why did they pick a qb did anyone see that coming
I actually had them getting Young, thought he'd be the one to slip. I've been saying for a long time that Plummer is 31 and it's time for the Broncos to start looking for a replacement.

As a Bronco fan, I'm not happy w/ the Cutler pick. To me, Plummer has a good 4-5 years left - picking up Cutler, and in light of Denver's play calling over the past 3-4 years - says to me that Shannahan wants to open up the offense through the air and doesn't completely trust Plummer to do it. Last year Denver was very 1-dimensional - When Pittsburgh took that dimension away, Denver was done.

I think the Cutler pick is Shannahan trying to balance out the offense moving forward. If so, the Walker deal MUST happen.

Other possibility is that Shannahan had Cutler rated as the top QB and couldn't afford not to take him.

As an owner of Plummer in a dynasty league, what's your move? Target Cutler in Round 1 as long-term insurance?

And much like I told everyone over and over again, Young was not slipping, especially not that far......

Seriously, this has ruined my day.
I'm watching this with two diehard Bronco fans. They jumped for joy. Both of them were thrilled with the pick. I kid you not. And no, they're not idiots. They're diehards, college football fans, played a ton of football, Bronco do or die. They love the pick.

and there we go. Consider this fair warning - 2006 Broncos will be very different than 2005 Broncos in terms of play selection.

I am speaking soley on my love of Van Pelt (CSU), who was progressing nicely, surprising everyone yet again. This probably kills him, as far as the Broncos are concerned.

As a CSU Alumn, I'm a huge BVP fan, but I loooove the broncos picking up Cutler

Well take the CSU hat off and this is great for Denver. Gives us a possable franchise QB since Mr. Elway.

At first i had my doubts, not in Cutler, but the amount of talent that was dropping, and the chance to get Bunkley, Ngata etc....but looking back, and with the addition of Jwalk, i love the move

Yup. You are probably correct that Van Pelt either goes elsewhere or contents himself to the QB3 role.I think this was a brilliant move by the Broncos. Cutler will be very very good in 2007-8-9 or whenever after sitting behind Plummer for a year or two.

Exactly. There is always a boatload of really stupid teams that draft in the top of the 1st round. Tennessee has joined that fraternity.

You have to groom a QB for the future. Dont forget having capable backups. Cutler is mobile and should at least be adequete moving forward as a Plummer replacement.

THere is always the chance is ends up being better than Plummer ...

The Cutler pick comes down to two things.

#1- Bradlee Van Pelt was the only other QB on Denver's roster. Bradlee Van Pelt was a great college player, gritty guy... but he's not an NFL QB. If he was forced to play for any extended time, Denver would be in big trouble.

#2 (and this is the big one)- Before today, you know the highest Denver had picked during the Shanahan era? #15 overall. Let that sink in for a second. Aside from the fact that that's a truly stunning accomplishment (one that no other team has managed to duplicate over that span), it has presented... problems. For one, Denver has never been in a position to go and get a franchise type QB. The Carson Palmers, Eli Mannings, Ben Roethlisbergers... all of those stud top-tier QBs have always been long gone by the time Denver has picked. Between Cutler's mini-slide and Denver's bounty of picks, though, they found themselves in a position to grab a player many people consider a better pro QB prospect than Matt Leinart, a guy who would have been the consensus #1 overall last year.

Normally, you can pick a player outside of the top 10-15 picks and have him stand a decent chance of becoming a great pro... except at QB. There are success stories, of course, but the number of elite, franchise-type QBs who wind up coming from outside of the first dozen picks is pretty small. If Shanahan believed he might not be in this position again for another dozen years, I believe he HAD to go and get that franchise QB now, while he had the chance.

There is one thing I wonder, though. Does this mean Pony Boy will finally stop criticising Shanahan for deciding to release Matt Mauck?

Good post.Denver must have felt he was the #1 QB, and a top 3-4 player overall. And yes, added the franchise label. And in that case, it was a good move. Gotta trust your scouts.

They balanced this long term pick, with an impact WR in Walker. So for day one, short and long term issues were address.

I did the same & am absolutely thrilled with the pick also. Plummer will get DEN to the playoffs, but he's not good enough to carry the team when they drop behind by double digits or when opposing teams are good enough to take away the running game. PIT made that abundantly clear.LOL @ anyone that thinks BVP is starting material in the NFL at QB. I love the kid for his blue collar attitude & his willingness to do whatever it takes to win. He just doesn't have the ability to succeed at the pro level though. It's a true shame, but true nonetheless.

I think that depends on where you pick. If it is after the 6th pick or so, I would say he is a must for Plummer owners. Cutler will be given a chance to start at some point in the very near future. My guess is that he leads the team for the 2007 season.

I loved the pick by the Broncos. Plummer still has plenty left and it will not force them to throw Cutler out there before Year 3.

I have Plummer in one of my dynasty leagues and we just had our rookie draft. I picked Cutler at 2.04.
