Dinner Ideas for Dad and Son (1 Viewer)

Funkley

Collar: Up
My youngest son (11) and I have the weekend to ourselves with Wifey and our oldest out of town. Need some dinner ideas from fellow Dad's. Go!

:coffee:

Whereabouts are we talking? Do you have any of those theme restaurants that kids seem to like such as the Rainforest Cafe, I think those still exist.

11 years old...where is the closest Dave and Buster's?

Is there minor or major league Baseball game to take in and have dinner there or on the way?

Pizza Planet

IHOP for breakfast both days.

Pizza for dinner one day, steak or seafood the next day.

Ice cream joint both days.

Why does a dinner suggestion need to come from a fellow Dad?

Is a non-Dad really that ill-equipped to suggest a meal for you and your son?

As others have said, whatever he wants.  What are his favorites?  My 13 year old is easy, we get pizza every weekend but no one ever wants his favorite, Little Cesears.  So when it is just us, I sacrifice and we get Little Cesears (at least its cheap).  Both my boys love steak so if it is a multi day situation, I get a couple of big steaks and grill them up.  Otherwise it is their favorite take out/fast food.  I can't think of anything I would cook for just me and a son other than grilling steaks, burgers or brats.

White Castles....slider competition!
That reminds me of the first time my wife went out of town for an extended time (I think it was 3 or 4 days).  My boys had huge plans for eating all kinds of junk, including both of their first trips to White Castle.  They were both super excited as my wife has nixed White Castle after a bad experience back in college (experience defined for her as having to eat them).  Long story short, we haven't been back, except to get shakes.  They weren't converts.

I say go away from the usual pizza, burgers, etc and try something new with him that will be memorable. Is there some type of cuisine he wants to try but hasn't yet (sushi, hibachi, greek, indian, etc).

Maybe he'll discover something he loves and he'll remember having it for the first time with Dad.

My kids (13, 11, 8) all like them.  Whenever Mom goes out of town, they all know we are getting White Castles for dinner.  My wife hates them (taste, smell, look, etc), so we rarely have them.  The kids know as soon as she drives away, we are in the car to grab a couple of sacks to see who can eat the most - and then who can build the tallest tower with the boxes.   :lmao:

How are his cooking skills? Have him help you make chocolate chip pancakes one morning...

Go to a sushi restaurant

Good stuff......I think I'm saving the grill for tomorrow or Saturday. Maybe both.

Why don't you grill him up an amazing steak with baked potato side.  You guys can sit around and bs and ##### about the women like buddies.

As an aside, my wife and daughter are at the beach for the the week so I'm at home with my 21 year old.  On Monday, we played 18 holes of afternoon golf and hit up a sports bar for a late dinner, a few brews, and some baseball.  Tuesday I worked late so we just chilled and watched the O's game.  Wednesday we, with my FIL (throwing a bone to the wife), went to the O's game (great seats).  Tonight we're seeing Suicide Squad, and Friday we're playing golf again.  We call the week BFW and it's costing me an arm and a leg but hopefully making some lifelong memories.  Or he'll just continue trapping Pokemon's and not give the week another thought.

If the kid likes to eat and thinks mass quantities is a novelty. ..... Fogo De Chao

Had a great meal at Butcher And The Boar when I was there a couple of weeks ago.

All of the local food trucks park in the same downtown area around lunch time. That could work too.

Whatever the kid wants. Make the weekend about him.
This. Others have already mentioned grilling.

But see if there's an activity he wants to do and if there's a wing place or other restaurant nearby that you guys can hit up or get take out from afterwards.

Is he a sports guy? If so, and you have a BWW, there will be lots of olympics on the TVs. The other thing is the HOF on Saturday nite, sit in front of TV and watch your old QB go into the HOF!

If you are competent on the grill, use it as an opportunity to teach him how to do it.

Yes, he is huge into sports and plays sports. Typical kid, sports, video games, etc.

And I was just giving eoMMan ####......James likes sushi and some other unlikely stuff but that's the kind of thing he does with my wife.

Nicely done

Is this where we get to perpetuate the stereotype that a man is unable to provide a regular meal for his children, and is rendered either into a state of panic or instead resorts to take-out?

seriously, I cook or get dinner for my family more than my wife.
I do too.  But, we cook at home mainly because going out to eat every night isn't overly healthy or cost effective.  For a few nights when it is only a couple of people, the cooking effort doesn't get much easier, but the cost goes down significantly.  That's why it makes more sense, or at least for me, becomes the norm.

Is "mom's not cooking dinner" really this significant of an event?
I do the majority of the cooking. Was mostly looking for some cool ideas and witty banter. No reason to take any of this seriously.....door's over there --------->

I am not a dad, so obviously ill equipped to dole out advise for this high level event.  I guess making pizza or burgers or wings or mozzarella sticks or fried pickles at home together would be out of the question.

Thanks for understanding!

Not sure if MPLS has good BBQ, but a man's right of passage needs to include some smoked brisket and pulled pork, with all the sides that go with it.

Coincidentally my wife is out of town this week. I got up early this morning and put an 8lb butt on the BGE. Went on at 5:30, left for work at 8, and my 13 y/o son and his buddy kept an eye on it and adjusted vents as necessary between wiffle ball games to keep the temp around 250. Just took it off, letting it rest for a bit before we pull it apart and dig in. The two boys are pumped, feel like they accomplished something, invited a bunch of other kids over to help them eat it. Not an option unless you have a smoker, but you could go out and buy a cheap Weber kettle.
