**Detroit at Kansas City** (-4.5/52.5) Kickoff-Opening Night! (1 Viewer)

Sorry for dumb question. On that penalty, that would have been a sack and 4th down, why did KC get another shot on 3rd down? then, surprise surprise, they score. I don't understand that rule apparently.
You mean the Hutchinson hold where they completed the pass?

Gardner-Johnson should have intercepted the duck

no idea why Jerry Jacobs short armed that MVS reception

woulda shoulda coulda

gotta fight through this

I haven't gamethreaded here much. Not sure if it's a faux pas but..

Screw playing Chiefs RBs. Most other teams try to pound it in when they get down there. Even without Kelce, the playcalling is so creative and based on Mahomes passing. He's so quick twitch and the playcalling is so slanted to his ability to get nifty and find a guy.

Detroit accepted the penalty making it 3rd and 17.

Thank you, didn't even realize they declined. Poor choice, he almost always makes those plays
They didn't decline they took the penalty

I know it’s Mahomes

<blows out>

but this doesn’t seem like an improved defense at the moment

Note to BobbyLayne...wait until the end of the game for overreactions.
And wait for a few games to criticize the Lion's 2023 draft.

in Brad we trust

he’s stacked up 3 good ones in a row

they went low value positions (RB-LB-TE-S) in a draft where they only had 18 players with a first round grade

anyway sure, you’re correct, thanks guy

I mistyped in a hurry

Am I the only one concerned with Gibbs immediate value? He looks explosive but he's barely played, including sitting in most obvious passing downs, like this whole drive when you needed a big play.

It's one half of his first game so hope they are keeping things under wraps but if the second half is like the first I'm expecting a huge drop in drafts over the next two days.

pretty much being used exactly as Campbell said he would be

the goal is to have him peaking late

it’s a long season

first NFL game hostile environment just trying to manage his load

he’s not a big back, and they just went through several years of having Swift on the injury report (seemingly) every week

I think the Gibbs usage is primarily influenced by the plan to slow down KC and is very specific to this opponent and not indicative of his regular usage. If they get down 2 scores, plan A may be abandoned for a more passing attack with Gibbs.

Taken a few big hits today too.

Must be a pass pro issue.

Pretty entertaining first half. Mahomes is still the best player in the game. But I’m impressed by Detroit’s defense even though they gave up 14 points.

Your approximations of his usage were really, really optimistic. This shouldn't surprise you one bit. You got plenty of pushback about it. But he's still got time to live up to the usage hype. Let's see if they notice how the offense worked when he was off the field.

The chiefs defense is also somewhat underrated.

Surprise they have taken any deep shots to Gibbs as they eluded to this week.

Detroit Defense - overall not a terrible half but 1) gotta make plays when you have the opportunity, and 2) need to get home. Chiefs RT has been holding Hutch all night. Let’s get a stop to start the 2nd half.

Enough with the quarters-quarter half let’s go Cover zero and dial up some pressure.

Detroit Offense - need better spacing, let’s see some of those Ben Johnson intricate screens. enough with the ground and pound. lean on the rookies.

Marvin Jones is 33 years old. Targeted 5 times in the half. There are better options on practice squads. Like Robbie Chosen Anderson who caught a 75 yard bomb from none other than Baker Mayfield exactly a year ago. Marvin can't do that.

I was and remain wildly high on the player but you'll have to point out where I was overly optimistic about his usage this season.

I predicted high usage in the passing game, not high usage in general. Dont' think you read my takes correctly.

Detroit fumble and bad snap killed the first half.....need to generate a turnover and some sacks in the second half.

My KC RB frustrations aside, regarding the Gibbs stuff. This is more-or-less what I suspected would happen. Victory lapping after 30 minutes of a season though is a setup for a bad look.

Kid weighs 199 lbs and has not-much-experience pass protecting in the NFL. He'll figure it out and earn a bit more but I never understood how anyone thought he'd be a 15 carry guy or whatever.

Gibbs situation reminds me of the early rookie season Adrian Peterson usage. He looks electric ⚡

Be patient folks.

Also he is going to need to learn to avoid contact…
