De'Shaun Foster Has Broken Ankle (1 Viewer)

I'm watching the NFL Network, and I didn't hear him say anything but that he hurt his ankle and it sounded like they'd "probably" be without him next week. That was a brutal tackle from behind.

That's a real bummer. He was really doing well the last few games bringing a much needed spark to the Panthers running game. Looks like it's going to be Nick Goings now. I suppose Jamal Robertson, He Hate Me, and Brad Hoover will get some carries too, and Steve Smith will probably see some more reverses as well.

Did you hear yours in the press conference? Unless I drastically misunderstood Fox, he said "broken ankle". Will wait for confirmation. :)

Yeah, you're right. I think Rich Eisen just mentioned it.Must've missed the word "broken."

It was almost a horse collar tackle, and there wasn't much he could do about it.

I really feel for this guy. I mean he was putting together an awesome post season in a contract year and he was playing through the pain of turf toe and a sore shoulder to help his team win and prove he can play tough. The guy was running very well against the Bears today and the Panthers will miss him next week.

Carolina Panthers running back DeShaun Foster broke his ankle in Sunday's 29-21 NFC divisional playoff win at Chicago and is out for the season.Foster was injured with about 11 minutes left in the third quarter when he was tackled by Bears linebacker Hunter Hillenmeyer after a 4-yard gain.Foster, the Panthers' leading rusher this season, had 54 yards on 16 carries against the Bears.Foster has been the feature back since late in the regular season.Nick Goings, the backup to Foster, would likely start against the Seahawks in the NFC Championship game at 6:30 p.m. on Sunday at Seattle.

The Panther's are Steve Smith's team. They can win with Nick Goings at RB.The same can't be said for Colbert/Prohl/Carter as the WR1 can it?

What's Stephen Davis' status?  Can you take a player off IR during the playoffs?
I don't think so. Goings is pretty good though.
I agree. From a Seattle perspective, Goings in the backfield is about equivalent to Foster. Its Smith that scares the bejeebus out of me.

Add Jake Delhomme to this equation and you have a winner. Smith is exceptional and is really making a case for being the best WR in the game, however, Delhomme is very good with WR 1's just ask Mushy.Smith is great, but Delhomme is doing a good job of targeting his WR 1 and allowing him to make plays. Delhomme never gets enough credit.

Agreed. The Panthers don't lose much going from DeShaun Foster to Nick Goings. He is a solid chain moving back with decent receiving skills. (45 receptions in 2004)

Isnt Foster a UFA also........so many guys going into FA that are on bad injuries.
If this is the case, do they let him go? Or do they go in another direction?

Is anyone really surprised that Deshaun Foster once again could not put together a solid, injury-free season? Every year I hear hype on this kid but (a) he gets hurt and/or (b) puts up very mediocre numbers.

any word on peppers?
In the paper today Peppers said he was fine and will play this weekend, but Fox hasn't commented on that. Brad Hoover also said everybody will play hurt, but again he isn't the coach. Fox did say that Goings will take over for Foster, and Jamal Robertson will back up Goings. It's too bad what happened to Foster. He was running well the last few games, and with a bad turf toe injury no less. Hopefully Goings will prove once again he can carry the load, and it will be tough this weekend. The Seahawks are not an easy team to run against.

I would think they have to go with Goings and Shelton next year. If Foster proves healthy and can be had cheap, maybe sign him to compete. But after what Goings did for them last year and what he will do for them in the next 2 weeks, I think he proves to be the man there.

I think this is better for Car. I think after yet another injury it makes the decision easier for them. There is no way they resign him unless it's for peanuts.I see someone like Barlow getting cut or traded or perhaps an Ahman Green type.

Shelton looked awful. I wouldn't plan on anything from him. So bad I think you plan without him and then if he "pans out" that's a lucky break then. Anyone got his preseason stats?

Shelton was flat out awful in the preseason. that being said, he's had all year to learn to lower his pad level and the panthers will still give him a shot to get back in the mix. He's not out of their plans yet. if his minicamps and offseason team activities are as bad as his camp last year, he could be pushed out for a rookie or FA.Its nice to have Goings be able to be "the man" when asked, but he's very valuable as a fullback and if they can keep him there and as a backup tailback, i think they will.

its no surprise, really.the guy makes fragile chris brown look like the Rock of Gibraltar.foster is worse that robert smith with all of the injuries..

Foster is brittle! The guy is always hurt.
I don't think Foster breaking his ankle has a thing to do with him being brittle. Unless he is the rubberband man, anybody who got tackled like that and their foot being bent back is going to break their leg or ankle. Terrell Owens broke his leg in a similiar tackle last year. As a matter of fact, Terrell Owens broke his collar bone the year before that, just as Foster did (which his break was a freak accident) and people don't label Owens as being brittle. Foster has only missed one game this year due to injury, and had been running hard and tough on a turf toe injury the past few games. Football is a violent sport, and injuries happen.

They just happen to some guys wayyyyyyy more than others.

The Panthers had a good RBBC with both Goings and Foster. Losing either one hurts a lot. THey have way less options now and Goings is going to need a rest if the Panthers get any kind of ground game going against Seattle. Whatever backup gets the carries is not going to scare anyone.

True, these types of injuries could happen to anyone, but that's three significant injuries for Foster in his brief career. Perhaps they are all freak injuries, but when a guy carries an injury history around, that's bound to be a factor in him getting a chance to be a fulltime back. This latest injury may cost Foster some sizable money. I think if he stayed healthy this year until the season completely ended, he may have shed the injury bug. But now the question marks are bound to be evident again.

please....did you see the play? that would have broken anyone's ankle....it was brutal.
Agreed, as soon as I saw it happen I was cringing and thinking "here we go...now we have to hear all the DeShaun haters for another off season".

ESPN STORY
It's the third season-ending injury in Foster's four-year career: He blew out his knee in a preseason game his rookie year, was healthy as Davis' understudy during Carolina's Super Bowl run two seasons ago, then missed 12 games in 2004 with a broken collarbone. But this latest injury could be the costliest for Foster, who is in the final year of his contract with Carolina. He chose not to negotiate with the Panthers until the season ended, and his recent play helped position him for a fat payday either in Carolina or elsewhere. But injury upon injury has created questions about his durability, and this latest setback won't help.
regardless of whether or not it would have broken anyones ankle or not is meaningless. It happens to him way too much. Injury prone is quite accurate here in a big way since if he is going to get hurt, he is going to be out for the season or more. He wont get the big money untli he survives a season or 2 w/o incident. Fair? Maybe not, but its what hes looking at.

FWIW. Not much info, except that Foster is looking at a 2-3 month recovery period - right through the FA period.----------------------------------Panthers | Team plans for Foster won't change; he's facing surgeryMon, 16 Jan 2006 20:17:42 -0800Pat Yasinskas, of the Charlotte Observer, reports Carolina Panthers RB DeShaun Foster (ankle) can become a free agent after the season and team officials have previously said they want to re-sign him. General manager Marty Hurney re-iterated that position Monday, Jan. 16, saying the injury (Foster's third major health issue in four years) does not change the team's thinking. Both head coach John Fox and Hurney said the injury is not career-threatening and the recovery period shouldn't stretch into next season. Hurney said the standard recovery time is two to three months. "I believe it will end up requiring surgery," Fox said. "It's an injury that we feel better about with surgery. It's a break that they'll get fixed up after Seattle. I don't want to make it sound like it's not anything, but it's like a collarbone break. You get the bone back together and it heals and you move on. It's not a joint injury."

If he does resign, the #2 RB in Carolina will have some nice value. The over/under on games played for Foster is like 8. I'll be picking up Shelton/Goings in the late rounds of my 2006 draft.
