***Detroit Tigers thread: 1st pick yet again, this is not fun*** (4 Viewers)

Glad the Sux fans are here now. We can talk about them getting their asses swept when they had Sale on the mound for one of the 3 games.
What was the betting line on Pelfrey vs Sale?  I had that penciled in as a loss before it started.

It looks like this team is coming together, but they have disappointed for the last couple of seasons.   So will temper ethusiasm until they can get solidly over .500.

Fulmer is well ahead of The Birds rookie pace.  Bird was 2-1 in May..then went 6-0 in June.

What is amazing is that the Bird had 20 complete games his rookie year..one was 11 innings.  How the game has changed...

The bird was one of the best baseball stories ever, I wonder where he is today

I don't get the doom and gloom locally with this franchise.  Last week they had a special on 97.1 asking which Detroit pro franchise had the brightest near-term future.  The popular answer was the Pistons for most bright, and Tigers for least.  That makes zero sense and shows what a bunch of morons are out there.  The Pistons aren't winning #### without elite talent, for which they have one borderline-elite player.  They might get to 50 wins and get to the conference finals one year, but that's about it.  They are the only franchise in the last 40 years in the NBA who has won even one title without a past, present, or future MVP.  They did it three times so asking for a 4th seems impossible.

The Tigers on the other hand have two of the best players in baseball north of 30 in Cabrera and Verlander, some very good vets in VMART, JZimm, and Kinsler and JUP who is just entering his prime and should be a long-term producer.  But what is really exciting is the young pieces on the team.

-Castellanos is 24 and looks like a legit all-star caliber bat.

-James McCann is going to be 26 next week and looks like one of teh best defensive catchers in baseball who should be a .250 type hitter with some good pop

-Jose Iglesias, 26, a defensive-oriented player who locks down the left side and has a .280 career average.

-Michael Fulmer, 23, a lower end top 100 prospect who looks like he might be at least a middle of the rotation gem, and maybe a #2.

-Matt Boyd, 25, a 6th round pick who is not heralded but dominated every level of the minors before a few rough call-ups.  He's settling down and could be a back of the rotation guy

-Daniel Norris, 23, the highest ranked pitching prospect since Justin Verlander and a possible ace.  Has scuffled with some injuries but he's back on track now and should be the best arm in the entire franchise.

-In the minors Christin Stewart is turning heads and is a bat-first corner OFer that should be ready next summer.  Jimenez who has been mentioned, as well as the less mentioned Beau Burrows, are electric arms.  Moya and Mike Gerber are good organizational depth that should be good bench/platoon options, and JaCoby Jones who has the physical tools to be special...probably at 3B.

If I had to bet on who wins a title in the next five years and my choices are the Pistons or Tigers, I'm all in on the Tigers.  There are a lot of good pieces here and as the 2013 Red Sox, 2015 Royals, and pretty much any of those Cardinals teams have shown...you just need pieces and to get to the postseason and then play your best.  Oh, and not have 7-9 days off between the ALCS and WS.

I agree.  The Tigers have a ton of potential.  But then they go and get shut out.   Ugh.  They are a frustrating bunch.

FWIW JUP had a 49 game streak last year where he hit .182.  The swinging at bad pitches part of his game is concerning, but he's about to get on track IMO.

They won the division two years ago.  Short memory?
The only thing I remember is the team was the clear preseason favorite to win it all and went 0-4 in the playoffs including blowing a three run lead in the ninth.  I am not going to call that a success.
Tigers won 0 division titles between 1987 and 2011, you sound like a spoiled fan or someone that doesn't appreciate how hard it is to get to the postseason in baseball.  Ask Cubs, Padres, Orioles, Rockies, or Astros fans about four straight division titles and four series wins.   And they weren't clear favorites at all.

Also it was three games not four, and 8th inning not 9th.

The Tigers added Price.  That team should have done better.

Jiminez pitched his 3rd game for Erie Saturday, perfect inning with 2 strikeouts.

So far, he has pitched 3 games, 3 innings, given up 1 hit, no runs, no walks, WHIP of 0.33, with 7 strikeouts.

The domination continues.
Joe Jiminez update:

In his 4th game for Erie, he pitched 1 inning, allowed no runs, 1 hit, no walks, and 3 strikeouts.

So far, 4 games, 4 innings, no runs, 2 hits, no walks, and 10 (TEN) strikeouts.

Just a matter of time fellas.

One of only three in the Tigers organization in the top 100 Baseball America list of top 100 RHPs.  He's 72, Burrows at 44, Fulmer at 10.

good article on Tigers past drafts

If you don't want to be depressed, stop looking before 2004.  Randy Smith was quite possibly the worst GM in not only franchise history, but in baseball history.   For reference, he currently is the VP of player development and international scouting for the Padres.  lololololol
Add in Matt Millen and Detroit has had the worst GMs in NFL and MLB history.

Did DD get a lengthy timeout or something by our wonderful mods.  I know I was threatened with a permaban a few months back for calling stupid posts stupid.

I hope that jerkoff is banned forever
If only.  That is my biggest beef with this place. Not enough Bannings.   And they should be public and put on display as an example.  Make FBG great again!

Joe Jiminez update: Saturday, another scoreless inning, no hits, 1 walk, 1 strikeout. In his 5 games at AA Erie, 5 innings, no runs, 2 hits, 1 walk, 11 strikeouts.

Can you tell I'm a big fan?

His numbers could line up with Sweet Lou's, who is still one of the biggest snubs.
Should surpass Lou in all categories when all is said and done.  Lou played 19 seasons. This is Kinslers 11th.

Not looking at the stats right now, but Average is almost identical.  I doubt if Kinsler passes Lou in hits or RBI's unless he is productive to 40 years old.  Probably pass him in HR's in a couple years.

You are right..Lou started at 19, Kinsler at 24.  If Kinsler plays to the same age as Lou he will have five less seasons.  I do think his per season numbers will be a bit better though.

Greene has been great in the bullpen.  It would be nice if we could keep him there, but Pelfrey is almost to the point of being unstartable.  Not terrible, but not good.

I'd keep Greene there.  Anibal is still an option to go back to the rotation, and Norris has pitched better of late in Toledo.  Pelfrey has allowed two or less earned runs in 4 of his last 6 games, and he allowed three Friday and two of those belonged to Justin Upton.
