In 1994 the Los Angeles Rams had just finished a miserable season. Their record was 4-12, last in the division, and 9 games behind the division winner. It was in that awful season that Isaac Bruce got his first NFL catch for the Rams.
In 2005 the New Orleans Saints had just finished a miserable season. Their record was 3-13, last in the division, and 8 games behind the division winner. It was in that awful season that Devery Henderson got his first NFL catch for the Saints.
After 1994 the Rams fired their HC of 8 years, Chuck Knox (total includes 2 tours of duty), and replaced Knox with Rich Brooks who had no previous NFL head coaching experience.
After 2005 the Saints fired their HC of 6 years, Jim Haslett, and replaced Haslett with Sean Payton who had no previous NFL head coaching experience.
The Rams played their 1994 games in Anaheim and had among the lowest attendance in the league.
Due to Hurricane Katrina, the Saints played their 2005 games in both San Antonio and Baton Rouge and had the 2nd-lowest average attendance in the league.
In 1995 the Rams moved to St Louis and the newly built Trans World Dome where they played before full crowds.
In 2006 the Saints move back to New Orleans and the newly renovated Superdome where they should play before full crowds.
Hoping to turn things around for the Rams in 1995 was steady but unspectacular QB Chris Miller, who a year earlier had replaced a strong armed but inconsistent QB from Purdue, Jim Everett. The Rams were the second team Miller had played on.
Hoping to turn things around for the Saints in 2006 will be steady but unspectacular QB Drew Brees from Purdue, who is replacing the strong armed but inconsistent Aaron Brooks. The Saints are the second team Brees has played on.
Miller had one Pro Bowl appearance before going to the Rams, in 1991.
Brees has had one Pro Bowl appearance before going to the Saints, in 2004.
Isaac Bruce was born in 1972 and attended college at a southern school (Memphis).
Devery Henderson was born in 1982 and attended college at a southern school (LSU).
Isaac Bruce was drafted in the 2nd round of the 1994 draft.
Devery Henderson was drafted in the 2nd round of the 2004 draft.
Isaac Bruce was the 2nd WR taken in the round and the 6th WR overall.
Devery Henderson was the 1st WR taken in the round and the 8th WR overall.
By the way, the 1st RB taken in round one of 1994 was Marshall Faulk.
Guess what? The 1st RB taken in round one of 2004 was Steven Jackson, who replaced Marshall Faulk.
In his first year (1994) Isaac Bruce was 21-272-3, ranking him 75th among WRs according to FBG player pages.
In his first year (2005), Devery Henderson was 22-343-3, ranking him 75th among WRs according to FBG player pages (he was not active his rookie year, 2004)
In 1994, the Rams' leading WR in catches, yards, and TDs was Flipper Anderson, a speedy and talented 2nd rounder in his 7th year who was generally considered to have not lived up to his level of talent (despite setting an NFL record with 336 yards receiving in one game, he never had more than 51 catches or 7 TDs in a season).
In 2005, the Saints' leading WR in catches, yards, and TDs was Donte Stallworth, a speedy and talented 1st rounder in his 4th year who has generally been considered to have not lived up to his level of talent.
Anderson had 945 yards and 5 TDs in 1994.
Stallworth had 945 yards and 7 TDs in 2005.
In 1994, the Rams' other WR was Jesse Hester (or JH, born on January 16), an aging vet in his 9th year (would have been his 10th, but he missed 1989).
In 2005, the Saints' other WR was Joe Horn (or JH, born on January 21), an aging vet in his 10th year.
In 1994, JH had 644 yards and 3 TDs. His catch total of 45 was down from his career high just the year before.
In 2005, JH had 654 yards and 1 TD. His catch total of 49 was down from his career high just the year before. His yards and TDs the year before were also career highs.
In 1994, Anderson and Hester combined for 1589 yards and 8 TDs with Chris Miller and Chris Chandler dividing the pass attempts 317-176.
In 2005, Stallworth and Horn combined for 1599 yards and 8 TDs with Aaron Brooks and Todd Bouman dividing the pass attempts 421-122.
Flipper Anderson left the Rams as a FA for Indianapolis before the 1995 season, opening the door for Isaac Bruce to become the new speed WR starter in his 2nd year of playing time.
Donte Stallworth was traded by the Saints to Philadelphia before the 2006 season, opening the door for Devery Henderson to become the new speed WR starter in his 2nd year of playing time.
Jesse Hester continued his decline in 1995 and retired after that season at age 32.
What about Joe Horn in 2006 at age 34?
Isaac Bruce was 119-1781-13 in 1995, ranking him 2nd among WRs according to FBG player pages, and has gone on to have a great career.
And what about Devery Henderson in 2006?
