Disney Vacation (4 Viewers)

buying the dining plan is not a good deal.
I've heard this a couple times and honestly have never crunched the numbers. It's more mental for me than anything cause I feel without it, I'm not going to order what I really would want on the menu.

Using our reservation at Chef Mickey's for example, dinner out of pocket will run $200 for the 4 adults and and another $75 for the 3 kids. That's a $275 dinner buffet and we've got something similar planned for 5 nights total. Maybe my maths off as admittedly a newb to the DDP after paying outta pocket our last trip. Roughly $1300 for 5 nights worth of dinner? I think we paid somewhere close to that for our DDP for 7 of us.
Always planned my trips around the goal to get free meal plan. Never really given any thought to paying for it or scheduling a trip at a different time. I would imagine that paying for it is not a great deal (otherwise they wouldn't be offering it).
Yup, this is what we've done too. My kids are 9, 13, 15 and can tear up some food. The meal plan with sit down, quick serve and snack keep them out of our pockets for food because they're always full.

Generally we'll do cereal or whatever for breakfast (we bring it), get the quick serve for lunch and the sit down for dinner. Sometimes, if we have an early dinner reservation, we'll do the quick serve for breakfast and get a soft pretzel or whatever for lunch.

Snack option at Hollywood studios bakery for breakfast= awesome

Usually hit it after getting fast pass for Toy Story. Cant wait to go next time when we have bands. Not sure when that will be though. The Disney cruise took the place of Disney for 2015

My first time this week too. As far as I can tell, they are like a 'hotel room' without daily cleaning service. I think you will get cleaned once during a week, pretty sure it is Day 4. I also think that if you need anything (like new towels) you can call down to the front desk and get new ones. Everything you need supply-wise is there (other than food). Go to the DVC site and look at the description of your room and it will list what is there. When do you head down, Harry?

Correct me if I'm wrong and HTH!
Thanks to you and para for the DVC details. Flying outta Philly next Saturday morning and will be there till Thursday. Really looking forward to it thanks to this thread and finally getting an ADR at O'hana!

At school picking up my daughter right now.... She has no idea we are going to Mickeys Christmas party tonight.

I am NEVER staying at all star music again. More on this later.
Interested to hear why. We were there two years ago and liked it a lot.
Long story short.... No hot water. No parking, they were making people park on the complete other side of the property and hike it about a half mile at 1AM despite having a large chunk of the parking lot roped off for something going on today. No busses. We waited 40 min to get to the MK and 30 min to get back despite being near the front of the line both ways. Multiple busses went by for the rest of the all star properties.

I was miffed....

Yeah, I don't need it down to the penny but ballpark would be appreciated.
How long you staying and how "high class" we talking about. Some of us go on the cheap for a few days off peak ($800), some of us go monorail property for a week with the dining plan during christmass ($6K)

Budgets for Disney are all over the place. Hotel on or off property? If On...what level...value, moderate, delux?

How long? A few days...to whenever. Plan of going to the park the whole time? Hopping?

Car? No?

Where are you coming from? Flights?

And the biggest...what time of year. That plays the biggest swing in $$. ESP when you factor in things like free dining.

Ours is anywhere from 5k to 9k.

We can only go in summer. We are DVC so hotel is not factored in completely. We pay yearly dues so that is favored in. We do a studio at bay lake tower (contemporary) which is equivalent to a luxury resort.

But being DVC we can't get perks like free dining and that is a big part of the cost.

We buy annual passes, and leap frog trips. We will go late in the summer on 1st use, and then early in the summer the next year so we can control that cost.

Airfare from NY to MCO is anywhere from $1200 to 1500 for a family of 4

But I think the biggest expense for us is "experiences". We enjoy a lot of the special amenities and hard ticket events of the resort.

- desert parties

- fireworks cruises

- special tours

- VIP packages (like the frozen summer fun)

- jet skis at bay lake

- cabanas at the pool

We spend 2 weeks there, so we have the time to do those and not need to rush though the parks.

Can't sleep. Too excited. Fly to Orlando in the morning.

Gonna start it off with a few days at Universal, with a side trip to MVMCP on12/9. Then over to WDW for the rest of the trip.

Like last time, I'll probably be sending updates while waiting in lines to pass the time.

Thanks to everyone here. Y'all were a huge help putting this trip together.

Would any of you be so kind as to disclose your budget and what that covered?
We bought season passes for our family of six in May of 2013. Used them 5 times during that one year span. We live in Atlanta so we can drive down in about 7 hours. Here was our breakdown - approximately

Gas - $250-$300 per trip

Lodging - $700-$1000 per trip (off property)

Tickets - $500 per trip

Food - $800-$1200 per trip (for dining and groceries)

So the trip cost was about $2250-$3000 per trip. One of the times we stayed on property because a relative took a bunch of us and paid for us to stay on property. All of the other trips we stay in rental houses just a couple miles from the parks. It's incredibly convenient and save us a ton of money because it's crazy how much lodging is for 6 people. We do several ADRs at the restaurants so probably about 25% of that budget was for groceries and 75% was for dining at Disney. We don't do a lot of extras and we don't buy a lot of souveniers. The one thing I'll point out about my budget above is the ticket cost really comes down if you buy the pass and use it a bunch. If you are just doing a week then for us our cost would go up to 1200-1500 for the trip. For each trip I'm basically saying it's about a week.

Our family per day cost with the season pass

Family per day cost 1 week - $370.69 2 weeks - $185.35 3 weeks - $123.56 4 weeks - $92.67 5 weeks - $74.14

Not hot water? Freakin' weird, did you get an explanation on why that happened? That seems like a thing that should have gotten you a comp dinner, credit to your room or a few free souviners at least.

*ETA* Sometimes the busses are 'luck' of the draw. Downtown Disney and Hollywood studios always seem to be the worst for wait time. Never had a problem at magic kingdom though, that's odd for sure.

That sounds terrible. Write a letter. The problems we experienced at Grand Floridian were nowhere near that bad. I wrote a letter and got $250 in gift cards and an offer code that was amazing, but I think it had a quick expiration iirc. Went back to Disney a month later and had a blast.

No hot water is the worst. My one stay at Hard Rock Hotel in vegas we didnt have hot water the morning we were leaving. 4am shower was brutal.

I've lurked in this thread for a month or two now. Just got back in from 4 days at Disney with a 4yo and a 2 yo...the trip absolutely blew my expectations out of the water. I kind of had in the back of my mind my 4yo wouldn't be able to ride much and would get worn out and my 2 yo wouldn't be able to ride anything and would pretty much be dead weight (for lack a of a better term). I couldn't have been more wrong.

I was blown away at the rides my 4yo liked. You couldn't pull him off splash mt and thunder mt. I finally got the nerve to get him on Space Mt but the line got too long. My 2 yo daughter was big into meeting the characters so when we did have to split up that's what we did.

Drove all day and stayed off site at Downtown Disney then 4 nights at the Contemporary. Spent 2 full days at MK, a half day at Hollywood and a half at AK. On the 2 half days we made it to Epcot and another afternoon at MK.

Trip total....driving, eating relatively cheap with the exception of 2 character meals was $5k-$5500. Our big chunk of that was the room at the Contemporary. It was about $2k. We did it cause we thought the kids would be needing to nap thru out the day, but that was never an issue.

Would definitely go again, but probably stay in a cheaper room.

Probably looking at air fare from Boston, stay off-property, possible car rental, for a one week visit.

I don't normaly go down the complaint road, but I did just take a few minutes and sent something online. I chalk it up to staying at a value resort. If I was staying at the GF Id make a much bigger deal of it.

Leaving for Disney this Sat for a 7 night stay.

Staying at the Ft. Wilderness Cabins.

Total cost per adult is $1800 (sharing a cabin with my mom, 4 year old daughter, sister and nephew).

Cost includes for the five of us: Disney Dining Plan (it's a free week), 5 day park hoppers passes, Memory Maker package and airfare*.

*I used air miles for 5 tickets so the airfare was free.

Would any of you be so kind as to disclose your budget and what that covered?
I had meant to respond to this and, well, I was in Disney, so, you know.... priorities. But now I'm back at work, so, you know.... priorities.

Initially, someone said below that it is all over the map and that is true. We have DVC so the room doesn't cost me any money at all. I pay the annual dues once a year and am good for the year. Also, we have the high end annual passes because we go twice in a calendar year and sometimes 3 times. So I didn't "pay" for tickets to the parks for this trip. However, my passes also cover all the extra stuff that a regular park pass doesn't have like Park Hopper, golf courses, Disney Quest, water parks and all the other extras that you get with our pass.

So taking the room and park tickets out - our room costs me about 500-600 a year. When we go and don't have any points, we either stay at Pop Century to keep costs low and or find a deal at a better resort. You can find Pop room rates anywhere from 85-250 a night depending on the time of year. Park tickets are expensive but they get cheaper the more days you are there. My annual passes cost me just under 2 grand for a family of 4. I think a day pass in EPCOT is like 90 bucks plus you have to pay for parking which is 18. We get free parking. Of course if you bus in there is no parking.

For this trip we had all the above. We budgeted $3,000.00 for all the money we would spend. All of our meals (we pay cash) whatever extras I bought for the kids stuff like that. We also drive so we have to budget for gas and food on the trip down as well as a room to stay if we can't make it all the way down in one shot as it is 18 hours for us. I usually will tack on an extra 500 for that to be safe. So all total for us to drive down there and do our thing is about 3500.

We bought Tables in Wonderland so that added some cost but paid for itself two meals in. I added a place while we were there because, hey, Disney. I also added the Christmas party while we were there because, again, hey, Disney. I bought the kids way more stuff than I usually do because it was just an awesome trip. All told, in looking at the bank account, I am out of pocket close to 4 grand. Without the money for the park tickets and room because, again, they were already paid for. I think I good estimate for us would be about 5000 to 5500 if we had to buy them as well or if you want to take a percentage of their cost and add it to this trip.

Again, though, that is will paying cash for meals. We've done trips where we stayed at Pop for a week and had the free dining and I can almost swear that we kept our budget at 2500 for the week and hit it without problems. You can go frugal (relatively speaking) down there and be ok. Honestly my wife would have a better idea at the exact raw numbers but I bet I'm close. If you ballpark yourself from 2500 to 5500 you are fine.

But making a Disney budget is actually easy. The menus for all the places are online with their costs. So you can literally plan out exactly how much you are going to spend on meals. The room rates are published so you can do the same there. If you are flying or driving you already know how to budget for that. About the only thing you can't budget for are the extras - toys, clothes, souveniers, and stuff like that that you will buy - and if you are like me, eating and drinking around the world you have to factor that in as well and that can get expensive. I would say this - get the menus, get your travel costs and estimate your room and tickets. That will give you your absolute hard cost bottom line. FRom there, depending on your family, add 500-1500 for the extras and you should be fairly close to a reasonable idea of best and worst case scenario for a budget.

Of course, you can just go hog wild down there and drop 10 grand before you realize it if you want to. Professional photo pass shoots, boats, special events, going all out at the restaurants more than normal, eating and drinking everything you find, buying your wife the $3,000 purse and watch set that she wants at MK, and on and on and on. At the end of the day when you sit down and just look at everything you get and experience down there, the cost is very competative with any other week long vacation. Hell, I took the family to Boston for a long weekend and spent over a grand without blinking an eye a few months ago. And Disney has a billion more things to do and see.

Disneyland Friday & Saturday for me, wifey, our 4 year old daughter, and 2 yr old son. Doing Disneyland Friday, and playing Saturday by ear, either doing another day at DLand or California Adventure.

Can't wait.

First time staying in a DVC Villa. Weve got breakfast foods being delivered to our place. Do these units come stocked with plates and silverware or should I pack plastic ones? Same with towels. I know we dont get maid service but does the place come with towels and linens?
yes you get paper plates, paper bowls, plastic silverware, paper towels, dish soap, bath towels, etc.

You dont get a ton of plastic ware though so don't throw them away right away.
Paper and plastic? At Saratoga Springs we get real dishes and silverware. Wine glasses, pots, pans, coffee mugs, knives, etc. There are plenty of towels and extra linens in the room. You can always ask for more.

I guess I should have asked what size room. The studios have what I mentioned. The 1 and 2 bedroom rooms have what you mentioned.

AcerFC: yeah, all good, all fun. I'll still restrict a Universal chat to that thread.

Anyway... Ordering lunch at Be Our Guest was a cluster####, and I'be been cropdusting like a mofo all day, but other than that it's been great. About to meet Anna and Elsa.

If you're at Magic Kingdom today and picked up a foul stench while walking 20-50 feet behind a guy in a Santa suit T-shirt and Santa hat... My bad.

MVMCP about to start. We've got a good spot in line to meet Scrooge McDuck, Donald, and Daisy. Then hopefully over to Minnie in candy cane dress.

So far the star of the show has been Jack Skellington as Sandy Claus. Folks started lining up for him at about 5:00. They brought Sandy out early. It is a cool costume and backdrop - his Xmas tree is sparse and beat to hell just like in Nightmare Before Christmas.

Elsa was elegant and charming - she did a great job. And Anna was a ####### knockout. I got caught gazing at her while she was running shtick. I was wearing at Olaf T-Shirt, and was telling me about Sven eating the carrot of Olaf's nose. I forget the details.

Had a delay for the Winnie the Pooh ride, but we were near the front of line with a place to sit and a cast member kept us entertained with funny stories about rides breaking down around the park - I'll try to retell some of them later. For a Disney diehard like me who didn't have screaming kids in tow, it was worth the wait to hear more about behind-the-scenes stuff.

ETA: yes, I did change shirts to meet Anna and Elsa. It's not that I like ignoring my wife and kid to get warm hugs from hot 20-year-old chicks, but I like to commit to the character.

Your dedication may not be appreciated by the masses, but know that we here in the FFA respect you going above and beyond.

Just booked a last minute DVC split stay for next month. 4 days at Saratoga Springs and then 4 and Boardwalk villas.

Also managed to get a 7:00 pm O'hana table. Can't wait!!

Yea man those girls in the Anna and Elsa outfits are ridiculous.
They were solid. We met them too. Elsa does more for me and the one we had pictures with was nice but the level of the some of the Belle's I've seen.

I was talking to my oldest after we did 1900 Park Fair because he wasn't into the whole step sisters making fun of everyone and asking all the boys to marry them. I told him he needs to respect the girls that do that job because it is really hard to stay in character for as long as they do and do it so perfectly. It really is amazing how good they are at it. When we did pictures with Belle I made a comment to my wife not to step on her dress as we were positioning ourselves and after my wife moved Belle leaned over to me without missing a beat and said, don't worry, Beast steps on it all the time so I'm used to it. Just the way she did it without missing a beat. I give those girls a lot of credit for the job they do.

Looks like a front of colder air is coming through. How's the weather feel down there for those attending this week?
Chilly. Arrived Saturday, and it was cloudy, misty and miserable thru Monday. It has been pants and shirt maybe sweatshirt weather. We have been getting a locker for storage of coats/pants for kids who wore shorts.

Blizzard beach is closed for the next several days due to the cold weather. 'Nuff said.

Pack for layers.

I got cold waiting for the second parade at MVMCP. But I was wearing a long-sleeve jersey under a T-shirt and jeans. No windbreaker or anything like that.

MVMCP was fantastic as always. Since it goes deep into the night and attendance is capped, the staff gets a little loose. The ducks put on a great show for every family, all seven dwarves were in attendance and sold their characters well.

It extended to cast members not in costume. As we pulled back into the station after riding Space Mountain (5-minute wait after the second parade), the cast member decided to mess with the 14ish-year-old in the lead seat. As we came around that last turn, he started giving her a stop sign and yelling "HIT THE BRAKES! BRAKES! BRAKES!" The girl started to panic, unable to find the brake pedal, and we all got a good laugh when the ship pulled into the station and stopped safely thanks to the brakeman running the ride.

We closed the night at Cosmic Ray's Dance Party with Phineas and Ferb. The Bay 2 crew was a little bored and punchy - they stopped serving the menu and were just passing out cookies and cocoa, and the party was lean because most of the little kids were gone. We walked right up to the counter with no wait, and the DJ started playing the intro to "Apache" by the Sugar Hill Gang. The crew said the treats were free, but we had to dance with them. I'm a slave to the rhythm, so when the music hit the beat for the spin, I went for it with them, yelling "TONTO! JUMP ON IT! JUMP ON IT! JUMP ON IT!" while lassoing and spinning. The crew cracked up and have us an extra big stack of cookies.

Phineas and Ferb were great on the dance floor, too. My daughter and I did most of the junk dances with them: fishing rod and reel, lasso, sprinkler, shopping cart, lawn mower... It was a fantastic finish to a great evening. The kid and I used to watch P&F every morning at breakfast. She's outgrown the show, but hasn't outgrown doing stupid dances with her old man.

This has me literally laughing out loud and I cant get that song out of my head.

DHS this afternoon and evening. FP+ used on Frozen Sing Along, Tower Of Terror, and Rock n Roller Coaster.

Wait time for Toy Story Mania is already 80 minutes.

Why did you need to change shirts?

Spent last week (11/29-12/6) there and will never go any other time. With Fast Passes and the low crowds, we waited for 30 minutes three times all week (Test Track, Mine Train and Harry Potter Quiditch thing at Universal) and never spent more than 15 minutes for any other ride, with the large majority being 10 minutes of less. Add in ride swap for all the fast pass rides (so the boys got to ride the good rides twice in a row with the walk through the queue being longer than the wait time), the kids were whining when they saw 15-minute wait times posted. Spoiled brats have no idea what it's like to wait in a 90 minute line!

Was able to do both Universal parks, including all the Harry Potter attractions in one day. Legoland, if there hadn't have been two schools there on a field trip, would have been a complete ghost town.

We rented a house with 5 beds/bath, private pool, etc. for 4 families and it was great. 5 minutes from the parks and 1/3 of the cost of a moderate resort.

The only bad part of the trip was the Mickey Xmas party. I don't know if they oversold tickets or didn't do a good job kicking people out, but all the tips I read saying the park is almost empty and it's the best way to see the parade without a huge crowd were not true. Ride times were higher (30-45 instead of 15-30) for a few big rides, the Anna and Elsa meet and greet never dipped below 90 minutes and it was elbow to elbow along the entire 8pm parade route, with limited places to stand. We kept getting told we couldn't stand where we were and directed to places where there was no room to stand, or you had to stand behind crowds two people deep. Not worth the extra $60-70ish extra dollars, per person, that we spent.

Weather was also perfect. A downpour for about 45 minutes one day while at Animal Kingdom, but otherwise mid-70's and clear.

So we bought passes for the Christmas party next Friday. Saw today it's sold out. Do they really cap it or did I just pay extra money to walk around with a 100,000 #######s?

Going to the MVMCP tomorrow nite. Been able to ride on most everything at MK except Splash Mountain (too cold!) but the kids love space mountain, so a couple more easy rides with no line will be great.

10 and 12 y.o. Boys wimped out of Tower of Terror, but 7 y.o. Girl did it and loved it. Will hold that against them forever!
