thumb surgery.

Bump for Webster? At least, until Denver drafts a replacement.

Broncos | Team releases A. Wilson

Fri, 13 Apr 2007 11:39:51 -0700

ESPNews reports the Denver Broncos have released LB Al Wilson.

Patient DJWill owners will be rewarded no matter what as this should get him firmly in the nickel package, but if he becomes the MLB, you could be looking at a top 10-15 LB based on what he did his rookie year when he was just a pup.

any chance he gets picked up...Is he a Hold or Drop?
He's definitely a hold for now. There were multiple teams interested before he failed a physical. When that was made public, any trade value he had was dead. He may not have big value where he lands, but it's worth taking a wait and see approach if you've got the time and roster space.

I think Williams or Webster will be the starter in the middle. If they cant find someone to play SLBer, Williams will not be moved and Webster will be the starter in the middle. After the draft we should really know who plays where.

Al Wilson is nothing but waiver wire fodder now. He may be picked up by another team but shouldn't be in the top 50 LB's anymore with that type of injury. There are better linebacker's on the waiver wire.

RMN reporting Williams will likely line up at MLB in mini-camp. The Denver Post was less committal this morning, leaving the position open to Williams, Webster, or a new draftee. They specifically mentioned David Harris as a possibility. Williams has the most upside here, as he'll be the three down player no matter where he plays. Webster or a draftee would be a two down MLB only.

Rocky Mountain News

That other direction, at least initially, almost certainly will be linebacker D.J. Williams. Williams, one of the most athletically gifted players on the roster, already has started at least one season at each of the outside linebacker spots and will now move into the middle, at least to see how performs at the position as the Broncos go through their offseason minicamps.

Nate Webster, who played in at least 15 games in four consecutive seasons with Tampa Bay before having two knee surgeries in his time with the Bengals, is another option on the roster.

The Broncos, though, have been committed to getting Williams more playing time. And even if Wilson had remained with the team, it's likely he would have surrendered some playing time to Williams on passing situations.

Wilson and Ian Gold were the linebackers in the Broncos nickel (five defensive backs) formation last season. But indications early in the offseason were assistant head coach/defense Jim Bates was committed to getting Williams on the field more.
