Dez's Digital Nomad Thread: Colombia (1 Viewer)

I've been talking with 30-year old Kath for about 3 weeks, and on Wednesday we decided to get together Thursday night for dinner. She said she might have class that evening but wasn't sure. Thursday noon we exchanged some messages and I asked her if she knew about class yet. She said not yet, but she didn't think she had it. Haven't heard from her since (today is Saturday). I wasn't upset because I was tired from the night before with Sophie, but I was a little disappointed because Kath is a little older and seemed classier than that.

I've also been talking to 21-year old Lisca for about a week. She just broken up with her boyfriend a month and is looking for quimica with someone. It turns out she works right around the corner from where I'm staying, and we decided to meet up Friday morning before she started work for the day. We messaged all week, confirmed everything, then Friday rolled around and... nothing. Our conversation had sort of implied hooking up so maybe she got cold feet or something.

Two bad days in a row but overall things are going well enough that I'm not too upset. I just still find it so weird. I went to dinner with Sara B. last night and told her about both girls and she said she doesn't really get it either.
 
Saturday morning was able to meet up with 20-year old Kathe. The idea was to get together in the morning before she had to go to work at 1pm. She showed up at the mall at 9am, and I have to say I was a bit disappointed. Her pictures were gorgeous, but in person she didn't look nearly the same. We got something to eat and walked around a bit, then we walked around the area near my apartment. By the time we got back to my apartment it was 11am and she said she had to leave at 11:30. I told her I thought she was leaving straight for work from my place but she said she had left her work shirt at home and they don't let you in without it. It had taken her 50 min to get from her apartment to the mall, and her work was relatively closer to me, so I didn't have a lot of hope that she was going to make it to work on time. So we made out on the couch for a bit, some grinding, etc. then called an Uber to bring her home. By the time one accepted the trip and got to my place through the traffic it was nearly 12pm and she was really stressing. I haven't heard from her since and I'm afraid to write to her for fear of being told she lost her job or something.
 
Late Saturday afternoon Instagram Model arrived on a flight from Quito, as did my other friend from Barranquilla. Saturday was dia de amor y amistad in Colombia and the three of us went down to Andres Carne de Res in the Zona T bar/restaurant district. We had to wait forever to get a table, but finally did and had fun. They always play good music in there so it was a good time and good food. After that we went walking around the Zona T and finally decided on a bar to have a couple of drinks. We headed home early but it was fun.

Sunday morning we all woke up, went to breakfast, and then my friend went off to meet her friends for the Dua Lipa concert. Instagram Model and I made our way down to La Candelaria and Bolivar Plaza (pics posted previously), as it was her first time in Bogota. After that we walked to the base of Monserrate, which is a religious site on top of one of the mountains overlooking Bogota. We took the cable car up and hung out around there a while then got in line to come back down as the sun was setting. It's colder up there as it is, then with the sun down it got pretty chilly. There was a looong line to get back down the mountain so we were pretty well cold and tired by the time we did. We took an Uber back to the mall, got some dinner, then headed back to the apartment. She was busy getting her stuff ready to leave for Madrid in the morning, and then a little while later my friend came back from the concert. Monday morning they both headed to the airport. So no playtime with IG Model, but honestly I didn't really expect any. But it was fun hanging out with the two of them for the weekend.

We kept talking and a little while later she said so you like colageno, and I replied I love it.

After we finished up I asked her what she wanted to do. She said what do you suggest and I said we could go back to the apartment and watch a movie. She gave me a face and said something like calm down man. I said well then let's walk around a bit more. We made our way down to the first floor and I said what do you want to do? She said all the stores are closing (I think it was a little after 9pm) and I said well let's go back and watch a movie, and this time she agreed. We got back to the apartment, sat on the couch and put on a movie. After a while she asked if I was cold, and I said yes I am, come over here. So she moved over and put her head on my chest and I put my arm around her. Later on she said she wanted to lay down so we laid down on the couch and continued the movie. At one slow point she turned all the way around towards me and we started kissing. Man, she has the best lips :wub:. We did that a few times, fast forward to the end of the movie and we started making out, got her bra off (those things are very nice too!) and she asked if I wanted to have sex with her. I said yes of course and she replied that she didn't want to because her "days" had just ended the day before and she wanted to wait:sadbanana:. We continued making out and touching, I got a reaaally nice bj, and then we called it a night. She told me that she would be really horny in 4 days, so we made plans to get together again Monday. Called her an Uber home, and got in bed at 2am only to wake up again right before my 6am alarm. But I'm not complaining! Almost two weeks in and haven't happy pickled yet, but the opportunities are there and the dam is about to burst.

How could I give this up for all the money and security in the world? :cry:

Had my follow up date with Sophie Monday night. Met up with her over at the mall about 8pm. We got some food and she asked what I'd been doing before that. I told her there were a couple of football games on and I was watching those. She said that she didn't understand American football and I said well luckily there's a game so I can explain it to you. We finished eating and walked back to the apartment. I explained the basics to her and she seemed to catch on. We watched until the late game was over, then started making out on the couch. We went back to the bedroom, yadda yadda yadda... :pickle:. Fell asleep for a while then she went home around midnight.
 
Kinda doing this next year, spending the month of May in Key West. Totally jacked for it already.

If I can do a good job it's something I'd like to do like once a year. Assuming the boss and finances are agreeable.
 
Tuesday (last night) I was supposed to see 21-year old Luciana. We had matched when I was here last time, she'd acted very interested, then ghosted me. I wrote to her out of the blue last week, she seemed happy to hear from me, she apologized for what happened, and we made these plans for Tuesday. Well Tuesday rolled around and yep, ghosted again :shrug:.

20-year old Hilary wrote to me out of the blue saying she wanted to see me. I guess she wasn't mad anymore. Since my plans had fallen through I said come on over. She showed up about 7pm and we went walking to grab a pizza. She looked good, love that bod. We ate then walked back to the apartment. She couldn't find anything to watch and I said how about a porno? She said ok, I pulled out my laptop, and we watched a video. It seemed to get her going, we started making out, then went back to the room. Reminder that she's a virgin so we did a lot of other stuff and it was pretty fun. Then I was reminded that she is a grade A clinger. It was 10:30pm and she said it was too late to go home that she was going to stay here. I said it's not too late, and I have to get up early so you should go home. She said you can get up early and I'll keep sleeping. So that's what happened. The next morning I got up and got ready and started working at 7am. She finally got up about 8am and wouldn't leave me alone until I finally got her to leave around noon. She did cook me some lunch and gave me a nice bj so I guess it wasn't all bad. But man, she can be really annoying. Gonna do my best to avoid her the rest of the trip.

Spoke with the hiring manager for a while, and everything worked out better than I could have hoped. No issue with the remote work (we'll see how it goes in practice), keep the same amount of vacation as I have now, and also the opportunity for additional work travel all over the world on the company dime.

Just booked the tickets for me and the family for our Bogota trip, Nov 5 through the 13th. Wife will be down there for a week at her conference before we arrive. Flight back is through Panama so we can visit my SIL for 2 days.

So, what's the best apps to meet these ladies???

Or who are the 5 you're most curious about? Ultimately they all have relatively the same look....dark skin, dark eyes, long straight black hair...exactly what you'd think a Colombian girl would look like.
 
I realized I hadn't given an update on Raquel. She's the one I hit it off with the back half of my last trip here, 27-years old in an open relationship. The story goes that during the pandemic she got stuck in Mexico for several months, and stayed with some older couple that she became friends with. When I was here in June I told her I'd probably be back in Sep and Oct, and she told me she might be visiting them in Sep but should be back in Oct. Anyway she was making plans to go visit and the lady told her that she was going to Venezuela for her business (not sure what she does in Mexico but she was going to Venezuela to do some paperwork, set up vendors/buyers, etc.) and invited Raquel along. So she's been in Venezuela since Aug and doesn't seem to have an idea when she's coming back. I don't know if it's b.s. or not, and I've decided not to worry about trying to figure out if it is. As I've commented before, things down here are always so strange and fluid, even the things that don't add up or make any sense at all have the same chance of being true as not. She suggested something about me coming to visit them there so maybe it's true. But at this point I'm guessing I won't see her this trip, which is a shame.

As far as main characters, I've come up with my list of 5:

Vanessa - a big part of my first two trips and provided some drama
Sara B. - involved in 3/4 of my trips so far and ever present
Instagram Model - involved in half my trips to this point, spent two weekends together
Hilary - involved in my last two trips and provided some drama
Raquel - probably my biggest romantic connection up to this point

Colombia has always been on my radar because I used to love cocaine but I have learned they also have some incredible mountains, jungles, and beaches. And the woman don't look too shabby either.

Is Spanish a must in order to talk to the locals or can you get by with basic Spanglish and Google Translate? Have you ever been to Gringo Tuesdays? A long time ago I liked some Facebook page related to that and their updates always makes me want to visit. I have had this thread bookmarked for a long time, I will go back and read through it before asking anymore questions that have probably already been answered.

Colombia is one of the most diverse countries in the world, all in just ~twice the size of Texas. It's really a beautiful country with wonderful people. And yeah, the women aren't too shabby either ;) .

A lot of people come here not knowing Spanish, but I don't really know how they get by. Bogota is your best bet to find people who speak English, other than very touristy places, but there aren't necessarily that many. But I'd say you can probably get by with basic Spanglish and Google Translate. Just make sure you buy a SIM card so you can use Google Translate and Uber while out and about.

Since you said you're going to read the thread, you'll see that I have gone to Gringo Tuesdays a couple of times. It's a really great idea and a pretty good time.

I don't see anything wrong with those links :shrug: .
 
I have an engineer who works for me that is from Cali Colombia and visits regularly. She swears it's no longer dominated by cartels and isnan awesome place to live. She knows I travel a lot and keeps telling me I need to go.

Before hiring her, I did some work with a company in Miami where the owner was from Colombia as well. He was building a house in Medellin that was simply amazing. I meet up with him couple of weeks ago and he had an offdee 8.5 on each arm (turned out to be his daughters). I asked him about his house and he sent me the address and said "free to stay anytime you want". Pretty sure that goes against by fed employee ethics training but maybe when I retire in 15 years... Lol

I am new to the thread, have read a few random posts here and there. I've been scarce from the forums for a few years and was only drawn back in recently because of wikkid's passing, offdee's moving thread, and the start of the football season. Out of respect I wasn't going to ask about the private group when it was mentioned the other day since I haven't contributed anything but offdee's ratings piqued my interest and then the other guy asking about an invite today I kind of forgot my manners.

I do look forward to reading the thread though to see how the work/life/travel balance and logistics have worked out for you as well as the short term expat experience in South America. I should be at a point in 2023 where either one or two 1-3 month trips are realistic and Peru, Colombia, and Mexico are the leading candidates in that order as of now. Not so much the digital nomad thing though as that isn't really an option currently, more of a sabbatical.

Looking forward to your thread! I like your short list. Peru would be a great place to spend that time, and I'm thinking of including Lima in my rotation at some point. Have you traveled to South America before? If not, then I definitely think Peru should be your first stop.
 
Man, the time flies. It's been an uneventful 8 days, ever since Hilary left last Wednesday. Was content to just watch football all last weekend, but now getting a bit anxious to get something going. Even Sara B. cancelled on me the last couple of days (she was going to meet me for dinner after her swimming class next door but ended up not going either day). I did go to dinner one night last week with the lady who owns the apartment I stay in when in Barranquilla (she and her husband live in Bogota). Was supposed to meet up with 23-year old Fabiana this evening but she told me earlier today that she has to work. Supposed to see my friend Dayana tomorrow and a new girl for lunch Saturday but we'll see what happens. It's been almost three weeks since I've seen Mara and I've been trying to pin her down but no luck. Thought there was some good potential there, but maybe I read it wrong. Always working the waiver wire and still have some other possibilities, but hopefully something breaks soon.

Ah, I must have missed that back at the beginning. I've been following this thread for a while and am "a FBG in good standing", but I definitely have not contributed in this thread and haven't really felt as though I had something witty or insightful to add. South American women must be the best...I married one! And she has floated the idea of us visiting Colombia or Peru a few times. We just haven't made it happen. So it's quite interesting hearing about your extended work stays there. Carry on.

Well my mood is a bit down the last couple of days for the first time this trip. It's been 9 days since I had a real date, and I'm getting tired trying to chase some of these chicas down. I really thought I would have seen Mara again by now but she just sort keeps ignoring the question. There are others that I'm writing to but just can't get any of them to commit to getting together.

Even my friend Dayana was giving me a hard time yesterday. The last time I was here, the first time we were going to get together she canceled on me because I didn't confirm the day before and she ended up traveling. So yesterday I sent her a message confirming for today and she said what time and where? I said I don't know what do you think, and she said I thought you would have planned this out. I said my only plan was to get together and see you, what about Gran Estacion Mall since we're both close and I get off work at 4pm so when can you? She said it doesn't seem like you have a good plan, you said you wanted to get together but you don't know where or when. I told her just forget it then and stopped writing to her.

Still supposedly have that lunch date tomorrow with 21-year old Paula, guess I better confirm with her today.

Going to Cartagena next weekend to visit my friend and her family there, so really looking forward to that.

Well I do to a point, but it does get exhausting. Especially when nothing is panning out.

Dayana did write to me this morning to apologize and said she's in a rough patch right now. I wrote back to her but (surprise!) no response.

Paula confirmed for Saturday so hope springs eternal.

Like I told someone in a PM recently, sometimes it feels like I'm talking to myself in here and I have no idea how many people are following along or are interested. So a comment or even just a like would help.

She's from Brazil. but she also speaks Spanish pretty well. I probably wouldn't go to Columbia without either knowing the language myself or travelling with someone who does.

Ahh ok, that's not too far from here and a straight shot from the airport, almost right next to the U.S. embassy. I think Hilary lives right around there too.
