not sure if it is a fluke, or reflects on the coaching, but it seems like some of the highly touted prospects emerging from texas have disappointed in recent years... VY, cedric benson, roy williams on offense... derrick johnson and michael huff on defense... johnson has had his moments & isn't a bust, but more was expected... i would call williams a bust at this point... for most of his career he was saddled with a horrific team, so maybe the jury is still out... at least with the offensive players, some of these guys don't have reps for maturity or being workaholics...
michael griffin, TEN FS is the only player off the top of my head that went in 1st round in recent years and looks like he has bonafide star potential, and more importantly, is flashing the same great instincts and talent at the pro level that he did in college...
* in the interest of fairness, perhaps this could be said of USC as well, lately, though perhaps no too the same degree...
it is debateable whether leinart is a bust or just hasn't been given a chance... but palmer & casell have done well...
bush has disappointed for a #2 overall pick & looks like he will never be a feature RB... lendale white began his caeer slowly & has work ethic issues, but he has somewhat acquitted himself this season (among the league leaders in TDs after deangelo)...
WR is more disturbing... steve smith looks like a keeper as a secondary WR... mike williams an unmitigated disater... jarrett hasn't been encouraging... some of this appears to be work ethic related, & in case of latter two, there aren't that many 6'4"-6'5" WRs that are quick & explosive... carroll seems to favor these WR types in recent years (current roster has one or two of these, physical, body types)...
TE dominique byrd was cut by the rams for legal problems...
maybe this is a sign that carroll doesn't emphasize character in some cases?
kenechi udeze was a disappointment (though he missed this year due to leukemeia & says he will be back)... jury still out on lawrence jackson, but he wasn't necessarily graded as a potential star...
a few recently placed DTs, mike patterson in PHI & a 1st or 2nd rounder in DET haven't set the world on fire...
keth rivers looks like he will be a good one assuming he returns to form from knee injury...
trot polamalu is a legit star and one of the top defensive players in the NFL at any position...
these questions could be germane in 2009, as the trojans have a pipeline of future 1st rounders... taylor mays & malauga could go in the top half of the 1st round... i think the LB will be good, not sure about great... i think mays is a can't miss prospect & could be a future pro bowl safety...
