Devin Hester - Could he become a true FF WR (1 Viewer)

We all know that Hester is one of, if not the, most amazing special teams players we've seen in our lifetime. And i know sometimes the special teams to WR transition just doesn't work (Dante Hall, Desmond Howard, etc.) But for some reason, when you watch Hester on the field, he seems like he COULD be a true starting WR. He has great hands, crazy speed, and his vision and cutting ability is off the hook. Now I don't know how good his route running is, but would have to assume that's something he can learn. The Bears passing game has been horrible, check that, the entire offense has been horrible. After watching Hester make that long TD catch last week, it seems the coaches may want to start using him. This is pure speculation, I haven't read that anywhere. But if you were coaching the Bears, wouldn't you try to get him more involved? I decided to pick him up in 4 dynasty leagues this week. I figure his upside is just too good over a 4th QB, 2nd K, or a 6th string WR that wasn't doing anything on my bench anyway. Thoughts? :bag:

I think it won't happen. 1. They have Berrian, Clayton, and Mushin. 2. They have Olsen. 3. Their Oline stinks. 4. So does their QB. 5. So does the playcalling.

Maybe if the DC and special teams coach is the same moron.

Special Teams: Let's keep kicking to Hester.

DC: Let's cover Hester with a LB.

this year is more of a longshot, although my league rewards points for special teams touchdowns so that does increase the value of bush, leon washington, steve smith, hester, etc ... i imagine he'll have more value in the WR department next yr when moose's old butt is gone and he's had some more time to learn the position

he does? really I am asking, I thought everything I read said his hands were very questionable....

It's his best shot, and in a league that includes ST yards and points, he should be rostered, but I wouldn't expect much offensively. I think he's a guy without a position.

Couldn't really play CB or WR in college with any amount of proficiency...

Don't see him suddenly being able to run proper routes and catch like a true WR. Could he be used as a #4 or #5 to run the Wheel/Fly pattern(s) and stretch the defense? Sure, that is very much his skill set...absolute freakish straight line speed and hands that would make guys like Jett and Nehemiah blush. Every now and again, though, he'll bust coverage and those hands will manage to hold onto the football just like the squirrel finding that proverbial nut. Beyond that and the occassional reverse I just do not see Hester making an impact as a down in and out WR.

Route Running is not something you just learn.

There are tons of WRs in the NFL who have speed, can cut, catch, etc. That only gets you so far. There are not too many good route runing WRs in the NFL. That is obvious.

Bottom line- Hester is good for 2-3 long highlight TDs per season. He will never be more than a slot guy catching occasional short slants or long bombs.

Devon Devin Hester - Could he become a true FF WR, I think its possible. Let's discuss!
Fixed :goodposting: BTW - I agree with pretty much everyone here. He is no more than a highlight WR. He will only be good if you happen to have him in one of the three weeks he has a huge TD.

I own Hester in a return league where he is WR7. He couldn't be more streaky (0/35/2/38/2/43) but when your high is that high it's bearable.

Of course, I'd love for him to supplement those sporadic return points with more involvement in the passing game.

Only problem is I don't think the Bears staff wants to tire him out on offense and impact his effectiveness on returns.

Now, when teams aren't kicking to Hester, you'd think they counter that by having him run a few end arounds or quick screens.

BTW, folks who are clamoring "Why do you kick to Hester!!??" did you notice in the last 3 games this was the oppositions outcome:

Vikings (Kick to Hester) - WIN

Packers (Don't Kick) - LOSS

Lions (Kick to Hester) - WIN

So while Hester might make the highlights, I think that by sacrificing field position so consistently by not kicking to Hester, teams are putting themselves into scenarios where the Bears are more likely to score over & over, as opposed to the 8-9% chance Hester has of returning a TD.

I'd say that a team, even the Bears, has a higher than 10% chance of scoring if their starting field position is the 40 yd line.

The Bears need to design a play where Hester lines up 20-30 yards behind Griese. Griese hikes ball turns around and throws the ball as high as possible in the air to mock a punt return. Hester would gain more than a Cedric Benson run.

I guess most of your leagues don't give points for his return TDs. I thought that was more common than not. In our league that gives points for the return TDs, but nothing for return yards, he is already 41st among WRs, which is deserving of a roster spot in most leagues. He's tied or ahead of Colston, Northcutt, Hilliard, Calvin Johnson, Michael Jenkins, James Jones, Muhammed, etc.
