FOXBOROUGH, Mass. - The New England Patriots acquired DE Derrick Burgess in a trade with Oakland for undisclosed draft considerations today. Additionally, the Patriots released OL Al Johnson today.

i hate the patriots.........they just keep making these damn subtle/quiet moves(springs/bodden/galloway/fred/filll needs n the draft/polish up a backup QB and turn him into a 2nd rounder) like this and put together a hellacious squad. in the meanwhile my niners have signings of BRANDON JONES-esque proportions and draft a DIVA that may rival TO before he even dons a gold helmet. we've got alex smith and Shaun Hill at QB and we don't even sniff Jay Cutler, but we do draft a QB with dyslexia.

good to see a big dropoff after Pioli leaves :sadbanana:

Patriots don't care about the pick/s given up as they'll just trade down again and regain whats lost(if they didn't already have multiple picks in each round) and still get exactly whom they wanted. will be interesting to see what it took to get Burgess and what it took for the dophins to sign Jason Taylor

Jene, I am assuming Trevor Scott is the main beneficiary in this change?
Nope, Greg Ellis.Burgess, is, and always has been, a LE, rushing over the right tackle. Which is where Ellis lines up now. Scott has exclusively worked at RE. You could make an argument that his job might be harder now, with no Burgess applying pressure from the other side. The far more interesting thing to me, is: Who loses snaps in new England?

yeah, we got a couple extra picks next year from trading down this year.

helps offset the Vrabel loss and gives the Patriots a pass rushing specialist.

they can bring some heat with Burgess, Thomas, Green, and Seymour now.

I'm surprised Al Davis would do this. Wasn't he pissed about the whole Randy Moss deal?

Pierre Woods and Tedy Bruschi, is my guess. And by default some linemen get some marginal rest, especially if they are struggling to apply any pressure (be it Seymour, Warren or Wilfork).Adalius is working both inside and outside.Mayo is working 3rd down in all pahses.Guyton is actually seing time in nickle/dime.That leaves Woods and Bruchi with no passing down snaps. Unless the coaches really are down on one of the linemen (Sey? :lmao: ), which isnt impossible.
Yeah, Burgess is 260 aftyer lunch, he ain't replacing Seymour anytime soon. ;)

Jene, doyou think MFL will change Ellis' position to DE now?
That was going to happen anyway. Ellis has been reported a DE since he signed in Oakland and Rotoworld has him listed there. I'd be very surprised, after the last two years' precedent, if Ellis is anything other than a DE on opening weekend.

I don't think there's any main beneficiary, actually. Burgess was apparently going to play mostly on passing downs and the team has been moving Scott around in their nickel package early during camp. My guess is that there would've been some rotation on early downs, but that Scott and Ellis were going to get the majority of snaps whether Burgess showed or not. Jay Richardson may now get some of those rotational snaps.

Pierre Woods will lose snaps. I think Burgess' role will essentially be the same in New England -- a situational rusher with some rotational base defensive snaps. It gives the Patriots some additional nickel flexibility, as Woods won't work as well as a rush end as Burgess can.
