DI Jukebox Draft (66-15)- Listen up (1 Viewer)

10.7 "A Million Miles Away" - The Plimsouls (1982)

1982 was the year of the Valley girl. High quality film, even better soundtrack. This was a gem off the soundtrack - even more jukebox-worthy since it played during the movie in the bar scene.

10.7 "Metal Health (Bang Your Head)" - Quiet Riot (1983)

Through the late '70s/early '80s, metal was on life support beyond a handful of big groups/albums (won't spotlight). Then after founding member Randy Rhoads died, these guys jumped out of the LA club scene in '83 and sparked a huge resurgence of metal. Fortunately, QR didn't last long, but their legacy lives on. And this song still kicks ###.

10.23A: "Tighten Up" Black Keys (2010) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mpaPBCBjSVc

10.23B: "Hold On" Alabama Shakes (2013) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Le-3MIBxQTw
So, are we free-for-all on Round 11?
I think so. I'll just take one for now, nobody else seems to want.

11.21a Kashmir, Led Zeppelin 1975
I took Tighten Up.

I could have sworn that someone took Kashmir early, but didn't see it in the ultra mix. Weird. If that's the case, I am kicking myself for not snagging it.

There was a troll that came in the thread spouting out songs, and Kashmir was one of them.

I'm sorry. I looked at the draft by year and didn't see it. I'll re-pick my 10.23A

11.22b Buick MacKane - T. Rex - 1972 - The Slider
That's three T. Rex songs taken in this draft. Good to see recognition for a long underappreciated band.
Yeah, I got to Marc Bolan late in this draft. I'm an early seventies glam rocker and unabashed about it. I loved both The Slider and Electric Warrior in my twenties. I adore T. Rex. Hell, even the Power Station covered him. I could have taken something off of Tanx, but the riff from Buick and Cadillac were the deciding factors, and I've been listening to more Buick than Cadillac lately.

Might be sarcasm. MIght be genuine. But I  T. Rex, so what's a boy to do with a jukebox mix?

Maybe not among us nerds here, but I think in the general population they don't get the respect they deserve.

I was reading on some random message board that some kid in England had his stolen guitar. It was pretty cool seeing them figure it out.

Sorry this is so early West Coasters, but it;s my prep and only chance to post.

These are two of my all time favorite American artists so I need to get something on the list from both. These songs speak for themselves and are highly jukeboxable.

11.4

1975 Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band Thunder Road

11.27

1977- Jackson Brown Running on Empty

11.13a - Bobby Brown - "My Prerogative" (1988)

Officially cornering the market on post-New Edition new jack with this and "Poison" back-to-back for '88 and '89.

Gonna hold my next pick til later today. Not sure where to go yet. I've only drafted 1 song after 1996, apparently.

1966 - The Supremes - "You Keep Me Hangin' On"

1967 - Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell - "Ain't No Mountain High Enough"

1968 - The Jimi Hendrix Experience - "All Along the Watchtower"

1970 - Toots & The Maytals - "Pressure Drop"

1971 - Bill Withers - "Ain't No Sunshine"

1972 - Stevie Wonder - "Superstition"

1977 - Bob Marley - "One Love/People Get Ready"

1978 - Earth, Wind & Fire - "September"

1983 - Lionel Richie - "All Night Long (All Night)"

1984 - Billy Ocean - "Caribbean Queen (No More Love on the Run)"

1987 - Eric B & Rakim - "I Ain't No Joke"

1988 - Bobby Brown - "My Prerogative"

1989 - Bell Biv Devoe - "Poison"

1990 - A Tribe Called Quest - "Can I Kick It?"

1992 - Mary J. Blige - "Real Love"

1994 - Aaliyah - "Back and Forth (feat. R. Kelly)"

1995 - Mobb Deep - "Shook Ones (Pt. II)"

1996 - Fugees - "No Woman No Cry"

2000 - OutKast - "B.O.B."

11.26 Sarah McLachlan, "Into the Fire" (1992)

One of harder-rocking hits before she turned to (to me) less interesting ballads in her later career development. The minor-key, unobtrusive guitar riffing in the background provides excellent atmosphere as does a very quiet Hammond organ, but the song is driven forward by a relentless, unpredictably metered bass line. McLachlan's soaring vocals are gorgeous. As a bonus, she's one of those artists who can double herself on the backing parts without sounding like exactly the same person.

11.xx Goo Goo Dolls, "Slide" (1998)

One of the few bands ever hailing from Buffalo makes my list with a simultaneously beautiful and strongly charged take on a young Catholic girl's decision about an unwed pregnancy. The song is excellently produced, as the bass line is clearly discernible despite what I believe are four guitar parts and an organ, and the vocals are split well among the two principals. GGD will always be remembered for their two monster hits, but this is a faaaaaar better song with just as much resonance.

Well OK then.

Back to the days when the Clintons were popular...

The schtick isn't flying here. Respect the draft.
Zamboni, I haven't drafted a single song that I really didn't like. Every song selected is not only owned by me but often in my playlist.

did you make a 10th round choice
No, I guess not. I'm a mess this AM. I walked into this huge pile of #### as one of the kids on my caseload was thrown out of 2 basketball games last night, threatened several staff members and now mom wants to sue because he is being banned from future athletic events. What a pain in the ### this whole family is.Should I pick round 10 today or did I jump the gun on round 11?!

guess I am judging that on us nerds and also bands I like citing them as influences

http://www.mylespaul.com/forums/vintage-les-pauls/352625-possible-58-59-les-paul-no-serial-no.htmlCool read about the guitar being found. Hopefully the kid didn't delete stuff once he verified what he had. It was a cool read a few months back.
Love this thread so far. Cool dudes.
It's a pretty fascinating read. Something to pass the time today I guess.
Like I said, they may have purged stuff to avoid law suits, but it was the guitar imo. I saw all the pics and markings. The funny thing is I found that in my search for pictures of the missing Funk Machine.

pick rd 10 now

1997 Hansen "MmmBop"

1996 Alannis Morrisette "Ironic"
Are you going to say you like the MMbop song
Of course I like it. It's a throwback to the Jackson 5. Look, quick explanation: when this draft started I was looking for a theme for my picks, like everyone else. But I was hamstrung with all of my picks post 2000- I don't listen to a lot of new music, so I was forced to choose pop hits on the radio that I really liked but wouldn't have started listening to if not for my kids. After I chose "All About That Bass" and I got ripped for it, I thought to myself, you know what? There's a whole lot of songs all through the years that everybody looks down upon but which I secretly really love- and since many of them are love songs and what I would call "Bubblegum Pop" anyhow, why not make that my theme?

So yeah, these are hits, and yeah some of these are songs the "purists" can't stand. They're songs that a lot of people are ashamed to admit they like. But I'm not ashamed.

10.11 The Flaming Lips - Race For The Prize (1999)
Love this song. This was my favorite album of that year. Some great picks this round.

I saw them at least 4 or 5 times on this tour---some of the best shows I've every attended.
They are playing The Soft Bulletin in its entirety at Red Rocks the end of May but its on a Thursday.
I am thinking of going to the Barenaked Ladies + OMD + Howard Jones in June and the Heart + Joan Jett + Cheap Trick show in August. It is by far my favorite venue in the Denver area (assuming good weather).
Not sure about the rest, but I've always been a BNL fan, and just can't bring myself to watch/enjoy them since Steve Page left. Now Ed Robertson can sing, it's just not the same. :2cents:

Honestly I think anyone that says they love the Jackson 5 hits but claims they can't stand MmmBop is being a little disingenuous. While Hanson isn't close to being as prolific as the Jacksons of course, that's a fun little pop song that could have followed "ABC" on a Jackson 5 record.

I actually did own the CD single to that song, it was a "guilty pleasure" that I made no secret about.
