Disney Vacation (4 Viewers)

this guy has had some good periscopes from the Contemporary though out the storm and today.

I said it before, the Contemporary would be my pick to ride out a hurricane. Mainly b/c its huge and there is one central lobby. So at least you could leave your room and walk around. Anyone staying at a resort with outer facing doors, exterior buildings or ones without a central lobby get screwed bc you are really confined to your room. Plus all the main stuff is actually on the 4th floor of the Contemporary, so god forbid water got into the resort, you'd still be safe in all of the main areas.

My second choice would prob be Animal Kingdom Lodge Jambo b/c their main lobby is elevated by 1 floor, there is a huge window to watch the storm from and the resort itself is sooo big and the hallways are filled with art and African artifacts that you could spend hours just walking around and looking at those.

The expected northwest track of Irma occurred much later than expected and brought the eye straight through central Florida including a direct hit on Disney World by the eastern half of the eye wall. Reports from around Orange County (the county that Disney World is in) are that damage from Irma exceeds that of Hurricane Charley, which caused widespread devastation. We live north of Disney World and received the same part of the storm shortly after it moved through Disney. We can tell you the wind and rain was unlike anything we’ve ever seen. There were dozens of tornado warnings with some confirmed tornados moving through the area.

We had the opportunity this morning to speak with Lee Cockerell, former Executive Vice President of Disney World and resident of Central Florida. According to Mr. Cockerell, there are no reports out of Disney World of any significant damage. This isn’t a surprise, according to Cockerell. “We are very well prepared for these types of events. We run drills several times a year so everyone knows exactly what to do.”

The preparation for a hurricane begins in May when grounds crews focus on removing any branches or other items that could cause damage during a hurricane. Prior to storm arrival cast members know exactly what needs to be tied down or brought inside. The real magic happens during and right after the hurricane passes.

During a hurricane such as Irma, approximately 5,000 cast members will stay on property. In addition to hotel staff, cast members on stand by for clean-up spend the night in the parks. Cots are set up in the Magic Kingdom tunnels and other buildings around property, and board games and the like are on hand while cast members wait for the storm to pass. As soon as is safe, those cast members descend upon the parks to clean up and get set for the reopening the following day. If we haven’t said it recently, THANK YOU amazing cast members. Your commitment to excellence is inspiring and we love you.

Disney World was hit by the worst part of the storm and received over 9 inches of rainfall. Amazingly, Disney World never lost power. This is largely because all power lines on property are below ground and Disney World generates roughly 30% of their own power. While not yet official, folks we spoke to early this morning said there is no reason to believe Disney World won’t be back to normal operations Tuesday, September 12.

There are many reports out of Disney World that the resorts were a great place to be for the duration of the storm. Restaurants were open and most if not all services were available. For example, Boma at Animal Kingdom lodge was open and serving guests at a reduced rate of $20 per person. Disney World is very well prepared to host guests during a hurricane and the Disney Resort became the world’s most awesome shelter for many Florida residents fleeing mandatory evacuation zones. Mr. Cockerell commented, “The building requirements for us were so strict, there probably isn’t a safer place to be during a hurricane than Disney World.”

Just wrapped up a successful day 1 here at Disneyland.  It was more or less a half day.  Took the train up from San Diego this morning and checked in paradise pier around lunch and made it to DL about 1.

So far, I like the Max pass.  For being at the park 6-7 hours we were able to secure 6 FP's.  they were all for the major attractions too.  At WDW I don't think we've ever had any real success after having our 3 FP's.

Really had a good time and felt like we did most of the park.  Only thing we didn't do was pirates.  Space and Haunted mansion are down until Saturday so we'll be back.

We have a full day at DCA tomorrow, looking forward to that.  Definitely doing max pass again.

Only complaints...and it doesn't really bother me but the max pass includes photo pass, but I only saw one or two photographers out today.  Maybe we just weren't paying good enough attention.  Those guys are around ever corner at WDW.  The other "complaint" is the walk from paradise pier.  Looking on the map, we're basically in the park, at least right across the street.  But to get in the park you have to walk out of the back of the hotel then a couple of blocks then thru all of downtown Disney.  I bet my room is 150 yards away from the Mickey fun wheel, but if I wanted to go to it I bet it's a mile walk. Just caught me off guard.

Chill mode now, just ordered Thai food to the room and it should be here in time for World of Color, which we have a great view of.

apparently Irma hit fort Wilderness campground pretty hard. Its still closed and expected to open next week

Disney has announced that its Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground will reopen next week.

Various fake news web sites have been posting that the resort is permanently closed.

The resort closed last Saturday due to Hurricane Irma, and suffered considerable damage to the landscape along with uprooted trees.

Guests with existing reservations are being relocated to other accommodations within Walt Disney World Resort hotels.

Along with the continued closure of the resort, both Hoop-de-Doo Musical Revue and Mickey’s Backyard BBQ will be unavailable.

When we stayed at paradise pier we were allowed to enter DCA from the Grand Californian. Can you no longer do that.

You can no longer do that.  To use the GCH entrance to DCA you have to show a GCH room key.  This policy changed when they moved a big security gate from the east end of Downtown Disney (right by the part entrance plaza) to the west end (by the Disneyland Hotel and movie theater).

Got to Caribbean Beach this afternoon- went for a run, hit the pool and then had an incredible meal at Captains Grille - Prime Rib, wife got the braised short ribs.  I'm about to vomit I'm so full.

I really dont want to know how many gators are in there. The fact that the parents wernt there when the guard had him leaves me shuked

I think the dad was the one in THe Michigan shirt.  He was just on the wrong side of the pool. Idk.  Kid prob had some issues but that doesn't make it right...or any less entertaining from here.

I need good notes from F&W GB....3.5 more weeks!!!
Thoughts on Universal Studios for boys at 6 and 4? Debating a 3 night trip in the Spring and maybe letting the youngest go back to Hollywood now old enough to do Jedi training. Need to check heights to see if worth it or wait another year.

Day 1 ramblings from Hollywood Studios while I wait in Star Tours line:

- Toy Story Mania is a great ride - love the queue and the overall concept.  Seemed to move better than usual today and had available FP at 2:00pm for 6:00pm

- Meet and greet with Chewbacca and Kylo Ren was great - my FIL used The Force on him as we were leaving :lmao: :lmao:

- Dining options just suck here - hate that they closed Starring Rolls.  Had Sci-Fi Dine-In for lunch - it's solid but pales to other TS dining.  FIL loved the drive-in concept but the cars are so damn small he was uncomfortable- he's a tall guy (6'3") - we shared meals here to save on Table Service credits - highly recommend that strategy if you have light eaters - 3 of my 4 kids are "adults" now but not big eaters

- trading 1 QS meal for 3 snack credits is a decent deal, especially when I do it at F&W later this week :excited:

- this place is basically Star Wars land already - I'd say 20% of the people I saw today had Star Wars gear on - it's cool because I love SW but it makes me a little sad because the park isn't what it once was

- sat through Indy for the last time ever - I looked at my phone 50% of the time - can't say I'll miss it

- FIL said he's here to ride everything - I warn him about RnR but he's determined - we get done and he's sick - had to go buy him Dramamine

- it's almost impossible to make this an all-day park unless you ride stuff multiple times

- Path of the Jedi - new 12 minute film - I was ready to be underwhelmed but it was pretty damn good - it's basically just the 7 movies spliced together but it was well done and I was pumped watching it

- plan to watch the Star Wars Galatic Spectacular tonight - have high hopes for it - they seem to intentionally put it immediately after Fantasmic gets out so there's virtually no way to do both and will help drive traffic to the park - I'm already lamenting having to come back for Fantasmic later in the week

Ok - the Star Wars Galatic Spectacular is ####### AWESOME.  Totally badass if you are a Star Wars fan.  I had no idea it was going to be that great.  I was mesmerized.  I may be overstating it but I think it may be my favorite thing in any of the parks now.  We were supposed to go watch Fantasmic later in the week and I already told my wife I'm going to go watch this again instead.

Was that the fireworks light show at the end of the night. Yea that was amazing. I had tears coming down my eyes.

Agree completely.  Awesome show.

Yeah, I hate to say it but that's the first thing to pop in my mind as well.

I'm never good at writing reviews, but man we had a blast at DL and DCA this weekend.  I had done my best to temper expectations because no one I had ever talked too said they liked the Cali version as much as the Orlando one.  It was a small sample size though.

Wednesday was basically a half day at DL.  I think we did everything with the exception of small world and peter pan and pirates.  I think I'm disgruntled at PP for some reason.  The wait time at WDW is ridiculous so I've just pretty much banished it in my mind for some reason.  I really enjoyed the overall feel of the park.  The weather in Sept in Anaheim is better than its ever been in Orlando.  I loved the fact that most of the line queues we're outdoors until right at the end.  Hopping on rides like Pooh while outside was just cool for us.   The overall feel of the park felt really cool.   I don't know if it was because it felt like I was stepping back in time or what.  I think it was because I had only seen it on TV...who knows, but I loved it.

Thursday we went to DCA.  We kind of screwed this up and almost bailed at the last minute.  We were staying 4 nights and only going to the park 3 days.  We had originally planned Wed, Thurs and Sat, but a few days out we realized DCA was closing at 5pm for a cast member party.  My wife and I have different ideas of being at the park at rope drop...park opened at 9.  In her mind...we need to be leaving the hotel by 9!  In mine...if we're not there by 8:30 were late.  Turns out there was a magic hour that morning that we both missed out on.  By the time we walked in all the major rides were over an hour.  Guardians was 90 minutes all day.  This was the one day we felt the Max Pass wasn't worth it, but I think it had to do with the park closing early.  We snagged a FP for Guardians at like 11:30, then got another one for Cars at around 3:30.  So for $40 we only got 2 FP's.  The photos still make it worth it though.  We didn't get to do Soarin this day.  Turns out half the theater is down for refurb so the lines were always 80+ mins.

Guardians is probably the coolest ride we've ever been on.  It puts the Tower of terror to shame, IMO. You sit down and take off instantly.  Its not 2 minutes of old twilight zone stuff.  I'm not positive, but feel pretty certian that on GoG you're gaining up and down in the elevator twice as much at ToT.   Radiator Springs was test track with a theme....but I give Cars the Nod over TT just because it immersive.  Cars land was great too.  It gives me super high hopes for Toy Story land.

Friday was a beach day.  Holy #### yalls ocean is cold!  I braved it...glad I did.  I got used to it quicker than I thought.  The kids and I rented body boards (we call them boogies boards in MS).  The waves at Huntington Beach were like nothing I'd ever been on.  I might have had more fun at the beach that day than any Disney day.

Saturday we hit up both parks in a 14 hour marathon and crushed the Max Pass.  This was the day Space Mt and Haunted Mansion were to open with their Halloween overlays.  Though i believe they opened up early and we're operating Friday.   We got a pass for Space but went straight to the Haunted Mansion...thats a must if you're a Jack Skelington fan.  That was incredible what they did to the place.  The Space Mt Ghost galaxy was a bit disappointing.  The ride was still good, but the theme was just off.  I don't think it had anything to do with Disney.  Seemed forced.

Went back to DCA that afternoon.  We were able to get Passes for Cars, GoG and Soarin.  I think we were able to do everything at DCA that day.

Another thing I noticed that I ended up loving...the rides there don't dump you out in a gift shop!  Thats fantastic for a guy with a 7 and 5 yo.  We would definitely go back.

Yep - still can't get over how good it was.  Me and my FIL were both  :headbang:  - just so cool for an adult of my age (43) who grew up loving Star Wars.

I had my 6 yo daughter on shoulders so I didn't have any hands free to wipe away the tears. Luckily it was dark.

my nerd parts started to tingle during the AT-At scene when they had the 3 of them shown across the whole building, bright blue background and laser beams shooting out over the crowd.

on a related note: Jedi Academy at the Studios just got retooled a little and now you fight either Vader or Kylo Ren (as opposed to the 7th sister chick). Storyline also changed slightly from what I understand. Have not seen it fully yet.

Aww man. My son got gypped. He had to fight a female Inquisitor. He wanted to fight Kylo or Vader.

yea, I think thats why they did it...i get they were trying to inject a female villain in there but kids want to fight the main bad ###...not some girl wanna be.

Knowing the general WDW guest public, I would assume they got a fair amount of guests demanding refunds and free swag b/c lil' johnny's vacation was ruined b/c he wasn't in the Vader group.

@jb1020 Thank you so much for your detailed DLR review.  Glad you had a good time.

Of the six Disney Parks in the USA, DCA is my favorite.  I do miss all the great food options at Epcot World Showcase and the WDW Resorts, but now that the kid has outgrown (for now) character dining, we make a different brand of fun with corn dogs and Dole Whips.

I'm sure I'll be back in Orlando after Toy Story Land and Star Wars Land open at DHS, but for now I dig DLR.

I can see that. I was ok with it but I definitely can see today's parents #####ing about it.

Been talking about stuff like this offline recently after going to a couple of U2 concerts where they played a 30-year-old album from start to finish, performing versions faithful to the originals, and other attendees and I have shared what an emotional experience it was seeing a "soundtrack of my life" album performed like that.

The first movie I remember seeing in a movie theater is Star Wars: A New Hope.  It played at the one-screen movie theater in town, and my parents took me because it was the movie showing in town that weekend and they felt like going to a movie.  What luck.

I fell in love with Star Wars instantly.  I was Luke Skywalker for Halloween that year, and my much-taller friend down the street was Darth Vader.  And my fandom never stopped.  Star Wars is as woven into my life as any musician, athlete, or artist.  I can't play a game of UNO without seeing the Red-5 card and immediately think of Luke going in on an attack run during the Death Star battle.

So yeah, when I eventually see that fireworks/light show I'm sure I'll be wondering who was chopping onions nearby or accusing someone of throwing cat hair around.  Any bull#### excuse to avoid admitting seeing a cool Star Wars show at a theme park made me tear up.

How do you do everything at Disney except Pirates?  That's the best ride by far!!

You haven't lived until you've gotten hammered at DCA, then go right to Pirates for some drunken singalong.

Yeah, we discussed pro's and cons the whole way home, here areour thoughts....

DL > MK, yeah the castle at DL wasn't much.  In fact, it was smaller than I thought.  Overall I thought the parks were very similar.  It seemed a little more compact.  7D ride at MK and the Indiana Jones at DL are a wash to me.  These 2 parks are pretty similar, I guess it's basically a toss up for us.  Anaheim weather puts it over the top for us

Epcot stands alone, but we're not foodies.  We like the drinks and strolling thru the countries, but Epcot isn't great for us with the exception of Soarin.  I like Mission Space, but can live without it most days.

AK-we love it.  Probably our favorite park these days.

DCA>HS, at least as it is today.  The themes of DCA were great....cars land, the boardwalk/pier and the statepark area by the grizzly ride and Soarin.  We felt like we were in different lands while in those spots.  Plus DCA has the best of what we like about Epcot, test track (Cars) and Soarin.  We had a few beers and churros at Flo's while some car pulled up and stared a dance party for the kids while we were there...just a great experience.

5 years from now when Epcot has the Guardians Coaster and the Ratatouille Ride I'm sure things will change.  And the next 2 years when star wars ad Toy story are up and going HS will probably take over as our favorite parks.

I guess the overall advantage we enjoyed was not dealing with transportation at all.  Never once did we have to get on a bus or a monorail.   Granted, the walk from the hotel was further than we thought, it wasn't bad.  To me it was much better than dealing with the WDW transportation system.  Not that its bad at WDW, it just turns into a grind after a day or two.

Not doing pirates was a regret, but there were so many Disney things we had never experienced we put it way down on the list....Mr. Toad, Snow White, Indiana Jones, Finding Nemo (which my wife had a mini panic attack on), Rodger Rabbit, Matterhorn...

That's too bad.  Pirates at DL is way better than at MK.  And during fireworks/Fantasmic, it's basically walk on.  No line.

nice write up @jb1020   glad you had a blast GB.

put me in the camp that likes DLR better than WDW  for all the reasons you listed—nostalgia, the weather, some great old rides and their different ones (Indy, Cars, etc.), everything is so close. Unfortunately, because of location and logistics, I have not been there in years.

But head to head as whole vacation, it's tough to beat the sheer size and variety of WDW.

7D ride at MK and the Indiana Jones at DL are a wash to me.
hmmmm.....I'm gonna fight you on this one. Indy IMO is one of the best rides there, from an excitement, themeing, and overall attraction layout. It blows its kid sister—AK's Dinosaur—out of the water.

I gotta find a way of getting there to see the JS Haunted Mansion....it sounds awesome. Glad you got a chance to experience it.

I highly recommend Disneyland in October.  There's several overlays you don't get in Orlando: the Nightmare Before Christmas Haunted Mansion, Ghost Galaxy Space Mountain (according to a cast member who seemed confident, the trains run faster for Ghost Galaxy than regular Space Mountain), characters in Halloween costumes, the new Cars Land overlay with the Cars in costume (yes, Mater is dressed up as a vampire), and in general the parks aren't as crowded as summer or Christmas.

Day 2 ramblings:

- 'Ohana character breakfast - solid food but they stopped serving bacon!!?!? Wtf?  They replaced it with a tasty ham so not a big deal for me but Mama AAA was ready to go postal on one of the servers.  Always enjoy the Mickey waffles

- Went to Typhoon Lagoon after breakfast to let the in-laws relax a little.  Wave pool is my favorite - I could spend hours just riding the waves and checking out chicks

- New ride their Miss Adventures Falls - family raft ride that was really fun - better than the other family ride there

- everybody was ready to leave around 3:30 so I "suggested" we go get a shower and hit Food and Wine - snagged some FP for the kids and half of us went - as you may recall we managed to get Free Dining and with their being 8 of us we have 128 snack credits for the week -  :excited:   But wait, it gets better /BillyMays - staying at Carribean Beach during the refurbishment we get a $75 per night refund per room - I'm sitting on $1,200 in Disney gift cards.   :excited:   :excited:   So, I tell my FIL - anything $5+ we hit with a snack credit and everything else we use the gift card

- And it begins - we manage to hit about 25% of the booths - Active Eats, Earth Eats, Coastal Eats, Farm Fresh, Almond Orchard, New Zealand, Patagonia, Australia, Hawaii, Greece.  I'll do a longer write-up later but one booth jumps out for me among this list - Coastal Eats.  We got one of everything - Crab cake, shrimp scampi dip and scallops - used a QSE credit to pay for the 3 - about $20 so good value - SO GREAT - we could have just eaten there and gotten full.

- MK today and Le Cellier for dinner tonight

My wife read about all the Christmas parties and stuff today. Almost cried. :lmao:  We'll have a 5-week old by then and there is almost no chance I would take him there then. She is BUMMED.

I prefer Indy over 7D...7D is just too fast of a ride fun but not worth the wait to me.  I guess I meant that those were 2 "anchor" type attractions that was unique to each park.  Though getting on Indy I had flashbacks from the Dino ride and got a little nervous.

My daughter did have a little freak out on Indy.  She's terrified of snakes.  She was on the side of the big cobra...She cried at the mention of even watching Indy when we got home.

Yes @glvsav37 a guy like you that appreciates all the little details needs to get on the Haunted Mansion there during Halloween.

I had a small chuckle when we walked into the Hyperion Theater to catch the Frozen play.

"Why does it have to be snakes?!"

I agree..I really like 7D, but its waaaay too short vs the wait/hype.

I really would love to to see Indy at WDW but I get the separate coasts thing. Its funny (and you sorta mentioned it earlier) to see those WDW/DL crossover rides—just in different setting and minor differences. And then the others that have the same set up with completely different themes—TT/Cars, Indy/Dino

I hope you dropped a little Dad knowledge on your family..."you know, the Hyperion theater is named after...." lol

Day 3 Ramblings:

- MK day - we always use Touring Plans when planning our trips and this time was no different.  Our strategy is pretty common - make use of EMH when possible.  Today was a new one for me as we picked MK which had the new Special Event in the morning and the Halloween party tonight.  Park was rated a "2" and then downgraded to a "1" on TPs.  Worked out great - I think we waited 15 min or less on everything we rode

- Gaston's cinnamon rolls are a great breakfast if you don't mind sweets that early - coffee and a cinnamon roll the size of your head - can't beat that

- Back to crowd size - always irritating when the low crowd bites you in the ###.  Space Mtn was running at 25% capacity any other time and we are waking right on.  I counted 5 or 6 CMs working the entire ride entry (FP plus line/seatbelt check) - still only 15 min wait but come on

- I'm in sugar coma right now - I #### you not, I've had more sugar this trip (in 4 days) than the rest of the year combined - Otis weight loss thread better clear room for my weight gain when I get back.  We watched the parade and then I told the kids we could get dessert on the way out - half a Pineapple Dole Whips Float and half an Ice Cream cookie sandwich and AAA is in heaven

- planning on some pre-Dinner cocktails at F&W and then Le Cellier for dinner tonight - I'm going to crush some poutine and then I'm going to go eat some Canadian french fries.

- I've got to get a Moosehead Lager tonight

- I may have overplayed my hand - I'm too full from MK for any F&W tonight unless I want to either ruin Le Cellier (not happening) or make myself miserable (possibly happening)

- The reason I'm so full isn't the two desserts (I probably had like 1/3 the ice cream sandwich so that's basically like having none) - no, I'm full from the FOOT LONG chili cheese dog from Casey's - HOLY MOTHER OF GOD - this foot long would make Wet Dream blush - http://imgur.com/EMZG39m

- last note - to the MILF who shoved her ### in my face for 15 minutes during the parade > hi
