Desert Island Album Draft - 15th Anniversary Edition - 50 Rounds in the books, sign up now for KP's listening program (1 Viewer)

I owe some picks.

Expect REM and Arcade Fire to each get another added.  Trying to decide between Disco, Motown (my #1 record), or Chill Wave for my last. My second favorite Who record is also still available.  Grr.

As of now (and how updated the spreadsheet is) here is the unofficial numbers (5 or more) on Artists chosen:

5: Arcade Fire, Ben Folds, Black Sabbath, Elton John, INXS, Iron Maiden, Miles Davis, Steely Dan, The Kinks, The Police, The Smithereens*, Wilco, Yes

6: Elvis Costello, Metallica, Pearl Jam, Rush, Stevie Wonder, The Cure, Tom Petty, U2, Willie Nelson

7: Bruce Springsteen, Pink Floyd, Spoon, Talking Heads

8: Beck, David Bowie, Neil Young, Prince, Queen

9: Bob Dylan, Led Zeppelin, Radiohead, R.E.M.

13: The Rolling Stones

14: The Beatles

I may have missed someone in the 5s, also very surprised at Beck and Spoon being so high.

*Smithereens all taken by one drafter (I think)
I'm counting nine Springsteen in my head.  75-85 included.  I got Greetings, Wild Innocent, Born to Run, Nebraska, River, Darkness, Born Usa, Tunnel of Love, and 75-85 live.

There are 8 on the spreadsheet - I missed the "E Steet Band" one.

There were nine taken Unless I am mistaken about USA.  Eephus took Tunnel of Love, I took Greetings and Nebraska.  All the others went earlier.  Actually, did Born in the USA not go? I thought someone mentioned Cover Me but maybe not.

Edited to add:Born in the USA was taken, so Nine Springsteen

This metal head jammed this when it came out and the old metal head still listens to it more frequently than I should admit.   It is cheesy for sure but always puts me in a good mood.  Maybe it’s because it puts me back in 9th grade when all that mattered was sports, music, and girls.

@Northern Voice, could you please take out the code you put in for "skip" to get a yellow highlight?  I'm doing spreadsheet clean-up/updating, and one of tim's choices was by someone named "Skip."  I worked to remove the highlighting for an embarrassingly long time before I realized the issue.

48.34 Arcade Fire - Everything Now 2017

Everything Now

Creature Comfort

My least favorite Arcade Record, but I do love the first side mostly.

PICK 49.21

BECK - COLORS (2017)

This album is fun and flowing - electronic dance rock by Beck ...it's good.

Songs

- Dear Life

- Dreams
Sorry, I took this in round 25.
NEW PICK FOR RD 49

PICK 49.21

ELVIS COSTELLO AND THE IMPOSTERS - LOOK NOW (2018)

Another relatively new discovery for me.  Beautiful song writing, no longer an angry Elvis, he has 3 songs in collaboration with Burt Bacharach, and one with Carole King, my personal favorite.

- Burnt Sugar Is So Bitter

- Unwanted Number

bonus track:  Under Lime

Rd 49: HurryUp, We'reDreaming by M83 (2011)

One of those albums that wasn't on my radar because I assumed it would go in the first 20 rounds or so. Is this album not cool anymore or is just a little too electronic for the board?

Midnight City

New Map
I enjoy this album, but as with many double albums, there's maybe a little too much filler for my liking, hence why I took a different one that I prefer a bit more.  It's still more than worthy to be taken in this draft though.

49.31 The Outfield - Play Deep (1985)

Time for a banging power trio that I used to listen to constantly in the mid 80s.  Sounded good on my Kraco cassette player and Pioneer Speakers turned to 11 in my piece of #### Datsun.

Your Love

Say It Isn't So

I’m not a big M83 fan and this is the only album of theirs I’ve listened to a lot. I just thought it was their biggest hit and critical success. Maybe not though. Maybe I am misremembering the album being a bigger darling than it was.

Nice. Glad some of these totally-'80s albums are being drafted. There are obviously tons of them still out there.

Yes but I am not going to attempt it from my phone

49.06 The Pointer Sisters, The Pointer Sisters (1973) (Note - since i took Beethoven's 9th in the 18th round, i can take this now and still have 10 Classical recordings on my island like i wanted. Please put the two songs here into the Playlist)

The biggest figure in Boston radio when i was in it was a cat named Norm Nathan, a pillar of broadcasting, civic duty & charitable endeavours. He hosted Saturday leadership breakfasts for the radio community and i was tremendously honored when i was invited. Through it i met the Rev Huston Crayton, still a tremendous force for leadership in Boston and the nation, esp for his work on hunger. We became friends, he invited me onto his program on a 500-watt Roxbury radio station and to give my agnostic witness from the pulpit of his church on the South Shore. It was one of those churches where Sunday's a whole all-day thing, with catechism, pot luck and general fellowship, something all families should participate in no matter their religious beliefs. Rev Crayton was, is a serious man, except for one thing - the first two Pointer Sister albums made him absolutely silly, gushing and otherwise ebulliating with joy & transportation. I never seen anybody dance like when they'd put this on at the BBQs.

Bonnie Pointer - who died yesterday - was the star of the Sisters, like Martha Reeves, who also never got to be a star because she couldnt break the association with her group. I got lucky to work with two amazingly talented women in the music biz around that time and that's what made me wanna be an A&R guy - to help women forge an independent course worthy of their talent thru a music industry that was lined up against them in soooo many ways. One of my bands opened for Martha Reeves on her solo showcase tour, so i got to watch how everything but the needs and cause of the artist had been considered in all the fuss. I wished i had been successful with my own problematic female artist so i could have helped others break out, like Miss Bonnie tried to do about a year after this. Bonnie Pointer left this world without everybody knowing what she coulda been. I do, baby - RIP

That's How I Feel

Wang Dang Doodle (seriously, check out this vid. Now, THAT's a girl group!)

49.23 - Claude Debussy: La Mer; Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune; Danse; Nocturnes - Philadelphia Orchestra/Eugene Ormandy (1959)

I'm going to spend a lot of time gazing at the ocean surrounding my island so I might as well have music that celebrates the sea (la mer).  There have been dozens, perhaps hundreds of recordings of Debussy's orchestral suite over the years but this one on Columbia from the early days of stereo is my go-to version.  More recent digital recording offer superior fidelity and separation but I love the warm, natural sounding ambience of this record.

I get where you are coming from.   I THINK most of us take the ribbing in stride and know it come from a place of love since most have done dozens of these together.

That said, it is a reason why I like the idea that I posted a little better - where you are assigned a drafter's island and pick a few albums.  That way there is probably less bashing if I am not randomly assigned a twangy country or reggae album.
:goodposting:

I've mentioned it throughout, but there are some artists in which i don't understand why they elicit a negative reaction from others. There are others that do, I understand why, it isn't rational, but those that possess it also seem to understand that it isn't rational. And hell the same's true for me. But there are also others I've added knowing they're a niche group, I'm a part of it, and that many won't enjoy it.

To me - that's just music.

I'm game for anything to be honest, not a big fan of trashing other folks selections though, I just don't find that too cool... but that's just me...
I agree. It seems like the negative reviews just made me a little less than thrilled to see in print, especially (ahem) if I for some reason had written them. But that's just me. If I were to write one, they'd be only positive ones about songs or albums for some reason. Not that I mind when it's dispassionate criticism and I happen to agree, but how do I know how or why each person drives them to select what they did? Could be a great backstory behind it and that makes it special.

So I'd be sort of torn. I don't mind the dispassionate criticism done right; it's just so rarely done right.

Recommended Songs (from Spotify) from our 3000+ playlist:

Jerry Lee Lewis - What'd I Say (Live)

Lyle Lovett - Flyin' Shoes

Journey - Anytime (Live)

The Allman Brothers - In Memory of Elizabeth Reed (Live)

Matthew Sweet - This Moment

Wu- Tang - C.R.E.A.M. (Live)

Evan Dando Of Lemonheads - Frying Pan

Ben Folds - Not the Same (Live)

Prince - One Nite Alone (Live)

Talking Heads - Take Me to the River

(Spotify thinks we really like "live" versions)

You don't - and the criticism offers a great opportunity to explain the backstory, if one exists. It can work if we are all aligned on it all being constructive and we don't take any of it too seriously. But I also get that's a tall ask of such a large group and that it may not be feasible. I think it's important to talk this out in advance like we are.

ok, can we shoehorn in "Back to Mystery City" instead?

✌  tyvm, K4
I just checked. Spotify does not have the album, either. And there's nothing to stop them from listing it because it was the same label (PVC/Jem) as the Bangkok Shocks, Saigon Shakes and Oriental Beat, both of which they have. But they should have Mystery City on a comp.

:(

I'm with zamboni, I think album openers/closers might be a really open-ended and good draft.

eta* I added the closers in there to make it easier. Plus, I, lIke MAC below, have a 1.01, too.

Just did a playlist of my albums taken (minus #50) and I have:

636 songs

45 hours and 36 minutes.

I'm going to get lonely quickly.

Might try to go a few days only shuffling this mix and listen to nothing else.
