Disney Vacation (4 Viewers)

boring piece of trivia about space mountain... my best-friend up the street's step-dad designed the computer or something that ran space mountain. got rich. collected lotuses (cars) in semi-retirement. built a kick-### house.

funny that only now, while typing that out, am I questioning the veracity vs local myth of this. from the look of him, could very well have been slinging the yayo too.
Yayo is a helluva drug.

Possible renovation on the horizon for Tony's town Square at MK. Right now, you can book up though mid-April but then nothing is available until mid July.

Lets hope its the menu thats getting an overhaul and not the decor.

Here are the places that were available for us on MK day

Tonys, Liberty Tavern, Diamond Horseshoe, One spot in Crystal Palace for 3:40 (too early) and The Jungle Cruise place

We looked at the menu for all and decided to skip them all. Didnt appeal to us and while we like Italian, you know full well what we have here in NY vs leaving NY and eating Italian.

We will try to walk into Be Our Guest which we know will prob not happen or we will be fine with some QS meal. The Plaza Restaurant was appealing but no ADR available the entire day

Same here....ate there once and the chicken farm seemed like a McDonald's chicken patty with some Ragu jarred sauce over it. If you live in NY, you know good Italian food, there is really no reason to experiment anywhere else.

That said, the location is awesome and if you get lucky and snag a porch table during a parade its great.

We are thinking about taking another trip to Disney (went about 3 years ago) in the fall.  Has anyone stayed at the Polynesian since the Reno?  Last time we stayed at the beach resort which was a bit disappointing (other than the pool and the walk to Epcot) as the hotel was a bit worn down and we saw the wrong kind of mouse when we were there.

Other option would be to stay off site at the Ritz or Four Seasons which is really not to much more than staying at the top level resorts in Disney.

I have not stayed at the polly, but other then the major overhaul to the lobby area, the guest rooms didn't change too much, just updated. I have not heard anything bad about them. The major change was the super expensive DVC bungalows added to the beach which some claim detracts from the vibe a bit.

I'm pretty sure they have recently updated the Beach club, so I'm sure the mice can't afford it anymore...lol

But there are lots of other good options. The contemporary/Bay Lake Tower offer similar walking access to the Magic Kingdom (thats why we always stay there) or you could try the Boardwalk across the way from beach club, the walk is basically the same to Epcot. The BW is one of my favorite hotels for overall ambiance and things to do after hours.

If you are considering an "off site" option, look into the Swan and Dolphin. Even though they are in that Epcot/Studios area by the beach club and have a similar easy walk to those parks, they are officially off-site holes and not owned by Disney. However, the big plus is that you get the benefit of the Disney transportation system there as well.

@glvsav37 @Bruce Dickinson

And anyone else

Ever done the Tianna Ice Cream on the riverboat thing. Says you get a great view of the parade. Wife and I are discussing but you have to pay now so we want to know what the experience is like from people who have gone. Before google, figured I would ask here

I really enjoyed the meal I got at Liberty Tavern 2 years ago.  The rest I'm indifferent on.

@AcerFC I've never been, and I've read a little bit about it, and from what I hear, its not all that great (sorry).

Here is a pretty unbiased review of it with pictures...esp of the parade viewing which as i hear is the downside even though they are selling that part high.

Overall, I love the idea. I think the riverboat is really underused overall. But this is a really long chunk of time taken out of your day and for what you get vs cost, I'm not sure its perfect yet.

I did read one review where the guy really didn't feel he got enough for his money, so on the way out he loaded his backpack with Mickey ice cream bars—I mean stuffed it full—and then proceeded to just hand them out to random people in Liberty Square as he left. lol.

Thx. Exactly what I wanted. Was a big draw for seeing parade without 8 million others. Sounds like it falls short. At least it did 2 months ago

Stayed at the Poly at the end of last Summer. We loved it. Great location and views of the MK. Obviously on the monorail, you can walk to the Ticket & Transportation Center, the Lava Pool is great (my kids were on the slide about 600 times), good food (Ohana, Kona Cafe breakfast, Tambu lounge and Trader Sams for drinks), and Dole Whips of course. The rooms aren't amazing or anything but they are nice enough. We stayed in the Samoa longhouse. This site has everything you could ever want to know about the resort.

and unless they cut the trees down in those 2 months, I doubt it got any better.

I'm a big fan of dessert parties, but this one does not compute in my book. Viewing issues aside, its a (cue Gilligan Island music) 3 hour tour on a boat that you can walk on normally any time and (unless you are a HUUUGE fan) Tianna isn't normally a big, hard to see character.

If you want a sneaky spot to watch that parade from, here is my secret spot.  do you know where the Barber Shop is on Main St? Is just to the right of the big doors the parade exits Man St from, across the side street from the Fire house. Go there. Nobody realizes there is any space around the corner from the Emporium and you can get a belly-to-the-rope spot. Plus you get then benefit of seeing them come straight at you (the Dragon is specifically awesome from this angle), and being it is just before the performers go off stage, you get a higher chance of some extra attention b/c they are basically done with their dancing routines.

Heading to a water conference in a couple of weeks at Universal (Orlando). Taking a boat tour of Reedy Creek Water district (mostly Bay Lake).  Looking forward to it.

Not sure if we got lucky, or its normally empty, but when we went over Christmas we walked out of the Town Square Theater after meeting tinker belle and just stayed on the porch to watch the parade.  Had a nice elevated view from their porch.  Few people were sitting in the chairs behind us.

At first I thought we would have been run off, thinking it was some special reserved viewing area.  No one ever said a word to us, basically had the porch to ourselves.

[lots of good info snipped]
Awesome, thanks Bruce.  we are going to be there first full week in April, probably hit Universal on a weekday.  Sounds like we probably don't need that express pass but can decide when we are there.  Just wander around, soak it in (especially Harry Potter), buy an overpriced wand, hit the tamer rides, high 5 some character's, grab some dinner, and taxi it back to the Boardwalk.

the New Planet Hollywood Observatory at Disney Springs opened briefly today as a surprise preview. Got a chance to watch a live stream of it and while i'm not really  PH fan, it is pretty cool looking inside, with big (really big) TVs, movie memorabilia—when you 1st enter there is a real Chewbacca costume (I assume it was used in one of the movies), and a Christopher Reeves Superman costume. The menu was designed by Guy Fieri (which may or may not be a plus).

all well and good, but then just caught line up of deserts on Twitter....WTF??

http://imgur.com/a/nrqMG

thats at least a month worth of sweets for me.

looked far along when we were there the other weekend. from the outside, reminded me of something you'd see in that game Myst... which makes perfect sense for disney springs. they had a side-wheel riverboat kind of restaurant place pretty far along too- should be a nice spot, whatever the food is (if it's food).

Its now Paddlefish...was Fultons Crab house and the Empress Lilly before that (I had my 1st character meal there as a kid way back when). Should open shortly, they just started teasing the menu.

I got banned from Disney Village back in the day for ignoring the buoys and cruising a little speed boat all around that thing.  Good times.

Oh yeah, Looks like I'm headed to a work convention May 21-25 in Orlando.  Its at the Orlando World Center, don't know a thing about it.

Kids last day of school is May 22...Might have to sneak them out early and make it a family trip.  I'm thinking 3 days at the Convention and 3 days at Disney?

I  know its Disney thread, but can most of Universal be tackled in one day?  With a 4 and 6 yo, I doubt we'll be riding the big coasters.

Thinking in the 6 days, we'll hit up all the Disney Parks (4), Universal (1) and then a pool day.

Is Elana incorporated much yet?  Taking 4 year old for her 2nd trip (went 2 yrs ago) and she wants to know if Elana "lives there now too".

Originally said I don't think so, but that post above made me think I can say yes. I just can't be wrong lol

She's tag-teamed with Cinderella. So lines tend to be a bit long for her.

Don't know the scene at WDW, but Elana recently started doing meet-and-greets at DCA.  Most of the princess stuff is at Disneyland (except for Ariel's Grotto dining at DCA), so Elana was drawing pretty big crowds.  There seemed to be as much interest in her as there was in Doc McStuffins.

The world center is a really nice hotel that is just outside the Disney footprint. Its the tall momma you see when coming in via magical Express, just before the road signs turn 'Disneyfied' (if you are looking for that). I can't say much about the hotel as a whole b/c I only stayed there 1 night, during my college program b/c our formal night was there.  What I can say is that I had a great view of the area while 'ehm having relations on our 20'something floor balcony. lol

Tough call on universal for that age. The kicker with Uni is that you'll need a multi-day ticket to do both (from what I remember). i'm not an expert, but from what I understand, one of the main attractions, the Hogwarts Train, goes back and forth between the 2 parks, so you can't ride it w/o a hopper. And if you are not riding the roller coasters, i'm not sure there is much left. You should really check out the park map and to an audit of what is there and the height restrictions for each.

Another option would be LegoLand. Its a bit further away, but that is a prime age for there.

DisneyQuest officially closing in July to make room for the NBA experience

This was supposed to happen a year or so ago, but it got put on hold. Many people thought the NBA pulled out or they were going to renovate DQ....I guess neither happened and it was just a delay.

What's your take on why DQ closed?  Would figure not enough business of course ...but why?  Video games just not that popular these days?  Maybe the $50 or so for "all day" just not enough dough?  Why not just raise the amount and see what happens?

I didnt even know DQ was still around.

My wife and I first went in 2002 together. Memorial Day weekend. We got tickets for the parks and for Downtown Disney. At the time, there were two parts. A kid part and an adult only area. We went to the House of Blues for dinner and then we hit up this awesome comedy club where they did the make up your own lines comedy thing (like Wayne Brady- cant remember the name of the show)

Everything was included in the price of the ticket. I wonder why that model didnt work for them. We went twice and it was packed with people both times we went.

Never been there but have walked by it 100 times.  It's the dead part of Disney Springs IMO

IMO, disney quest suffered from a bunch of fails.

1. When do you do it? If you are a typical 5-7 day visitor, every other year, are you taking at least a 1/2 day out of your schedule to play video games (as cool as some were)? It really only got super busy when it rained and the parks were a wash out for some

2. Location: Even if you have a Disney Springs day planned, (as someone said) the location is tough, it's not on the touristy side of DS where all the Disney-centric shopping is. It was down near Cirqe and that was more of a nighttime,"I've already got plans" side

3. Cost: from what i remember everyone had to pay admission, wether you were playing or not. And while I would pop on something here and there, my wife would not get the value out of it. They were better going to a pay card type deal like a Dave & Busters.

4. Tech: while some things were very cool, the tech was often hard to maintain and keep operational. I'm sure Disney Interactive supplied some of the games there and and they got shut down a year or so ago.

5 Repeatablity: the locals are not going there time and time again. Not without some more attractive admission options for repeat guests.

Just my $0.02.

We go there late night.  I love it.

My wife recently got a Disney cookbook. It had the ohana shrimp recipe in it. We've made them 18 or 19 times since. So good.

Dinner Reservations have been down for 7/31 all day.  Online, app, calling in. <_<

Sucks when someone gets up at 5 AM and can't get the reservation the crew of 8 wants for breakfast at Epcot. :kicksrock:
