I really don't want to make you listen to something you won't have any chance of liking.  I'm pretty sure you are familiar with some of my albums already.  If you haven't listened to the Eurythmics album, or Delta Rae, ELO, Elton John, Ronstadt, or the Tull any of those would be good choices as far as I'm concerned.

LOL.  My island is such a mish-mash of stuff.   Like another posted, I would go with your mood.   Honestly, I am not overly recommending Mindcrime to too many people, but if you are in the 80s metal mood (maybe leaning a tad more to the hair metal, not towards the Metallica metal).     I would narrow it down more like this:

 - Since you seem to like that Lord Huron album, I think you might click with Ghosts of the Great Highway or that Phoebe Bridgers album.  

-  of the ones you mention, I would say maybe The Groundhogs.    I am always hesitant to suggest metal to people, and honestly don't know where you are at on that spectrum.  Gojira is French, but there are shades of Sepultura on that album, and that is your neck of the woods, so...  Of the rest of the metal albums, Mastodon might be the most accessible? 

-  Depending on their mood, the ones I left on the list after deleting your bolded are the ones that I would have the highest confidence recommending to people

Oh come on Google.  I created a playlist of all fifty albums I drafted and then created a link to share with the public, unfortunately if you're not a Google music/play/YouTube whatnot subscriber, you can only sample one minute of each song, and obviously you can't randomize it either. 

It's too bad because it's surprising cohesive playlist based upon a sample size of 12‐15 songs.

I'm gonna give you Blood Orange's 2013 album Cupid Deluxe as one of the picks only because you took the Basquiat soundtrack, and this Blood Orange music video for the song "Chosen", which may or may not be a fanmade video I'm not 100% sure because it's a very Blood Orange-esque music video to make, is just a 6 1/2 minute edit of clips from Basquiat.  I almost linked that video after you picked the Basquiat soundtrack, but never did, so here you go.

Do you have an island list somewhere so I can see what other music you picked?

 
I'll try to get started on KP's island tomorrow. Just gonna throw a couple more leftovers at y'all.

Wayne Shorter feat. Milton Nascimento, Native Dancer - This was the other Milton album I mentioned I was considering in my Clube da Esquina write-up. Wonderful combination. Ponta de Areia

Hedwig & The Angry Inch - Not many musicals I'd consider for my desert island other than Blues Brothers and this one. Some of the tracks I find just okay, but the hits rock, and Origin of Love is amazing.

Titãs, Cabeça Dinossauro - More angry '80s Brazilian rock. Titãs have had many different sounds over the years (in part due to contributions from multiple talented singers/songwriters), but this is probably their heaviest album, both lyrically and musically. Bichos (not including the full title 'cause Portuguese or not, better safe than sorry; it's akin to "Rotten Critters", but I'd go with "Rotten ####ers" to keep the character of the original)

Dude.  I had this all typed up for my Round 48 pick and then decided I didn't want to put "musical" music on the playlist.  I love that song and "Wicked Little Town" the best.  This is my favorite musical soundtrack by far.  There are a couple of songs I thought I could put on the playlist, but ultimately I just turned to something else.  I still kinda regret this.  :(

Pick 28:  Page and Plant Unledded, No Quarter (1994).  I like Zep well enough, but this MTV Unplugged event with Page and Plant doing acoustic and fronting (among other things) a Moroccan string band was just...  cool. 

Pick 29:  Green Day, Nimrod (1997).  For me, Green Day was one of the few bands trying to save the reputation of the 90's from being a musical wasteland, along with a couple of other acts like No Doubt and Soundgarden.  While this album doesn't have the gravitas of their later work, it's still a fine example of "Not sucking in the 90's".

Pick 30:  Metallica and the San Francisco Symphony, S&M (1999).  Metallica backed by a full orchestra?!?  Hell, yes, sign me up!

 
My leftovers were a lot of metal:

Megadeth, a few Maiden albums (surprised Piece of Mind didn't go), more Opeth, Messhugah, Slayer - Seasons in the Abyss, Deftones - Around the Fur, Slipknot - Iowa.  

But also:

Chvrches - new one

10,000 Maniacs - MTV Unplugged

Phantogram - any of them

Helmet - Meantime

Pearl Jam - Vitalogy

Quicksand - either

Faith No More - Epic 

 a bunch of pop like Lady Gaga, Kesha, etc..

Fair.   Mostly him, Opie, and a couple others that get my blood boiling.  

I dip my toe in there every once in awhile b/c I basically took myself off social media, but I usually regret it after a couple days.

Fabulous.  I'm adding it.  I don't have a list anywhere.  @Binky The Doormat or anyone else, any help?  I'm scared to touch the spreadsheet at this point to sort it.

If it makes it any easier, I'll give you the two I decided to choose:

Nas - Illmatic - It's not that I dislike rap and hip-hop; it's that I never know where to start.  I figure this is an iconic album I should know more about.

Los Campesinos! - A band I remember hearing a lot about but never getting to, for whatever reason.  I'm familiar with You! Me! Dancing! but that's it.

You really don't have to figure out what you think I might like.  I'm open to trying something new.

I had Tegan and Sara, Lady Gaga, Ex Hex, and Phantogram on my general list but none of their albums really felt strong enough top to bottom for the island.

My close calls were in no order -

  • Sunflower Bean - Human Ceremony
  • Mikal Cronin -  MCII
  • King Princess -  Cheap Queen
  • Purity Ring - Shrines (which probably I should've picked but I always pick it)
  • Braids' Native Speaker (which I also always pick)
  • a couple BANKS albums
  • a couple Frank Ocean albums (I'm stunned no one took any of these)
  • Real Estate - Days
  • some random Japanese jazz hip hop albums

What a trifecta here.

S&M was my late round getting too creative Metallica add I expected because I didn't think there was anyway I got Master. 

Nimrod only knew two methods - miss or hit. Some were massive misses. But their high points were really high. Hitchin A Ride may be the best track they've ever made.

Instead of listening to my assignment I went down a System of a Down rabbit hole.  I think I listened to the album Tasker got a lot more than it's brother for whatever reason.  

Every time I think of SoaD, I think of my wife's assessment of them as "the ugliest band in metal" after seeing a pic or a video.

@Buffaloes you drew the golden ticket to the weirdest thing I drafted.  It's 148 minutes long (2 CDs) which is a definite slog.  The second disc is probably a better listen because you avoid nine minutes of Debussy and the Peter Brotzmann track which is hard to listen to  CD2 starts with track 16 (Black Satin)

This is quite the combo.  Legendary hip-hop album and a quirky loud-and-fast pop album.  Hope you enjoy em.

1st bolded = that's about where I landed with them.  None of them seemed as good top to bottom, which is why St. Vincent won the tie breaker.

Not sure if it's good or bad, but I was mentioning to the wife the other day that because of this draft, I am not sure I have listened to a podcast in about 2 1/2 weeks besides for the 2.2s before I fall asleep when I get to bed.

Nope, my Ambient dive around the Millennium was short and shallow.  I'm listening to more ambient now that ever but more Modern Classical and less beats.

Nah, only Faith No More album that got taken was Angel Dust. "Epic" is on The Real Thing, which is also in my leftovers list. Love "From Out of Nowhere" on that one too.

Yeah, "Wicked Little Town" would be my other playlist pick too. Was thiiiiiiiiiis close to taking it in the last couple of rounds, kinda regret it too. :lmao:

 
@Abrantes please give me some recs, but Siri randomized me to Tom Waits, Rain Dogs.  I am taking this because I have generally liked the little Tom Waits I have heard and my dad became a fan very late in life. So this will be mostly new to me.

I don't want to say anything as to potentially unintentionally influence his experience, but as much as i go to both of them I go to this one more. I'll share why later.
