I have a planning doc i was working up for you. you still thinking contemporary?
We let the kids decide and I think we're going port orleans (I'm open to either riverside or French quarter so please let me know your thoughts).

Almost certain( haven't booked- ran outta time last night) it'll be Nov 11-17 or 18th.

Hit me with your best shot.

About to pull the trigger on an early October trip so we can hit the Halloween Party and food and wine. When we went in December we stayed at Riverside and really loved it. Would it be stupid to stay at the same hotel again? Feel like I'm missing out by not going elsewhere but I'm not sure I want to splurge on a deluxe resort and Riverside seems like by far the best option amongst the moderates
Riverside is by far my favorite Moderate.  Stayed at Riverside and Caribbean Beach, walked the grounds and eaten at French Quarter because of the proximity to Riverside (and because beignets are delicious), Coronado strikes me as more of a convention-hosting facility than a vacation resort.

If you want to try something different, I'd either wait until you are comfortable splurging for a Deluxe, or look into a possible deal to be had with DVC points a member won't be using,

couple of things:

Tomorrow on GMA, they are promoting a big Star Wars announcement. I assume it has something to do with the new movie, but we will see.

Lots of chatter about the Tron coaster from Shanghai coming to Tomorrowland in both WDW and DL. Signs point to it taking the place of the speedways being those are a large piece of property that is always debated as being actually Tomorrowland or not.  Discuss...

Mission Space is scheduled for a refurb closing on June 5th, but the August 5th reopening date is still 'yet to be determined'....could something be up with this less then popular attraction?

Another refurb is Tough To Be A Bug scheduled for April 23 through 29th. Its a short one, so i assume mostly cleaning and such, but hopefully they will finally be going HD on the movie?

The 50th anniversary of Magic Kingdom is October 1, 2021, so any big additions they want to make to be ready for the 50th would need to start soon.

At DLR, there's two good spots for Tron.  One is in Tomorrowland where the old Carousel Of Progress used to be, then the Innoventions building, currently the Star Wars Launch Bay.  They could queue the ride and do the indoor part there, then run it outside over Tomorrowland - there's no People Mover, so there's plenty of room up at that level.  Could even have it buzz the Monorail, which has a stop inside Tomorrowland at DL.

The other is over the stage buildings at DCA.  They would probably have to close Mike and Sulley to do it, but that's not a popular ride.  We know Imagineers  have hung Test balloons and other riggings above that space to explore adding a coaster over there, but the better brand fit over there would be a Marvel overlay, especially with the GOTG repurposing of Tower Of Terror down the hall.

Our trip is coming up and we are starting to think about things that we need to pack. We've got a extra batter pack for phones, ordered some ponchos, will have sunscreen, hats, and sunglasses. We also plan to do a Amazon Pantry thing to the resort for snacks and such.

What other types of things should we be looking at packing?

Remind us the ages of the people in your group.

The Ultimate WDW Packing List, courtesy of Shannon Albert, the mastermind behind WDW Prep School.  Shannon's advice on using the list:

"Hate that nagging feeling that you're forgetting something on your trips? I do too. That's why I put together this huge Disney World packing list to help you remember lots of items that you might otherwise forget.

THIS LIST IS NOT INTENDED TO IMPLY YOU SHOULD BRING EVERYTHING ON IT.

You shouldn't (though one reader's mother did that once!). This is just an all-inclusive list to help jog your memory."

Wow - that's a challenging group to navigate around - good luck!

You asked about packing so here's my thoughts:

You want to make sure they are comfortable while there - Disney is a lot of walking for anybody but especially for older and younger folks.  Comfortable shoes, sock and shoe inserts.  Stuff to help with blisters/hot spots.

Keep the sun off of them - hats, sunblock and maybe lightweight long sleeve shirt/jacket.

One thing you may want to consider - a stroller.  I know it may sound crazy for those ages but they are great to have to haul stuff around and if the kids want to sit (and you are willing to push) it can help.  You can bring some snacks and drinks and store them - you may find you don't need it and you may not even own one any more - consider renting for the week from like Orlando Stroller.

There is a Star Wars convention in Orlando this weekend. Today is the panel for the new movie, "The Last Jedi" at 11am est.

you can watch it online at StarWars.com

FFA Disney Friends...I need a favor.

IDK if you know the podcast WDW Radio w/ Lou Mongello, but it is very popular Disney podcast. Its his 10th anniversary and he is running a 10th anniversary logo contest. I have one of the finalists, so i'm asking you to check out his page and vote for mine.

Its logo #4

I appreciate the help!

some more interesting rumors floating around

1. They are apparently creating a version of the famous, exclusive "Club 33" at the WDW parks. Apparently each park will have their own club and while no detail have officially been announced, its expected that you join 1 of the clubs but can't use the others. Over in DL, membership starts at $50k (I believe) and then $15k a year in dues. There are already Club 33's in the other European and asian parks.

2. A hiring call went out for more transportation drivers and it seems that WDW will be offering their own Uber type transportation option.  No real details on when it will start or what they will be driving, but with so much invested in the MDE app as well as the rise in taxi and uber use around property, it appears WDW is looking to steal back some of that $$ being spent on property thats not going into their piggy bank.

1. :lmao:  no ####ing way

2. I would pay a few bucks to take an uber to the car instead of dealing with the monorail late at night.

thx. Much appreciated ...I win the love and admiration of the the whole WDW Radio nerd community.

actually, he's sending off a mystery box of WDW swag. I didn't really do it for the swag, just to be part of it. I didn't realize he was going to do a poll vote but whatever.

I was hoping you would get close enough access to ask if the host uses his real name, or if it's a pseudonym riff on "lemon jello".

Another vote for #4. Consider it a very small thank you for all of the helpful info you provide in this thread.

Been to WDW like 20 times and briefly got stuck on a ride for the first time today. Carousel of Progress, of all things. Apparently someone tried to get up and exit while during the rotation between scenes.

Anyone experience the Aulani yet?  We (me, wife and DD11, DS8 and DD5) will be there in early Aug, and then on to Maui.  I've read plenty of info on the disboards, but I'd like some input/info from FBGs.  TIA
Bob - did you ever give your review of Aulani?

For anyone waiting on Free Dining, I have a pretty solid source who is saying it is will be opening April 24th

Min 4 nights, max of 14 with park hopper or park hopper plus tickets

Check-in dates: Aug 13-Sept 30, Nov 14-20, Nov 25-27th, Dec 3-23rd. (Free dining is for length of stay, you just need to check in inside one of those windows)

Value and Moderates will have free quick service and Deluxe Resorts will have the full service dining plan.

Again, this is not confirmed, but this is from a pretty reliable source.

some interesting Star Wars land talk here from the theme park panel at this past weekend's Star Wars fan convention in Orlando.

If you have the time, I urge you to watch the video. The main team responsible for the land is being interviewed. It is a collection of Disney Imagineers and Lukasfilm people who helped create the initial film universe.

as expected, not a whole lot of detail spilled, just a calculated amount to keep us interested. Lots of great concept artwork and talk of the overall exprience.

The setting is supposed to be an old star port. It was once very popular but has fallen off the main trade routes for a few years. Because of it, it has attracted the typical Star Wars collection of smugglers, outlaws and other outcasts from both sides. The location is not being revealed yet, but as they claim, it is a place that is not new, it has been around for thousands of years, and while off the beaten path, it does fit into the Star Wars galaxy (they joke about the SW cartographers pouring over all the locations so that had to make it right).

They are saying there will be a lot of characters invested in the land including droids, and from some of the workshop footage they showed, i expect spontaneous fights and what not breaking out in the middle of the land—similar to how Studios has street performers pop up on sunset blvd and run through an act.

They did show a cool video of the progress in DL and its looking great. In there were 2 circular pits, and w/o speculating, I'm thinking that it may be the base of the Millennium Falcon ride, however concerned that the ride system might be very similar to Mission Space—which i'm not a fan of but mainly b/c of the very tight ride vehicles. I don't do well with claustrophobia inducing things, but if you are going to be actually driving the MF (as they claim) the cockpit is much bigger. Loving the AT-AT integration inside these buildings.

What was really interesting was what they claimed in the video about truly living in the environment and your actions may have consequences.  They are not saying much, but if my hunch is correct, they may be doing something where your magic band technology will be used to identify you to costumed CMs and how they interact with you. MBs and your identity are already being used in a small capacity on certain rides like Small World and Everest where they are identifying your name. There could be a major expansion on this for SW land and beyond.

Its interesting b/c of what has been leaked so far of Pandora, they are (without saying as much) considering the actual land as an "attraction" And while Disney has always been masterful at making the environments seamless, up until now, they have just been really well done envelopes for all the physical attractions/rides contained in them.  With Pandora and on to SW land, I'm hearing more and more about the land and less and less about the levels of rides and while I love the immersive worlds (its what sets Disney apart from a Six Flags), I wonder if Disney is slowly shifting away from the physical "wait in line and ride a ride" entertainment to more if a "we've placed in in this world...now live it" entertainment. From a business perspective I get it—less money spend on building, technology updating, what if it flops, etc. But I wonder how the guest section will be? I guess we will find out when Pandora's 2 actual attractions open and gauge what their appeal is vs being just in the footprint of them.

D23 will be in July and that is the next big Disney convention, so I would expect another big update (on SW and the parks in general) then.

Sorry but it says I need a FB account and I don't have one.  Nice logo though

Dates are consistent with recent history.  I'd trust it well enough to plan with those in mind - unlikely the final dates are more than 1-2 days off.

Apologies in advanced for bringing up Universal, but I didn't see that it had a dedicated thread.

Going to be in Orlando for work in May and we'll have about 3 free days.  We figure that's not enough for a Disney trip.   from what I can tell, you can do most, if not all, of Universal in 2 days.  The new waterpark doesn't interest us yet.  Kids are still 6 and 4, waterparks are pretty much nightmares with kids that young.  The kids aren't skiddish with rides so if they're tall enough, they're down for it.

Tips for Universal?  I can't decide if their website really sucks, or if Disney's is super user friendly, but tis hard to figure everything out.  Overwhelming for a first timer i guess.

Is there some sort of fast pass system at Universal?  Do you have to say onsite - we won't be onsite.

So if you check in before one of those ranges but overlap a period (we're thinking Nov 11-18) am I eligible? Wasn;t sure if it's true check in on day one or anytime overlapping. Sorry I'm sure the answer is somewhere in these 270 pages.

Most wouldn't agree with me here, but I think so.

From what I know, no you are not eligible. You have to check in (first day) during one of those periods.

Free dining is a real finicky beeotch. Now you can monkey around and check in your 1st day, then schedule a check out on a day inside the FD window, but then you'll have to move all your stuff, be homeless for a few hours and the like.

IMO FD is a nice bonus but too many people make it their do-or-die vacation decision. Often times they run a room discount in parallel to the FD offer that when you do the math often works out better then the dining. But too many people get caught up in the free food. This is the 1st time I've heard them dividing up the offer between Value/mod and Deluxe resorts, IMO, if you only getting free Quick serve then they can keep it. The future doctor tor bill for replacing your liver will outweigh the value in eating only that crap food for a week.

I can do all 4 parks in 2 hours lol

@jb1020 I have not been to Univ in years bur mostly b/c my kids were too young IMO and they are a shade older then yours. I think the biggest ting you need to consider is their heights and their tolerance for thrill rides. B/c unit is mostly thrill, they often come with more height restrictions.

I love universal as an adult, but i'm not sure if the kids will get as much out of it. however, on our next rip (kids will be 12 and 8) I think we will hit it.

I didn't realize their site sucked as bad as you say. Maybe check out the Touring Plans Universal site. TP is money with WDW stuff and its usually plainly laid out content.

Need to check in within the free dining window to get the free dining for the whole trip.  If you have something booked that overlaps, you might be able to call in to a cast member who will split up your booking into two separate reservations and get free dining for the overlapping part, but free dining is such a popular promotion you might not be able to pull that off.
