***Detroit Tigers thread: 1st pick yet again, this is not fun*** (7 Viewers)

Anthony Gose stinks in CF, Twins should not have scored on that Sano hit.  Simple, fundamental baseball is something Gose and a few of these others do not understand.  One run here, one there, and you lose.  You have a guy making his MLB debut doing great work and you leave him hanging because you don't do simple things like hitting the cutoff man.

I'd sit Gose tomorrow, guy has his head up his ### a lot.  Gotta think Maybin gets the overwhelming majority of at bats when he comes back, Gose does not look like any kind of long-term solution.

Pretty good debut by Fulmer

5 IP on 93 pitches

2 runs, but only should have been one but Gose is ####

7 Hits, one extra base hit

4 K's, two on nasty sinking fastballs and swinging strikes

1 BB is a nice effort

He'll get another start IMO, he looked under control and he has some really good stuff.

Castellanos, like any good hitter, is a good fastball hitter.  He is hitting a lot less ground balls this year, those ground balls are now fly balls and line drives and his hard contact rate is up too.  Now that he's more comfortable adjusting to offspeed stuff it is becoming more difficult to get any fastball by him, he has elite fastballing hitting skills IMO.  That ball he hit tonight was hit a ton, and everything off his bat is sizzling.  This is what scouts and baseball people expected, he's growing each day as a hitter now.

Once he establishes that he can hit any fastball he's going to start getting a lot of stuff off the plate, then he needs to take the next step and start taking what the pitcher gives him.  After he does that, then he can start waiting on his pitch.  I really hope that is the end result, he's starting to look like the top ten prospect people thought he was gonna be.  Remember, he just turned 24.

Fulmers stuff looks like he would be a good closer.  Going one inning balls out not worrying about a quality start.

Nick has been solid with his glove.  He will never have great range, but it is his bat which will make or break him.

It is making him this year so far.   3 run shot ties the game. Got Pelfrey off the hook.

Pelfrey put on another 12 batters in 4 innings.   Tough be have success with a 2.5+ WHIP    How much longer can they keep trotting him out there?

More Big Nick homers please.

JZimm finishes April with the 4th lowest ERA among qualified starters since the pitching mound has been lowered.

Justin Wilson is terrific, love what I'm seeing from the Wilson brothers this year.  Collectively the bullpen had a 2.85 ERA in April, which is certainly a good start.

K-Rod settling in, helped by Sano admiring his hit at the plate and then making a horrible baserunning error.
Do you trust him? 2-3 batters ripped the ball.. Dozier hit a rocket before that for an out and again he not break 88 on any pitch today. Result was good but there has to be some concern.   V-Mart is swinging the bat like 2 years ago. Saw an interview with him and he said last year he was never able to drive and turn with his bag leg. With Nick raking this lineup is very difficult to get through.

Interesting about JZimm ...and the bullpen, too.  Now we just need to replace Pelfrey.

I like the idea of trying Iggy up top and seeing how that might develop.

I really wish they would move Nick up to the 5 spot.  Upton is a proven pro, but Nick is hitting the ball as good as anyone.

Nah leave him where he is until he does this for like 80 games.

Also had no idea Upton and Verlander got engaged, must make for a weird locker room dynamic.  Hopefully they locker close to each other.  :oldunsure:

After the last two months of last season, I really thought JV would become a pitcher and use his experience and talent to transition to a SP in his 30s.  Tonight showed he's not there yet, he still thinks he can overpower guys when he's trouble.  Pretty ####### stupid IMO, this is a guy who can be a HOF pitcher and earn this contract if he uses his head to pitch games.  Cleveland is not good, and even though he's always had trouble with them, there is no excuse for tonight.  Him using the long sleeve shirt excuse is about the biggest reach ever, not even sure what the hell that means.  If it's shtick, it's terrible.  If he was serious, that's worrisome.

Tough to understand his difference in velocity from start to start. First 2 starts he hit 96..last night it was 90-91 on his fastball. I have been ripping on Pelfrey but JVs ERA is a full run higher than Pelfrey's. "Nick the Stick" has been fun to watch. Looks like a totally different hitter this year at the plate.

Do not like JD in the 2 spot.

People have been saying this about him for two years now.  Problem is he is either too stubborn or dumb to learn to pitch differently.  However, he did tweet last night that he is going to dominate soon and he's "close" so as Carl Spackler says he's got that going for him.

Tigers can't beat the Indians, which I just don't understand.  Still can laugh at the Indians though, watch...

Nick the Stick up to .378  Nick defense seems improved this year as well.

Gose struggling to stay above the Mendoza line.  Gose looking feeble at the plate.  Hope Maybin can provide some punch when he returns.

Maybin would be another option to use in the 2 spot too so we can drop J.D. back down to 5th.  The problem with Gose is he is not an everyday player so when he plays everyday this is what you end up with.

Another base running gaffe last night too.  Good thing they stressed base running fundamentals in spring training this year - of course, Brad just shrugged his shoulders about it after the game because that's what Brad does so I am sure things won't change.

If Brad does not care about dumb mistakes, why would the players? This team is capable of winning, but there needs to be a different culture.

Something needs to be done.  Ausmus should have been gone at the end of last season.  He was given another chance and at this point he has done nothing to show we should continue with this experiment.   This team is just painful to watch.

Not starting JD vs a LH pitcher is extremely odd.  If he was gonna get a day off, why not vs the next righty?

Part of it is on Ausmus, he's just not a good manager yet.  But the pitching is pretty awful so far and tonight a billion dollars worth of hitting got one hit off Hamels.  If Norris and Fulmer don't turn into at least average MLB starters this year, I don't think there is much hope.  Pelfrey is bad, JV is a hard head, Anibal is walking everyone, and the 5th starter is unknown week to week.  JZimm pitched well enough to win tonight, not his fault.

Ausmus's decision making skills are only part of the problem.  He is not terrible, maybe in the average range or just below.  I think his biggest downfall is he is just too lack adaisical.  I know a rah-rah Harbaugh type is much much more valueable at the high school/college level, but even at the pro level an occasional boot in the ### or positive motivation can go a long way in instilling the proper attitude in the clubhouse.   A lot of the base running errors and other mistakes are because of a lack of focus.  Gose could use a kick in the butt on occasion. A little more enthusiasm in the dugout would be nice.  I really don't know how to fix the SP rotation.  But damn it, there was no excuse for how terrible last year's team was, and I see this year is headed in the same direction.  It won't happen soon, but it needs to if we want to have any hope this year.

Pudge threw out first pitch today and in booth with Tigers shirt even though he's a Rangers employee.  Class act, outside of never taking a walk, Pudge.

What a mess.  They have to go to DC and Baltimore next week, they might not win again until June.

I'll be at all three Nats games, and at least one in Baltimore to see this ####show up close.

Ausmus never seems to be proactive or prepared when it comes to in-game decisions, especially with the starting pitcher. Today was a perfect example. Pelfrey has struggled all season. After the first 2 HRs today, he was pretty good through 5 innings and he had a low pitch count. Regardless, right after the 5th, Ausmus should have been prepared to take him out at the first sign of trouble (after the first 2 batters reached base), which means he should have never pitched to Beltre. Get him out up 5-2 and even with the 2 baserunners, Pelfrey would probably feel pretty good about his performance. But Ausmus leaves him in too long and he does that way too much. Just terrible managing.

Ausmus is a train wreck. This team has talent but he mismanages the rotation, the bullpen, the bases and lets his guys get off point as soon as they get behind. I thought I disliked Smokey but at least you knew what he was doing day to day even if you hated it.
