Did I win the CC Fraud Lotto? (1 Viewer)

10 days ago I get the dreaded notification text from Chase...

"Chase Fraud: We Declined $2330.35 with card ending 1824 at BESTBUY.COM on 04/22. Was this you? Reply YES or NO. Msg & data rates may apply."

Damnit.

Log in and also find ~$10k in charges to Babcock Furnishings. Call chase, they remove all the charges and overnight a new card. No biggie.

I log on a few days ago And see a big red -$4200 At the top of my app. Huh... It appears the vendor refunded me some of the bogus purchase after Chase had removed it.

I check this morning and it's still there.

How long does something like this stay before they reclaim it? Anyone ever had the "free" cash stick?

When can I safely drop my new riches on hookers and blow?

:mansion:

I'd probably call them up and let them know about it.  I imagine they'd be a lot like Amazon is in these situations, "Hey, thanks for your honesty, go ahead and keep that". :eyeroll:

Yeah, they'll figure it out and ding you. Probably when the business who processed the refund closes their books at the end of the month.

If it's not reversed in days, it will be in about a month when Babcock Furnishings represents Chase's chargeback because they already issued their own credit.

I once ordered a grill from Lowe's. There was all kinds of issues. It was supposed to be here on day X, it didn't come. We called and they said it was an error and will get shipped right away. A few days later, no grill. We call and this time they say the order was for pick-up. It wasn't, we go back and forth. Finally, he concedes it is a delivery order and he will take care of it. Monday, I come home from work to see a big box in my driveway. It is not a grill though- appears to be a generator. I call and once again go back and forth with customer service. Tuesday, I come home from work and the generator is gone. I come home Wednesday and I see a box- the correct box- with my grill. Yay. I build and cook up some burgers that night. Thursday I come home from work and there's another box with another grill in it. I put in my garage. Friday, I come home from work and there's another box with another grill. So now I have 3 identical brand new grills. I ended up selling one to my wife's coworker for 1/2 cost and gave the other to a friend as a wedding gift.

This. Chase gave you a provisional credit, as required, and it will likely get reversed by Chase (before they even do a chargeback to Babcock) because they will see Babcock already made you whole.

If it's anything like any other "credit" it's provisional while they do the research to figure out what happened.  Most companies give the benefit of the doubt while they research.  Once research is done and they have documentation, the address the account in an "official" manner.  You should get a letter stating their findings and the legal action they are taking/took with respect to the charges.

A few years ago, I ordered an Indians-themed Tiffany lamp for my desk in my man cave.  I come home for lunch to find two boxes on my porch.  I take them inside, open the first one and find that one of the panes in the shade is smashed.  I'm upset.  So I open the other box, thinking the lamp is shipped in two separate boxes.  Lo and behold, here's ANOTHER lamp only without the broken shade.

I'm guessing someone at the factory broke one of the panes.  So, rather than have to deal with a return, just went ahead and shipped me a second lamp, figuring I would be happy as a clam and not saying anything.  They were right.

So you're saying you accepted an extra Chief Wahoo...

😎

🙂

without reservations.

Is it really fraud if spent on illegal/black market items off the government radar? I submit, those transactions never technically happened ;)
When they ask for their money back you should just mail them a big bag of gummies.   So we're all square right?

Did you put the Tiffany lamp next to that Leg Lamp that you own?

That Leg lamp was a major award!

Got the letter from Chase

Credit still sitting in the account a bit over 2 weeks later. Assuming it will get caught in the month end audit.

I’d sit tight and hope while playing dumb.

About 10 years ago, I got a certified letter from an insurance carrier stating I was owed almost $5k and if I didn’t contact them to claim it, the money would be sent to NY State Unclaimed Funds Dept. No chance that money was supposed to be for me. I decided my best course of action was to ignore this in the chance it would be audited and hope it finds its way to NY state. I set a reminder in my calendar for 4.5 months later to contact that dept... Money was in there waiting for me, that was def like winning a scratch off jackpot.

Lesson; these lucky things should always be slow played. Drawing attention to these things quickly, will prob have them reversed. If it is ignored, imo it is more likely to be buried and the odds of a mistake again are higher than being called out immediately.

*** Being from an insurance company, who are there solely to #### us, the money felt so good!!
