Did anyone else catch Steven A. Smith's rant about Dallas on Espn (1 Viewer)

I am not a fan of his at all, but man did he hit the nail on the head and pretty much described to a T how I feel about the Cowboys as a loyal fan.

Basically said:

- Romo cares more about being a star and Jessica Simpson then winning football games and he gave personal examples.

- The team has no leadership anywhere.

- Jerry Jones needs to hire a football man and move along.

- TO is a distraction at times but is not THE reason for failure that everyone makes him out to be.

- The team and it's QB have no heart

Steven A. Smith must have mixed up TO and Romo. Naw, he's a racist.Everyone here in Dallas knows that TO is a huge distraction and more want him out of here than want him here. Romo played poorly after his injury, no question. He's not the problem though. He still had chemistry with Witten (aside from his last pass of the season), but TO, Williams and Crayton whined and cried to their WR coach like little babies.Oh, and I'm a Giants fan so no bias to the Cowboys, Romo or TO.

I'm white and he wasn't being a racist. He was being honest. Get rid of TO if you want but this team. THIS team, is not winning a Superbowl with or without him. Not until they play like the care instead of playing the football version of the Yankees. A bunch of over paid no fire in their heart guys, not a team at all.

I am pretty sure that most of those things he said have been said by a lot of football insiders over the past few months, so it is not like he gave us anything new. The Owens thing might be the only thing that was a little different, but Smith has been on his jock for years, so of course he is not going to give him too much blame for anything. The problems Owens has everywhere he goes speak for themselves.

As a Cowboy fan, here is what I see with the Cowboys:

Romo is still learning to play.

Romo is to "Aw Shucks" for my tastes, and needs to care a bit more. Appearing in offseason karaoke videos, beach life, and People magazine is not comforting.

Romo needs to respect the ball, and take care of the ball.

Barber needs to understand his limitations, and run straight ahead, to much bouncing it outside and stepping out of holes and getting outside the TE for "NO GAIN".

Barber leaves a lot of runs on the field. 3.7 ypc with that line is terrible.

T.O. needs to shut up and play.

T.O. needs to leave if he can't do that. This team needs the wake up call he provides, but they need it behind closed doors.

This isn't most places, if we need a player. Our GM will go break the bank and get the player in Dallas, even if he's lazy and has little or no work ethic...Roy Williams.

Offensive Line - Flozell is terrible, and they are all too big to be asked to pass block that much.

Offensive Coordinator needs to establish a sustaining run game, and a play action offense. Romo in the shotgun every play is not fooling anyone.

Defense needs a little more help up the middle at Linebacker. Zach Thomas = done, Bobby Carpenter = sucks, Bradie James = overrated.

Safety play needs some help, but they can be OK in the right scheme. We started to see this when Wade was presumbably calling the D. Darren Sharper would be a nice FS, and move Hamlin to SS.

Offense at times puts the Dallas D in tough spots, but this team needs some more plays out of their D.

Dallas needs to go out and do the following:

Jason Garrett is smart enough to recognize the problems and fix themon offense. Otherwise, ask Romo to do less and run the crap out of the ball.

If Garrett leaves, go get Shanahan...ask Mike Nolan to run that D. Sorry Wade.

Go sign a backup QB: Frerotte, Griese, Volek. I'd prefer someone to push Romo, but someone that can win a game or make a throw would be great too.

Get younger on the O-Line and D-Line through draft and FA.

My Cowboys have some work to do...

I saw Jimmy Johnson comment on the Cowboys quickly. He basically said they were undisplined and cannot win. He basically blamed the coaches.

I agree - this team has taken a few steps backwards since the coaching change but I don't think the talent level of the team has dropped. If anything they have more talent now than they did then. Except for the D. That D stinks. They came on a bit at the end of the season but that just seemed wierd to me and out of place. If they would have been doing that through the season they would still be in it. Romo and Witten can't do everything themselves. That said TO is talking but I don't see him catching the balls or making the plays, especially this last year.

Stinky defenses seldom lead the league in sacks. They had a terrible stretch, particularly when Brad Johnson was leading the offense, but if the offense can put pressure on opposing teams to keep up (and they can) that defense should be very good.Personally I don't see that happening with consistency until they get some serious discipline from the coaching staff and leadership in the locker room. Wade is a good defensive coordinator but he doesn't have the chops to be a head coach.

Yeah, I guess now that I look at the stats they were much better than I thought, but when I watched the games they just looked so bad. (didn't see many games where I live) maybe I just got to see the stinky games, to me it seemed like their generally good play at the end of the season was not normal, but I guess it was more normal than some of those really bad games. I guess I just want to see the D be more consistent. That said, I was wrong saying they stink. They definetly have some good things going on.

Until Jerry Jones hires a competent Gm/coach and lets them make all the personal/coaching decisions the team will go no where. He already drove away Parcells who could have taken this team over the hump if he'd have just stuck to writing checks instead of trying to run the show.

Good posting. There's plenty of talent on this team but there's an absolute vacuum of leadership and it starts with the coaching staff. Nobody appears willing to grab TO when he starts running his mouth and shut him down. Why is it that this guy is always surrounded by people willing to enable him? It's one of the things I've never understood about the guy's career. As much as I hate Ray Lewis I feel like if TO ever played for the Ravens Ray Ray wouldn't tolerate his "me first" BS. The Cowboys certainly have enough talent to win a playoff game but they're so dysfunctional they didn't even make the postseason. How does Dallas NOT fire Wade? Personally, I'm thrilled with the decision. Don't change a thing!

 (Eagles fan here, so of course I despise the Cowboys)But honestly - really good original post here. The Cowboys obviously have a ton of talent, they just seem to need leadership BADLY. Wade is too soft for this, and he should go. TO certainly contributes to the problem, but he's a great player - D needs to decide do they put up with the headache, or do they move on with Roy Williams as their #1? Witten is one of the top TEs in the league, and their RBs are all excellent; Barber to grind, Jones for explosive plays, and Choice looks solid overall. I agree that they need an upgrade (slightly) at OL; they were very good this year IMO, but Flozell... oof.

Defense is pretty solid I feel too. R.Williams is overrated as everyone knows, and an upgrade at safety would certainly help, but I have to say I think the front 8 are pretty darn solid....

I really think if Dallas had some good, solid coaching they would be a force. Luckily for the rest of the NFC East, they don't  that week 17 game was just an absolute disgrace.

 james played esceptionally well last year .

Don't worry, when they start out 2-0 all their problems disappear....
No, they won't disappear just be hidden.SAS is no more an NFL expert than I am, especially on the subject of the Dallas Cowboys. To say Romo has no heart and doesn't care about winning......I would have turned the channel on the guy like I usually do. I agree with him about TO, he's not the reason Dallas loses although if I were the coach, especially the WR coach I would sit that guy down and give him a "man to man" talk and he could do with that information what he pleases, but because he's a great player and makes a lot of money doesn't make him the spokesman for the Dallas Cowboys each week.Jerry Jones messed up on the Roy Williams trade, he must need an NFL guy in there because that was dumb. I would pay that for Calvin.......but for Roy Williams, the 2nd best receiver on an 0-16, man that was dumb.

If we look at things from a glass half full perspective, the Cowboys are almost all set on defense, maybe adding another corner and bench strength at safety.

The problems to me are (a) coaching / organizational leadership (b) offensive playcalling and © quarterback, in that order.

Jones was too impatient with Parcells. It was to some extent Jimmy Johnson all over again.

Garrett leaving Dallas to be a head coach somewhere would be a net positive for Dallas, imo.

Romo is a very likeable guy. If I were a cowboy fan, my concern would be that his tenure at starting QB is going to last far longer than it should...

I dislike SAS as much as the next guy, but he's kind of right about this, Romo is soft, chokes in big games. There is no one in football who comes to play every week , like T.O...I'll give him a lifetime full of passes after watching his SB performance vs. Patriots after sleeping in a hyperbaric chamber for two weeks, to heal his injuries - now THAT'S dedication and determination..

I think the point is, the Media and in particular the Cowboys' fans, broke out the anointing oils too soon with Romo..

he's really not that good..even Parcells has said 'he's good for at least one major screw-up per game.'

SAS is right about JJ meddling in affairs that have nothing to do with him..he should hire a GM and let him take it from there..JJ has George Steinbrenner's disease lately..you know, sign big name free agents, always try to keep your team in the news, but when it comes down to crunch time the team doesn't win the big one...JJ needs to realize he can buy all the players he wants, but he can't buy team chemistry

and why did Dallas bring in Roy Williams if they barely threw to him? that's where T.O.'s frustration stems from..Garrett

has been `figured-out` by opposing teams, as if they were reading the Dallas playbook the last few games of the year..like they knew what play was coming next. a very predictable offense..

Weird.

Parcells didn't shut T.O.'s mouth down. He cut and ran.Jones is the problem. You'll never have anyone shut TO up because their boss, Jerry Jones, won't back their play. I think Jones thinks that coaching is easy, just tell the studs that Jones works so hard to bring in what to do.

Being late to the party has nothing to do with it, he was asked yesterday if T.O.should be released, and he basically said before you even think about that, if you want to fix the Cowboys you need to start at the top, and that means hiring a real GM, a coach who will actually be in charge, and look at Jason Garrett since as a supposed head coach in waiting he sure didn't do too well as O-coordinator. And then figure out why Romo seems to always come up small in big time situations. He wasn't even really defending T.O., just saying that releasing T.O. isn't going to solve the Cowboys problems, but the way some people talk about T.O. you'd think he was the only reason they imploded, which is not true.Stephen A does get on my nerves sometimes but he was damn right IMO

Again, I agree and he's right for the most part. It's just NOT "new" or timely. Oh and why does he have to talk so damn loud. We get it.

did he say "however"?
"HOWEVAH.......THIS IS WHERE I SAY SOMETHING NOT REMOTELY INTELLIGENT....BUT I WILL SAY IT REALLY LOUD WITH..... EXAGERATED.... PAUSES WHICH WILL MAKE IT SEEM BOTH... LEGITIMATE... AND... INTELLIGENT TO THE IDIOTS THAT LISTEN TO ME!"
