Disney Vacation (3 Viewers)

Booked I guess what you would call a last minute long weekend in November with my wife and daughter.   Nothing available at any of the DVC resorts for any of the days we will be there (Nov 3-7).  Even the main resorts are extremely busy -- ended up wait listing at Saratoga for 1 BR & 2 BR villas and booked at All-Star just in case it doesn't go through.  Then I began the process of booking dining reservations - holy crap are they packed!

I remember when early November was a time where the parks were virtually empty and many of the attractions were walk-on.  It looks like everyone and their mother is going for either the last week of EPCOT W&F festival and/or the Disney Half-Marathon.

@Tiger Fan and @Capella

are you guys talking about the new theater on main st?

I heard a pretty credible source say it might be replacing Tony's Town Sq and where you meet talking Mickey. Obv he would be relocated.  But if you look at the facade of the drawing, the structure looks pretty similar to the architecture over by those 2 buildings.

Nothing set in stone yet, but I'm leaning this way.
Jim Hill said it's going behind Main Street, where the overflow walkway is. Basically there is a parking lot there now with that park to park drop off that they had been selling.

Just a PSA for you guys...Had a few Sunday afternoon beers then the kids decided they wanted to watch Inside Out.  Not a good combo.

That was an underrated movie in my opinion.  Looking forward to the ride they do at Epcot.  That could be a really cool addition to that park.

Parent of an only child about Riley's age.  I never had a chance against that movie.  One of my favorite Pixars.

Welcome the emotions having a role in the Parks.

A general question about So Cal I can probably get an answer to here.

I have to fly to San Diego for work and from there I'm taking the family to DL on a Wednesday.   Other than the parks, we plan on taking 1 day off and seeing some sights, probably the Santa Monica Pier and Beach.  Am I better off just renting a car for to get to LA from SD?  Then I'll have my own ride to see some sights and get back to the Airport.

same...daughter the same age (have a younger son too) but get all the feels. Have not made it through a whole sitting of that one.

Looks like were booking a week

Sat Nov 18

Sat Nov 25

Well spend thanksgiving there and kids will only miss 3 school days.

Wife already swapped from smaller room at boardwalk to a bigger and $500 cheaper room at art of animation.

She'll keep looking to see if something better or more attractive comes up in meantime.

Waiting to decide on meal plan, any advice on that?

I'll catch up on this thread for more info.

ETA

She changed her mind before making the switch...staying at the boardwalk......for now

It's really tough to get around California without a car (exception: within the San Francisco city limits).  I'd rent one.

If you're a Costco member... Costco Travel will get you discounts with Alamo, Avis/Budget, and Enterprise without having to put anything down upfront and able to cancel up until the day before the rental.

Thanks for the input.  I think we're going to just wing it..maybe.  Amtrak from San Diego to Anaheim was only like $84 for the whole family and a 2 hour ride.  The Disney offers a shuttle to LAX for $50.

Might do something fun and rent a jeep or something for our one off day from DL.

leave today, finally. Longest stretch we have gone without disney since we started taking my son. 7 month old daughter in tow should make this interesting. Got a one bedroom villa at AKL. Looking forward to a more relaxing trip. My son and I are going to see the brewers play tampa this weekend. Get to see the worst ranked stadium in all of baseball!

how old are your kids? The biggest issue I have with the meal plan is that the kids cut off age is 10. I have an 11 year old that really isn't eating enough to justify the adult price. And they get you b/c everyone in your room needs to have the same plan, or no plan.

-------------

Edit to add....on the flip side, with quick service, kids can order from the adult meals for the same credit. Even though you are paying for a kid or adult meal plan, there is no distinction on QS credits...a meal is a meal. Adult meals will have a bigger portion and usually a better dessert.

Also, with the meal plan you get a refill mug. If you are eating a QS meal at the resort, you get a bottled drink with it. Use the mug for that meal and pocket the drink for later in the day.

end edit ----------------

We are fairly good eaters, but only need the regular dining plan and still usually have credits left over. IMO, If you of the deluxe, you'll be in resturants more then you'll need to be.

I do like it if nothing for the convenience and not worrying about meal prices. I break about even, prob lost $150 once, but i liked not giving a F.

this is a col site that lets you play around with where you want to eat and see the cost of the DDP vs paying out of pocket.

Staying at the BW is not a bad play b/c it is close to both Epcot and Studios which means 2 less buses you need to take.  That time of year can be crowded and transportation is always time suck. Being close to a park/parks is a big key to saving time and hassle.

if thats the case, you could do the dining plan and when you order, you're older one would just take the kids meal and your younger one can take the adult one. still a stretch though.

We were able to get my daughter in as a kid last trip, but that aint happening on the next one. So we are still unsure what to to ourselves.

I've always liked Star Wars...I guess I need to learn to LOVE it?
I'm with you. We are good > solid star wars fans. I had the toys growing up, my kid has them now. Saw the movies when they came out. Really dig the whole franchise. That said, Disney needs to be very careful with the amount they let SW universe invade the Disney universe IMO. There is still a large population that does not like SW and may start getting turned off from the parks as a whole.

It looks ike this is more of a pop up technology showcase for now....building off the d23 buzz. but its going to be interesting to see how far the SW shadow extends into the property as a whole.

Tried to follow this thread but I failed to keep up - alas we're hitting magic kingdom tomorrow.

Fast pass line up my wife's Disney freak friend helped with for kids 5 girl and 7 boy so these 3 are scripted :

peter pan flight

7 dwarves train

enchanted tales with belle

we have more 3 fast passes to use and then can reuse the first 3.

What else should a bunch of noobs target?

thanks Disney braintrust!

edit - we have a plan in some app called wdw lines apparently.

9 fast passes per person? This new?

cool!! enjoy

the FPs you have are good ones. The toss up is Tales with Belle. that line is usually a 20 min wait mid day, so if you keep an eye on the My Disney Experience app,  you might be able to trade it for a better one. It's not bad to have, but of your three, it's the one with the shortest wait generally. In its place, I would look for a Jungle Cruise, Buzz space Ranger spin, Splash mtn or Pirates. I assume your kids at that age are either too small or too young to ride the bigger rides like Haunted Mansion, Big Thunder or Space Mtn. If so, then those are good FP options as well.

I know you have additional FPs you can use, but if it were me, I'd save at least one of those for something you may want to re-ride.

Dont FP Philharmagic (its a big theater, so lots of capacity), Monsters Inc Laugh floor (same reason) or Little Mermaid (that ride is the suck, just keep an eye for a short wait time).
Small world can usually be had in less then 20 min wait.

Talking Mickey on Main St is fun, but wait until the line is about 15-20 mins. Usually happens mid day and late at night.

If you are going to watch the mid day parade, it starts in Frontierland, and I suggest looking for a spot somewhere between there (from Pecos Bills) and Liberty Square. Stay away from Main St b/c that where most people go to watch it and being it ends there, it takes longest to get there. THe locations I mentioned have lots of wide areas to sit so you are not all jammed up.

Eat at off times if you can.

The earlier you get to the park, the more stuff you can hit. Are you staying on property or driving? If you are driving, it takes a good 45 mins - 1 hour to actually get into the park from the car. You park in the lot then have to go through security, then take a ferry or monorail to the park gates. If the park opens at 9, don't expect to show up at 9 and walk in. If youare staying on property, then the bus will drop you off right up front and you eliminate all that extra hassle.

The Lines/Touring plans app and site are really good. I subscribe and use them often. I find their app a little more accurate on wait times than the Disney one, but you'll need the Disney one to book or modify FastPasses.

Juice up the phones. Bring a spare battery. If you don't have one, I suggest buying a "Fuel Rod " They are rechargeable battery sticks that are $30 each that you get at kiosks in the park. The cool thing is that once you deplete that charger, you simply go to the kiosk and return it for a fresh, fully charged one for free, All day long. And you keep it so you can use it on another trip.

MOST IMPORTANT TIP!!!!! go at your kid's pace. Relax, enjoy and everyone have fun. Don't beat the piss out of the kids b/c at the end of the night, those little sweat monsters will be like 100lb sandbags you gotta carry out of the park. Then everyone is tired and cranky and its no fun. Don't try and kill the park—you will lose. Even with your extra FP's you prob will not see everything.

We were granted 3 more due to some ticketing/booking friction.

And we have the original 3 that I guess are reusable.

So it's 6 not 9 I think.
the original 3 are not 'reusable.' However after you have used all 3, you can book a 4th. Once the 4th is used you can book a 5th. etc. By then the inventory is usually pretty slim, but F it, grab them where you can at that point. It beats standing in line.

Those rides I said Don't FP for above, those are the ones that are most likely available for your "after 3"... pick the best attraction that fits your time and touring preference.

California Grill Saturday night and then :bye:  to Disney for quite a while until after the kiddo comes. She wants a first Christmas ornament from the park so we are going to have to make a rare summertime exception and head into the park during the summer. In and out and I'm still dreading it. Might be 1000 degrees in there.

Thanks for the awesome knowledge bomb - much appreciated!

They need to fix the self scanner things when you are driving your own vehicle. It is pretty much impossible to get your wrist at the correct angle with a magic band. I have had to remove it each time and place it flush against. They are set up for key cards. They need to point down. Then you can stick your arm straight out.

That custom ornament guy from that day we were both live-blogging from Epcot back for more?

I fell in love with train travel during my recent trip to England, so I'm all for Amtrak-ing it.  The blogger who runs Disneyland Daily lives in Oceanside (beach town between San Diego and LA) and takes the commuter train to Anaheim when she does solo park visits.

The Amtrak station in Anaheim is by the Angels ballpark and Ducks arena.  On foot it's three miles to the park entrance plaza.  Should be super easy to get a cab/Uber from the train station.  There's a guest dropoff/pickup lot on Harbor that's a short walk to security and park entrances.

Haha oh yea he'll be back in November. He was also there in April this year -- says he actually makes the trip 3 times a year which I found odd. There was nobody at his booth in April for the same items that will have a long line 7 months later.

But this time we are just going to the Christmas shop for an ornament the old ladies can write on.

Had a great time.  Thanks to all the tips in this thread.  Really enjoyed Ohana (twice) and Be Our Guest.  Sci Fi Dinner was good and T-rex café was cool.  Didn't end up at La Ceiller like I wanted or Schula's.  I'm glad I had a fast pass to Avatar.  That ride was easily my favorite.  The Aerosmith ride was also awesome.  Only rained about an hour a day. 94 degrees consistent. The Poly was great. Room had a great view of Magic Kingdom and the fireworks.

Just a PSA for you guys...Had a few Sunday afternoon beers then the kids decided they wanted to watch Inside Out.  Not a good combo.

That was an underrated movie in my opinion.  Looking forward to the ride they do at Epcot.  That could be a really cool addition to that park.
Thought it was only me.... glad to see I'm not the only wuss.  Proud of my Daughter as she insisted on being Sadness for Halloween that year after seeing the movie.

Greatings from London.  Tomorrow AM we jump on the Chunnel and are headed to EuroDisney.  I'll try and give a review when I get back.

Agreed. Those are good places to eat. Never been to La Ceiller  :kicksrock:  and my Ohana experiences have all been breakfast (and I hear the dinner is fantastic).

Avatar and Aerosmith are also my favorites. We rode Avatar twice last month and had fast passes both times. Good thing because the lines were massive. My next tier of rides after those would be Expedition Everest and ToT.

Just got back home last night after doing 8 days of Disney in 9 days. :D   Amended the previous schedule of 7 in 9 and added another day with just my girlfriend that we went to Magic Kingdom.  Really glad we did.  It had been raining quite a bit the 3 previous days we had gone and the added day was full of sunshine!  I (mistakenly) decided to add the extra day at Guest Services the night before at Epcot right at park close.  Lady didn't know what she was doing and charged me $31/person for the extra day instead of the should be $10.  Thankfully, the ticket office at the TTC corrected the mistake the next morning and gave me a gift card for the difference as well as a paper FP to anything we wanted (beside Avatar Flight of Passage or AK night show) that we used on Seven Dwarves Mine Train.  Some thoughts on the new stuff...

Avatar Flight of Passage is now my new favorite Disney ride.  It's AWESOME.  We went at rope drop the lone day we went to Animal Kingdom, stood in the mass of humanity to get into Pandora and then made our way onto the ride by 9:20 or so.  Totally worth it.  We even snagged FPs for it two more times that day.  Just gotta be persistent and keep switching the times.

I enjoyed the updated Soarin'.  Didn't make it there last year, so this was my first time seeing it.

Really enjoyed the Pixar Live! show at Hollywood Studios.  Recommend it if you get the chance to watch it.  Definitely gets you in the feels with parts on Toy Story and Up!

Had great luck going to Frontierland first at Magic Kingdom.  Was able to ride Thunder Mountain 3 times and Splash once two different days before 9:30 all in stand by lines.  Almost don't want to make this info public so the crowds don't start going there.

The Happily Ever After show at Magic Kingdom is very well done.  I recommend the Tomorrowland Terrace Dessert show to watch it.  I thought it was worth it to have a great seat for the show and some top notch dessert to end the day.  We did this the last night we were at the park and it was a wonderful way to end the trip.

My parents each had an annual pass since they were down there 3 weeks this time and are going back next March.  It was great having the Photo Pass for everyone to enjoy.  The cool thing is that everyone in the party can scan their ticket/magic band for the photo as long as the accounts are all linked.  Only the Annual Pass holders can view the un-watermarked photos, but it was handy that anyone could scan in once they were taken.

Highly recommend ordering your food ahead of time via mobile ordering for any of the quick service places in the app or for Be Our Guest online.  Saved us a lot of time in lines and the pick-up process for the quick service places was seemless and easy.  They have a dedicated line for mobile orders and you just show the app/give your name for the order.

We never stood in a stand by line more than 30 min for any of the rides at any of the parks.  Just made great use of the FP system and got to everything.  The rain complicated this a bit the first few days.  Especially at Epcot with Test Track (although it was down on the second day we went there with no rain clouds anywhere   ), but Disney was on top of things sending us emails about the ride being down and alerting us that our FP was good at other locations.

All in all, another outstanding Disney trip with my family.  Especially great since it was the first time I went with my girlfriend.

One thing I didn't like was the vertical distortion you get on Soarin' now for things like the Taj Mahal, Eiffel Tower and Castle when you set on the sides.  That was weird.

Non park news: Disney to pull all of its streaming content from Netflix and create their own streaming network.

####ty, but it makes sense. Disney is a broadcasting and entertainment company fist, resorts second and a theme parks somewhere around #5-8. With them owning the hemorrhaging ESPN they need to drive the alt-cable content delivery rather then just ride along in someone else's speedway car.
Not sure how much sense it makes.  I would think they could make more in charging Netflix a fee rather than selling the product themselves.  Feels like all these streaming options are going to cannibalize one another and end up not making anyone money.  I mean, who wants to pay for 20 different streaming services?

IDK...but IMO, there will come a point where the collection of a la cart streaming services will be cheaper or equal to your cable package and will cater better to your needs. The age old question is "why am I paying for 15 Spanish language channels?" just b/c its part of your package.

But more to your question, Disney is media company—Disney channel, ESPN, ABC, etc. They make media, not piggy back it. I think they got in with Netflix to learn the space and I can see them eventually taking netflex over one day.

Who knows, but it will have a built in audience and if they hold their catalog hostage, then they will get subscribers.

Honestly, the one thing keeping me form entertaining the cord cutting revolution is no real availability of live sports. With ESPN in the Disney network it could change that scenario—too bad I dont follow any of the ESPN sports.

Ribeye at the California Grille was honestly one of the best steaks I've ever had.

Wife had the $79 lobster which was good, but 25 bucks overpriced.

WOW, lobster is something I never buy out at a restaurant.  So easy to do at home and fairly inexpensive compared to the markup you get at a restaurant.

side note, the water smells terrible.  I'm assuming it's all the sulfur content. I've never noticed it before but the showers at the hotel and brushing my teeth felt strange.

all Florida water is whats called "Hard" Yes, it is a really odd feeling if you are not use to it. It never seems to dry off of you. I remember when we lived in FL, we had to have a special softener installed to condition the water closer to what we were use to coming from NY.

alos, if you look, you'll often see 'rust' stains around outdoor showers and such

weird. Wife and I actually remarked on this trip how much better the water was than in the past at the hotel. We were actually filling our camelbaks with it by the end of the trip right out of the kitchen sink. We stayed at Animal kingdom.

Booked FPs yesterday for our october trip.

First time we have been with the FP+ stuff...so that was new for me.

Got mostly what we wanted and tried to keep the times and places in a way that would flow.

question for those who have rode Avatar Flight of Passage...says its a 3D thrill ride.  Is it fast motion and such comparable to Star Tours?  Easier like Soarin type thing but in 3d???

I ask because the last 2 times I rode star tours I ended up with a motion sickness like feeling.  I think those fast paced 3D simulations mess with my head (though, I think both were at times I needed another sinus surgery and having just had that in Spring...maybe Id handle it better).  I won't be doing Star Tours again...but plan on trying out Flight of Passage now that we have FP for it.

Doesn't jerk you around like Star Tours does.  Soarin' on steroids.  If it's the 3D drops from Star Tours that messed with you, Avatar will mess with you.  If it's the jerking you around that did it, shouldn't be a problem.  My GF had motion sickness issues after Soarin' the first time.  She took some dramamine afterward and then before Avatar and was fine.

Soarin has never bothered me...just Star Tours for some reason. Ill probably have something with me to take after if I need it.

Definitely looking forward to it.

Daughter is disappointed that it looks like Splash Mountain will be closed while we are there.  Her favorite.
